Generally connecting mathematics with
arts, such as visual arts, performing arts,
literature, and film, has been considered
as a helpful strategy for instructing
mathematics for several reasons.
● Mathematics and art are two very
different ways of thinking,
respectively logic and creativity. The
two greatest revolutions in the
history of art were made by artists
who conceptualized new geometries.
Both arts and mathematics can be
said to be used by humans to
express physical and metaphysical
reality.
● These tools' exercises will give
students some hands-on tasks
where they will, for instance, draw
and make origami or solve Sudoku
puzzles.
Maths in VISUAL ARTS
Maths in LITERATURE
● The tools about literature
focus on the content of the
plots. Some books are
structured according to math
concepts such as Mark
Haddon's "The Curious Incident
of the Dog in the Night-Time".
The famous "Alice's
Adventures in Wonderland" by
Lewis Carroll also refers to
mathematics through
nonsensical characters and
situations.
Maths in FILM
● Movies can have some
mathematical aspects
in their production
phase but what we
focused on were the
movies or TV shows
that talked explicitly
about mathematics.
Maths in FILM
● A great deal of math goes into the work of the
cinematographer and their cameramen. Much of
this work has to do with the video camera itself,
which requires the use of math to choose the
appropriate aperture speeds, the location of
focal points, and to decide on the best camera
angles for a given shot.
Maths in PERFORMING ARTS
● The theatre tools are
based on some plays
presenting math
concepts in their
plots such as “The
Man Who Counted”,
by Malba Tahan or
‘The lesson’ by
Eugene Ionesco.
