The Children’s Hospital
School
Achieve our aims by…
• Providing personalised, challenging and enjoyable learning
opportunities
• Making learning an integral part of the the child’s stay in hospital
• Fostering the values of friendship and determination
• Supporting, nurturing and valuing families
• Preparing and empowering pupils for the future
• Being innovative
Continuity
 Understand of individual starting points
 Involve child, parent, carers, school, LA, Health in agreeing
education plans
 Enable child, wherever possible, to return to school with
academic gains
 Realistic challenge & guidance for academic achievement whilst
in hospital
 Support for transition back to home schools/LAs
 Educational advice for families
 Families want us to communicate with clinical teams
 Easy & clear admission –know we exist!
School Ready ??
There's regular debate about what "school ready" actually
means….
 have strong social skills
 can cope emotionally with being separated from their
parents
 are relatively independent in their own personal care
 have a curiosity about the world and a desire to learn.
Don’t Worry !!
 Your child does not need to be able to read or write or do
sums before they start school. Children start school with a
wide range of abilities and their teacher will be skilled at
helping children progress at their own level.
 What’s most important is that you and your child have fun
together in those preschool months and years – sharing
stories, singing songs, playing games and talking about
anything and everything.
 Your influence matters…
 quality and consistency in all early years settings
 a secure foundation for all children for good progress
through school and life
 partnerships between different practitioners
 partnerships between parents or carers and
practitioners
 equality of opportunity for all children
EYFS aims to provide….
Emotional Well Being
The early years have a huge role to play in creating a
foundation for mental health in the future.
Childcare professionals play a vital role in supporting
children to develop the emotional and social skills that
will serve them throughout their lives.
Areas of Learning & Development
Prime Areas
 Communication & language
 Physical development
 Personal, social & emotional
development.
Specific Areas
 Literacy
 Mathematics
 Understanding the world
 Expressive arts and design
• playing and exploring -
children investigate and
experience things, and ‘have
a go’;
• active learning - children
concentrate and keep on
trying if they encounter
difficulties, and enjoy
achievements; and
• creating and thinking
critically - children have
and develop their own ideas,
make links between ideas,
and develop strategies for
doing things.
The Three characteristics of
effective teaching and learning are:
