WHAT IS ONE-ACT PLAY?
 A one-act play is a play that has only one act,
as distinct from plays that occur over several
acts.
 The act may be multiple and in variations.
Characteristics of
one-act-play
Characteristics
● There are one or more scenes in it.
● It’s written in a clear and succinct manner.
● It has a single prominent motif that gives a one –of-a-kind-
effect.
● It deals with the problems of everyday life as marriage,
punishment, labor conditions, divorce, etc.
● It has three parts: a beginning, a middle, and a conclusion.
Characteristics
● It establishes a tone or environment.
● The plot is simple, the action is concentrated, and the
impression is consistent.
● It has a small number of characters.
● The action begins right at the start of the play.

reader feel.

Exposition
The introduction or exposition explains the
situation with which the story begins.
Rising action
The rising action leads to the conflict
which refers to the story’s source of
problems being faced by the character/s.
Climax
● The climax is the most dramatic part of the
narrative where the characters are engaged in some
action resulting from the conflict.
● Highest point of interest, usually a question is
raised.
Falling action
Presents The falling action contains
the part where the characters try to
resolve the conflict.
Resolution
Resolution is the situation
with which the story ends.

Characters Language
Plot
 A one act play must have one central plot
 It needs to have conflict that is resolved by
the end.
 It needs to be a complete, compact drama,
with beginning, middle and end.
Theme
 It focuses on the subject of the play.
 The playwright’s directions, dialogues, and other
aspects all communicate it openly.
 It could be both implicit and explicit at the same time.
 The playwright’s point is conveyed through the theme.
Characters
 A one-act play will have four or fewer
characters that are developed in varying
degrees.
 Depending on the story you are trying to tell,
there may be one or more main characters.
Setting
A one-act play usually should be
set in a single location.
Language
 Its language is straightforward and easy to
understand.
 The dialogue must be purposeful.
 The most effective dialogue achieves clear
objectives
 Each word must be carefully selected, and
phrases must be concise and reduced.
Processing
1. What is Romeo and Juliet’s objective in the
scene?
2. What is the obstacle preventing them to
reach their goal?
3. What dramatic actions can be found
in the scene?

  • 4. WHAT IS ONE-ACT PLAY?  A one-act play is a play that has only one act, as distinct from plays that occur over several acts.  The act may be multiple and in variations.
  • 6. Characteristics ● There are one or more scenes in it. ● It’s written in a clear and succinct manner. ● It has a single prominent motif that gives a one –of-a-kind- effect. ● It deals with the problems of everyday life as marriage, punishment, labor conditions, divorce, etc. ● It has three parts: a beginning, a middle, and a conclusion.

Characteristics ● It establishes a tone or environment. ● The plot is simple, the action is concentrated, and the impression is consistent. ● It has a small number of characters. ● The action begins right at the start of the play. implied by an author's word choice and the way that the text can make a reader feel.
  • 10. Exposition The introduction or exposition explains the situation with which the story begins.
  • 11. Rising action The rising action leads to the conflict which refers to the story’s source of problems being faced by the character/s.
  • 12. Climax ● The climax is the most dramatic part of the narrative where the characters are engaged in some action resulting from the conflict. ● Highest point of interest, usually a question is raised.
  • 13. Falling action Presents The falling action contains the part where the characters try to resolve the conflict.
  • 14. Resolution Resolution is the situation with which the story ends.

  • 17. Plot  A one act play must have one central plot  It needs to have conflict that is resolved by the end.  It needs to be a complete, compact drama, with beginning, middle and end.
  • 18. Theme  It focuses on the subject of the play.  The playwright’s directions, dialogues, and other aspects all communicate it openly.  It could be both implicit and explicit at the same time.  The playwright’s point is conveyed through the theme.
  • 19. Characters  A one-act play will have four or fewer characters that are developed in varying degrees.  Depending on the story you are trying to tell, there may be one or more main characters.
  • 20. Setting A one-act play usually should be set in a single location.
  • 21. Language  Its language is straightforward and easy to understand.  The dialogue must be purposeful.  The most effective dialogue achieves clear objectives  Each word must be carefully selected, and phrases must be concise and reduced.
