2. Theme
ideas
Sinister Theme: This
theme would bring an
aspect of darkness to the
poster and intrigue the
audience to find out what
is going on in the fictional
world of “Hanging Hill
Lane”. This theme is
adopted in existing soap
opera posters to increase
the drama and
anticipation for the soap,
thus increasing the
tension. For example, the
EastEnders poster shown
below.
Horror: This theme would be
particularly relevant to the trailer for
‘Hanging Hill Lane’ as there are
frightening themes such as conflict,
stalking and kidnapping. This will give
the audience an idea of what to
expect, and as ‘Hanging Hill Lane’ is
more sinister than other soaps, it can
increase the interest in it.
Romance Theme: This theme could be relevant as the trailer
features an arguing couple. The poster could include them
together and will introduce the audience to the characters as
well as allowing them to start picking whose side to be on.
This could be a good theme to use as the arguing couple
characters could be at the center, with other characters
surrounding them and looking as if they’re observing them.
3. Tagline
ideas
“Once you’re in, you’re never
out…”
This adds an element of fear
and anticipation, as it makes
it clear that the characters
cannot escape. The second
person narrative of “you’re”
brings the audience into the
world of the soap as it
connotes that once they start
watching, they will be hooked
and wont be able to stop.
Additionally, ‘never out’
means that once you enter
‘Hanging Hill Lane’ there is no
escape from it, as well as
never being able to forget
what you’ve seen there,
making it appear as a
mysterious location.
“Who will win this battle?”
The question used here will ultimately make the audience think, however,
since it is a new soap they wont have any knowledge of the show to think
about. Therefore, it could entice them to watch the soap as they will want
to know what is going on inside the soap. Furthermore, ‘battle’ suggests
that there is conflict within the community, and characters are in a constant
struggle to come out on top and be the best, therefore being able to control
‘Hanging Hill Lane’
“Someone is always watching”
This could potentially create some fear among the audience and
concern for the characters. They could take on the role of the
“caregiver” (Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs ) thus making them feel
sympathy for some characters as they could be in danger. The verb
‘watching’ introduces suspicion and observation, as well as denoting
that whatever a character does, they’ll always get caught. This fits in
with the trailer as the girl who is walking through ‘Hanging Hill Lane’ is
seeing all of the corrupt events taking place.
“Where no one is controlled…”
This could entice the audience as
the characters cannot be
controlled, meaning they can do
almost anything. This will bring
suspicion to the audience and will
make them want to know what
they will do, and what extremes
the characters will go to, to fulfil
their ambitions. The use of ‘no
one’ suggests that the characters
want their activities to remain
unknown and will go to any
extreme to keep it a secret, as well
as not allowing themselves to be
controlled.
4. This tagline depicts that something serious is
going to happen and will cause the soap to be
forever changed. It has a full stop after
change and forever, making it more dramatic
and tense as it introduces a scary and
dramatic storyline.
This tagline is another dramatic sentence
depicting something serious is about to
happen. It denotes how the upcoming
storyline will not be boring and will be packed
with drama because the events which will
occur will forever changed the soap
Again, this tagline is dramatic and introduces
suspicion and mystery. This because the soap
is hinting at a storyline and what the outcome
will be, but does not give away too much
information, thus enticing the audience and
potentially new audience members.

5. Images
needed
A picture of Ashtead
Village
- This will be the
background for the poster.
- It will be taken at the
top of Ashtead Village
so that the whole
village is in view
- This will set the scene
for the soap and
introduce the audience
to what they can
expect to see in the
soap
- Image manipulation
will be used to make it
darker, also a red tone
might be added to
represent danger.
Pictures of some of the
characters in the trailer
- Myself, Mary, TJ, Jack, Zeyan,
Patrick
- Images taken will be
manipulated to decrease the
light and make them darker
- Will be organized in a way to
make Mary, TJ, Jack and
Patrick be looking towards
me and Zeyan as these two
characters have the most
dramatic scenes within the
trailer.
- Or they will be organized so
that the images of me, Mary,
TJ, Jack and Patrick are at the
front and Zeyan is in the
background looking at them
6. Synergy
with social
media
Twitter, Instagram and
Facebook logo
- #HangingHillLane will be
placed above the logos
- The logos will be in a row
at the bottom right of the
poster
Synergy with social media means that the audience will
be able to interact with the soap and build a ‘personal
relationship’ (Katz) with it and its characters. This will
entice them to watch the soap as they feel they know it
and its characters better and will want to stay up to
date with what is happening.
The fact that ‘Hanging Hill Lane’
is a new soap means that any of
the potential audience who see
this poster and thus see its
social media, will become
enticed to watch as it is new and
never seen before, and will have
some knowledge of the soap
before they even watch it due to
the image of Ashtead Village
and the images of some of the
characters. Therefore, it wont
feel completely new as they will
be familiar with some aspects of
it.
Those who go to the soap’s social media will
not only be able to interact with the soap, but
other audience members as well. They can
discuss the soap and what they expect from
the next episode, or discuss what went on in
the newest episode. This will make them feel
part of a community which will make them
want to continue watching and stay up to date
with the soap.

I will edit the
logos so that it is
just the outline
of the social
media logo to
make the poster
look more
professional.
7. Synergy
with
magazine
I will include reviews at
the top of the poster
identifying different
soap/TV magazines and
their review/comment
about ‘Hanging Hill Lane’
I will include a review
from my magazine “soap
delivery” to introduce
synergy between my two
ancillary products.
For this I will just be
using one word to
describe the soap.
I’ll present this by having
the amount of stars out of
five that each magazine
rates the soap along with
a comment and the name
of the magazine below it.
“SIMPLY AMAZING”
SOAP DELIVERY
E.g.
Ideas of comments:
• Extraordinary
• Remarkable
• Incredible
• Gripping
• Astounding
I got this idea from a previous students work. I think it
made their poster more professional and it makes it more
realistic, as well as enabling an audience to be enticed
because it looks like an entertaining and high quality soap.
8. Conclusion
1) What I need to do:
• I need to capture the images I need, such as one of Ashtead Village and the characters I
wish to include in the poster.
• I need to find possible font styles I could use on the poster (for example, downloading one
from dafont.com).
• I need to create a hand drawn draft so I know how to set out my poster.
2) What I need to organise and arrange:
• I need to organise a time to take pictures of the people I want in my poster. This is likely to
be during a media lesson.
• I need to find font styles
• I need to find social media logos such as Instagram with an outline only, if I cannot find
this I will have to manipulate the logo myself.
3) What software I will use:
• I will be using Adobe Photoshop to make sure that my poster is professional.
• I am familiar with Photoshop, therefore I am aware of the tools that should be used to
make the poster professional. It will also make the process of making the magazine
quicker.
