GLOBALIZATION IN 21ST CENTURY
EDUCATION

Definition
• Globalization is the process of international integration
arising from the interchange of world views, products,
ideas, and other aspects of culture.Put in simple terms,
globalization refers to processes that promote world-
wide exchanges of national and cultural resources.
Advances in transportation and telecommunications
infrastructure, including the rise of the Internet, are
major factors in globalization, generating further
interdependence of economic and cultural activities.(1)
• Globalization is the shift from a local workforce to a
competitive global workforce requiring all people to
compete across the world for availability of jobs.
Importance of Globalization in 21st
Education
• The average change to a global job market requires a shift in
educational goals and objectives as well as pedagogy (the method
and practice of teaching), to ensure our students have the largest
advantage possible.
• Whether or not schools can adapt to this changing trend will affect
the economy as a whole along with individual workers. According to
recent studies, how well students do on international assessments
of reading, math, and science predicts their future personal
earnings and income distribution as well as national economic
growth.
• Graduating students will need the higher-order thinking skills
described in the previous section on automation along with global
literacy (the knowledge of people and cultures outside the United
States) to succeed in the 21st century workplace
How to Apply Globalization to 21st
Century Education
• Should our education system fail to produce average to above average graduates, when
compared to the rest of the world, then our students will not have a chance leading us to
failure.
• Employers consistently rank collaboration very high on their list of “must have”
competencies, which is not surprising given changes in the workplace. This broad
competency is best understood as a cluster of related “interpersonal skills” that give one the
power to interact effectively with others, including the ability to communicate effectively
both orally and in writing, to relate well to others and cooperate with them, to negotiate and
manage conflicts, and to lead through persuasion. When asked about these separate
interpersonal skills, employers rate graduates worst in oral and written communications. But
classroom teachers should bear the only responsibility: Research shows that athletics and
other student activities (yearbook, student government, etc.) can help students develop skills
related to leadership and teamwork and have a positive impact on later earnings.
• Experts predict that creativity and innovation will become more important given economic
trends, both for individual corporations and for the U.S. as a whole. While there is a large
body of research and advice about encouraging creativity in students, school districts should
first carefully consider how they are defining this competency since it can mean many
different things to different people. For example, a recent study found significant differences
in how district superintendents define creativity compared with what employers need. While
superintendents ranked the ability to solve problems as the most important indicator of a
creative person, employers said it is most important to be able to identify problems.
Employers also thought it much more important that students be comfortable facing a
problem with “no right answer,” which suggests that schools must find more ways to give
students more complex and unstructured problems and fewer multiple choice questions.
Example of Globalization in 21st
Century
• Standardized testing, comparative results, outsourced
jobs (call center)
• Business has the prime responsibility to come up with
the technologies, the know-how, the products and
services, the business models and the management
solutions that will help us to meet the sustainability
challenges. And companies must learn to cooperate
with governments and NGOs in these efforts. I want to
give you a few specific examples, from Philips’ own
experience, to illustrate the importance of a joint effort
in the promotion of sustainability-geared business.
Role Of Technology
• Technology is the medium that has allowed
globalization to occur. It allows tasks to be
completed collaboratively from anywhere in
the world giving rise to this global market. All
students must be familiar enough to use
technology to allow them access to the
market.
