On September 15th, Green IT Amsterdam and Paris Region Entreprises invited you to join them in Paris and get some insight into European knowledge and expertise on datacenters, especially on the sustainability issues.
WE learned more about the PEDCA project and How to reorganize computer rooms and data centers in an energy efficient way !

2. Summary
•French start up, 3 years
•Strong links with research :
–partner Dr Jean Marc Menaud is an international specialist on virtualization and green IT
Our mission is to find solutions to reduce IT Consumption
•4 software solutions (from servers to switchs) :
–Track DC (measure physical servers)
–Optimize DC (dynamic capacity management)
–DC Scope (virtualization management)
–SW Scope (Switch power management)
3. Our Green IT experience
•We already mesured and analysed the IT of more than 50 organizations
4. Our observation
•Green IT is not at all a priority for companies, and more for IT services :
–Not a goal
•The CIO Priority is « only » to Maintain the quality of service (and security):
–They have plenty of new projects and no time for non-priority actions
5. Our vision
•Green IT solutions must :
–Be compatible with CIO challenges
–Integrated in their constraints :
•Security / no risk
•Time
•And budget
•Concerning the budget, the reduction of electricity bill is often not enough to motivate the CIO.
–It’s not a lot
–They don’t pay the bill
6. Security
•New solutions must :
–not be risky :
•And moreover not appear risky
–if possible, brings more security :
•New vision,
7. Time
•New solutions must :
–Not take time :
•To implement
•To use
–be provided in the IT plan
– if possible, will save time
8. Budget
•New solutions must :
–Provide a return on investment :
•Electricity bill
•Investment, maintenance,…
10. An other observation
•Virtualization is not “well managed”
•Virtual machine (VM) are often
•Lazy
•Idle
•Ghost
•Oversized…
•We don’t use all the “potency” of virtualization
•It results wrong vision of real capacity
•Overcost,
•Purchase of new physical servers…
