2. Why are we here today?
Our Goal:
To move from thinking
“How do I get out of co-teaching?”
(thinking of co-teaching as a
punishment) to
“How do I get selected to co-teach
again?”.
Co-Teaching Workshop
at Lambert
● What is co-teaching?
● Accommodation Explanation
● Who are our co-teaching pairs?
● How do we co-teaching?

4. Today, we promise…
● To respect your anonymity.
To participate in respectful dialogue to better understand.
● That no admin, team leader, department chair, or person of perceived
authority will take PERSONAL offense to our conversations.
What other norms can we add to make sure
today’s discussion is productive?

6. Who is at the table with you?
WOULD YOU RATHER…
...eat no candy at Halloween or no turkey at Thanksgiving?
...read the book or watch the movie?
...text using only emojis or only abbreviations?
...have no sense of taste or no sense of smell?
...know how you will die or when you will die?
...speak to animals or know all languages?
...read minds or accurately predict the future?
12. We need YOU for feedback. REAL feedback.

14. What it is and, More Importantly, What it isn’t

15. THE DISTRICT SAYS...
● Two Certified Teachers Leading Instruction with no clear
delineation between the teachers.
● Shared Responsibility for ALL students (“OUR Students”).
● Purposeful instruction with both teachers actively engaged.
● Takes place in the general education classroom with many
opportunities for differentiated instruction.
SUPPORTED INSTRUCTION is different...or is it???
16. The Real Deal on Supportive Instruction
● They could be
○ Certified Teachers out of content (think about THAT for a hot
minute)
○ A Certified Paraprofessional
■ Can’t access grade book
■ Most likely has not gone through teaching program
18. Why Accommodations?
Accommodations are required to be implemented as stated in the IEP.
Accommodations change how a student accesses
information and demonstrates learning.
● Allow students to more fully participate in learning
● Provide equal access to learning
● Provide equal opportunity to demonstrate knowledge
19. Accommodations = Access
Allow the student to complete the same
assignment or test as other students,
but with a change to how it is accessed.
Accommodations level the playing field
but do not give the student a leg up!
Think: glasses for those who don’t have 20/20 vision or a
hearing aid for someone who is partially deaf or even crutches
for a person who broke their leg and needed surgery.
21. Accommodations and the Law
● According to Federal Law, IDEA and Section 504, an
IEP is required to address the specific
accommodations that are needed for each student to
access the general curriculum.
● Teachers are required and accountable for providing
accommodations that are stated in the IEP.
● Failure to implement accommodations may lead to
legal action.
22. But...
WHAT IF A STUDENT REFUSES THEIR
ACCOMMODATIONS?
● Document the Refusal in IC.
● Contact the Parent (phone call and/or follow-up email).
● Pattern of refusal? Contact Case Manager to inform them of the
pattern. They may hold an IEP meeting to address the refusal.
23. Do you have any other questions or
concerns about accommodations or
how to provide them?
24. The question that comes up the most when working
with teachers in co-taught classes…
“Can’t you just make a schedule change to put them in
small group classes?”
32. Review the models with your co-teacher.
What model do you find yourself doing on a regular basis?
Why? Does it work best for your students? Is it
comfortable? What model makes you the least
comfortable? What model are you both most willing to try
in the next few weeks? What lesson do you think you
could align it with?
33. Think back to the Perfect
Co-teacher game -
What different models would
each of those teachers feel
most comfortable with? Why
do you think this? What might
be a reach model?
The Teams

● Boling/Hill (1 period/day)
