2. LANGUAGE
Regarding language I made sure that I tried to address my readers/audience
in an almost personal/informal yet professional way. After researching into
several different pre-existing magazines I have realised that this is technique
many magazines use which seems to be very effective, therefore I have tried
to adopt this approach into my own production. I tried various different
language techniques in an attempt to grab my reader’s attention, for example
different language techniques like alliteration (which is evident on my cover
page subheadings and double page spread title). As well as grabbing my
readers attention I also feel as though language techniques make a text seem
less boring and more inviting to read, which is a characteristic I was very keen
to include.
Examples of language techniques
in my work which hopefully engage with my audience
and encourage them to pick up and buy BASE.
3. FONTS
With reference to my choice of fonts I made sure that for my
R&B magazine productions I carefully chose which font I used
as with my preliminary task I used a rather basic and
unprofessional font which reduced the overall standard of the
product. To overcome this problem I researched into what
kind of fonts pre-existing R&B magazines used as these are
the kind of magazines my audience/readers will be reading,
therefore incorporating popular fonts will hopefully grab more
readers attention. I made an online survey which I published
various different social media sites (for example Facebook and
Twitter) and asked my friends and family to share my survey
on their pages too to ensure I was receiving feedback from a
variety of people.
4. ONLINE SURVEY
This is an example
of one of the posts I
made online on
social media
asking people for
feedback on
font/genre of
audience
and title using a free
online survey
website
This is an
example of
a question I
asked
on my online
survey
with reference
to
my fonts.
5. PRICE
My target audience age ranges from mid teenagers to
around late twenties, therefore I believe this type of
target audience will not be willing to over spend on a
magazine due to their other expenses (for example
books, food, going out etc). An example of a typical
reader of my magazine is a university student studying
music, therefore due to them paying their own way in life
in terms of food, going out, books.. they will not be
willing to spend a tremendous amount of a non-essential
magazine like BASE. Therefore to attract to my target
audience I priced my magazine at £2.99 which I as a result
of my research found that this was around average for a
music magazine aimed at my target audience.
6. COVER PAGE
In order for my magazine to
stand out with my target
audience I decided it was
essential for me to mention the
names of famous artists within
my target age range that
applied to both genders.
Therefore I used examples such
as Beyoncé, Rihanna, Frank
Ocean, Drake; all of whom are
famous within the R&B genre
and especially within my target
age group. Furthermore to
ensure my target audience
engage with my magazine I
made the font of all my cover
lines very clear and easy to
read, to make sure that all my
potential readers are able to
comprehend.
From my research into what
sort of magazine conventions
my target age group liked I
found that a younger audience
liked to feel involved in a
magazine, for example by
taking a quiz or entering a
competition. Therefore I
addressed this in my front
cover and contents page
through the use of a puff. On
my cover page I used a puff to
advertise a quiz which I know
will be popular therefore I
decided this was an important
feature to include on my cover
page rather than another page
to engage my audience.
My image/model is modern, urban and fashionable, all qualities which appeal to a younger audience. I
also feel as though this image appeals to both genders; it appeals to men in the sense my model is
dressed in a rather provocative way and from my research this is a quality the majority men claim to
prefer when purchasing a magazine, however it does appeal to women in the fact that my model is
wearing fashionable and modern clothes which is a quality the majority of women claim to prefer.
7. CONTENTS PAGE
From my extensive
research into pre-existing
professional magazines I
concluded that the
favourite and most popular
R&B styled magazine within
my target audience was
VIBE magazine, therefore I
tried adopt a few of their
unique conventions into my
own work. For example the
layout of the title of my
contents page. I felt as
though if I incorporated
pre-existing popular
conventions into my work
this will contribute towards
more people being
interested in BASE.
As mentioned before I felt
that the use of advertising
events/quiz’s/competitions
which are popular among
the younger generation is
important as the younger
generation of both genders
like to feel involved with the
magazine and identify with
it. This was evident in my
cover page but also my
contents page where I
advertise a Drake concert.
This appeals to my audience as
Drake is a current, famous and
modern R&B/pop styled artist who
is very popular amongst both
genders of the younger generation.
Drake concert tickets also appeals to
my socio-economic status of my
magazine as the tickets are not
excessively expensive (which is a
benefit as my socio-economic status
target audience is around average,
which co-insides with the price of
my magazine.)
8. DOUBLE PAGE SPREADI found that in many
professional magazines
the double page spread
texts related to an
artists journey of how
they have become
famous and successful,
therefore in order for
my double page spread
text to appeal to my
target audience I tried
to make my text
relatable and
interesting for my
readers and I
incorporated this idea ‘a
struggle’, by in depth
explaining Indias hard
journey to successful
(i.e. being born into
poverty in Indonesia
and having to busk her
way on the streets of
London for her talents
to be noticed).
I also found that the
majority of
professional
magazines use vectors
relating to music and
music-related topics. I
feel as though they
appeal especially to
the younger
generation as they
make the page seem
more interesting and
inviting to read.
I am aware that many of my readers (being part of
the younger generation) will be interested in fashion,
therefore I decided to add a few polaroid styled
photos of an interesting unique modern photo
shoot/outfit to appeal to my readers and feel more
interested and willing to read about Indias
background.
