Digital literacy
Digital literacy or the ability to understand and fully
participate in the digital world is fundamental to digital
citizenship.
It is the combination of technical and social skills that enable
a person to be successful and safe in the information age.
Like literacy and numeracy initiatives which provide people
with the skills to participate in the work force, digital literacy
has become an essential skill to be a confident, connected,
and actively involved life long learner.

Practical ideas for bringing DC into practice
Young students: could draw a good digital citizen.
Label an anonymous ‘citizen’ photo. See this poster or
this poster. Role play scenarios. Use resources from
Hectors World.
Older students: could enter ideas about what it means
to be a good digital citizen on padlet or Google
presentation and publish to their class blog. Write a
rap or song. Review authentic scenarios and give
advice/response. Create a video to show others how
to be a good digital citizen. Use resources from
Netsafe OWLS

WHAT DOES RESPONSIBLE USE ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE?
I am responsible when I use my device by…
I am respectful when I write comments on a site (YouTube) when I...
You can tell if I am being fair on my device when I…
I can build trust when using my device by….
You know that I am following the rules on ________ when you see me….
If I am unsure of something I see online, these are the three steps I will
take….

Moral Compass Scenarios
For all of the following scenarios, identify which
aspect of the Responsible Use Agreement is not
being followed.
Then record your response, both for the students
involved and the whole class. Find an online
resource to help support the teaching point.
Scenario 1 -- Upsetting image, Scenario 2 - Personal
information, Scenario 3 - Photos, Scenario 4 - Blogging
feedback
46. www.tetoitupu.org
Scenario 1
A student is looking for photos on their inquiry topic
to learn more about animals. She finds an
upsetting image. She tells a friend and shows her
friend the photo.
● Understand that I may experience problems when I see technology and that I will learn to deal with them.
I understand that there will be times when technology may not work as I expected it to, or that people may be mean or unkind to me
online. When these things happen, I know that there are ways I can deal with it. I also know there are people I can go to, to get help if I
don’t know what to do next.

Role play what to do when inappropriate images appear- who to tell- turn off monitor
record child’s name- ring parents/ block site inform Lavinia
to avoid this happening- specific keyword search- preview youtube clips before showing students
47. www.tetoitupu.org
Scenario 2
Your students are sharing information about
themselves on the class blog. The students have
added a photo, written about themselves using
their first and surnames, their room number, their
age, ethnicity and their family members names.
● Will always respect people’s privacy and freedom of speech online.
I understand that some information is private. I will be careful when using full names, birthdays, addresses and
photos of other people and of my own. I also know that I will not always agree with what people say online but that
does not mean that I can stop them or use it as an excuse to be unkind to them.
We need to explain to children about the importance of keeping ourselves safe and why we need to protect
ourselves from strangers.
48. www.tetoitupu.org
Scenario 3
Your students are researching information to
support their inquiry learning. They want to use
photos in their presentation and want to use
images from the internet. They are able to save
images and paste them into their presentation.
Type your response here:
● Will be a confident and capable user of ICT.
I know what I do and do not understand about the technologies that I use. I will get help where I need it.
Students have to type in keywords relevant to research. Teachers may need to teach this skill.
Students to critically select the appropriate images in terms of alignment with the topic. If any
inappropriate images are displayed they need to report any concerns immediately to the teacher.
Activity: Trash and Treasure - words and photos
Guidance here
49. www.tetoitupu.org
Scenario 4
Your students have learnt how to post feedback on
the class blog. Your class blog is not set to
moderate comments, meaning that all comments
are published immediately. You read a negative
comment which has been posted anonymously.
Type your response here:
● Will be honest and fair in all of my actions using ICT. Hurts someones feelings.
● Will always use ICT to communicate with others in positive, meaningful ways.
The teacher needs to be vigilant in checking emails once moderating has been turned on.
A hot seating lesson could be used to talk about how they are feeling and the effect
negative commments have.
What positive comments look like. Videos on what a quality comment looks like.
