Chapter 9, Lesson 5: Problem Subjects
Collective Nouns:
-name groups of people or things- (group, crew, flock, etc.)
-can take singular or plural verbs, depending on how they are used
Singular: when it refers to people or things acting as a group
EX: The faculty sponsors an art exhibit each year.
Plural: when it refers to people or things acting as individuals
EX: The faculty disagree on the rules of the exhibit.

Singular Nouns ending in s:
-Some nouns that end in s or ics look plural but actually
refer to singular concepts.
-When they are used as subjects, they take singular verbs
EX: measles, politics, mathematics, etc
Titles:
-titles of works of art, literature, and music are singular
EX: The Outsiders is a popular young-adult novel.

Amounts and Time:
-words/phrases that express weights, measures, numbers, and
lengths of time are treated as singular.
EX: Five hours is a long time to wait for lunch.

Fractions
-can take a singular or plural verb, depending on whether it
refers to a single part or to a number of items.
EX: Five-sixths of the canvas is blank.
EX: Two-thirds of the paintings are abstract.

The news (promotes, promote) new arts and artists.
Physics (was, were) studied by many sculptors.
Picasso's Three Musicians (is, are) on permanent display at
the Museum of Modern Art.

Plural: when it refers to people or things acting as individuals EX: The faculty disagree on the rules of the exhibit. 2
