Role play – Induction process for new employees.
INDUCTION PROCESS
The following induction sets out our
Occupational Heath and Safety (OHS)
practices.
The purpose of this induction is to ensure
our workplace remains a safe place to work
and visit.
 Read through each
slide in order
 Ask your supervisor or
the safety
representative if you
have any questions or
suggestions
 A copy of this
induction and all
supporting
information is in
your pack

CURRENT
SAFETY PROCEDURES
 Ergonomic workstation setup
 Observe warning signs
 Clean up any spills or messes immediately
 Keep all walkways and work areas clear of trip hazards
 Use relevant safety equipment at all times
 Comply with manual handling procedures
 Report any incidents, accidents or near misses
 Follow emergency procedures
 Training must be completed before using identified equipment.
 Support a mentally healthy workplace culture.
Perform your work in a safe manner by
following these procedures

EQUIPMENT SAFETY CHECKS
 Each day visually check equipment to be used.
 Report any identified issues immediately.
 All equipment is logged and assigned a maintenance and service schedule.
This schedule can be found on the safety noticeboard.
 All electrical equipment is checked and tagged by an electrician annually.
 Ask if you are unsure about the use and safety of any of the equipment you
use.
It is important that we all take an
active part ensuring all equipment
used is safe.

EXISTING AND POTENTIAL
HAZARDS
 Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI)
 Eye strain
 Lifting, carrying and moving heavy items
 Poor ergonomics
 Tripping, slipping and falling
 Electrical shock
 Stress
 Accidents and injury from misuse of equipment
 Chemicals and irritants
 Staffroom food safety

CONTROLLING RISKS
 Take a 5 minute break every 30 minutes and a 10 minute break every hour.
Vary tasks to avoid doing the same thing for a long period.
 Ensure office lighting is adequate. Arrange replacement of bulbs as required
and use desk lamp if needed. Adjust window shades as need through the
day. Ensure computer screen is at the optimal position and glare is adjusted.
 Correct procedure must be followed when lifting. Training is provided and
reviewed annually.
 Ensure you work ergonomically. Make sure your workstation is adjusted to
suit you, support your posture and the work you are doing.
 Keep walkways clear to avoid tripping hazards. Clean up any spills
immediately and place warning signage or barricades if necessary.

CONTROLLING RISKS
 Ensure the equipment you use is safe. Check cords and power source
and report any problems immediately.
 Be aware of your mental health and that other workers and seek help as
soon as possible.
 Correct procedures must be followed when using equipment. Training
must be completed if using identified equipment.
 Chemicals must be used, stored and handled safely. If you are required
to use chemicals, relevant training must be completed. Read and refer
to Material Data Sheets.
 The staffroom is for the use of all staff. Ensure that you clean up after
use and dispose of unwanted food in the appropriate bin.

PROCEDURE FOR REPORTING
MINOR RISKS AND INCIDENTS
SUBMIT FORM TO THE SAFETY REPRESENTATIVE
As soon as possible submit your completed form to the Safety Representative. This form will then be addressed by
the safety committee and appropriate action will be taken.
COMPLETE A HAZARD REPORT
As soon as possible complete the Hazard Report Form. A copy of this form is in your pack or can be found with the
first aid kit in the staffroom. Your supervisor can help you complete the form.
ADVISE SUPERVISOR IMMEDIATELY
Attend to any injury and ensure, if possible, that the area is safe. Your supervisor will notify the Safety Representative.

REPORT THE INCIDENT
The safety representative will immediately phone WorkSafe Tasmania on 1300 366 322 and complete and lodge the
incident notice form within 48 hours.
SECURE THE AREA
Make site safe to prevent further injury. Preserve site for further investigation. Complete a serious incident
report form.
ATTEND TO THE INJURED
Notify emergency services if necessary. Get help if needed. Notify supervisor and safety representative who will
notify the family and take control of the situation.

CONSULTATIVE PROCESS FOR
OHS ISSUES
 The Hazard Report is reviewed by Safety Representative who will consult with
those employees affected by the issue.
 The Report will be discussed and evaluated by the safety committee. Relevant
employees will be included in these discussions where necessary.
 A course of action will be set and the implementation supervised by the Safety
Representative.
 Any changes to practices or procedures will be advised via the safety
noticeboard, staff meetings and in some cases email.
 If training is required, a training schedule will be set and all affected employees
will be notified.
When a Hazard Report form is submitted to Safety
Representative the following process is followed.

PROCEDURES
FOR EMERGENCIES
 Know where your nearest emergency exit is and the escape
route.
 Know where your assembly point is.
 Know where the fire alarm and fire extinguishers are.
 Know your fire warden and safety representative.
 Know your first aid officer and where to find the first aid kit.
Be Prepared

EVACUATION
 Keep Calm
 If you have time turn off any electrical equipment.
 In case of fire close the doors as you go but do not lock.
 Assist anyone in immediate danger.
 Leave the building via the nearest escape route.
 Obey wardens directions.
 Move to assembly point.
 Don’t re-enter the building until advised.

FIRE
 Ring 000 then ring reception on ext 111.
 Assist anyone in immediate danger.
 Only use fire extinguisher if trained.
 Obey wardens directions.
 Close the doors as you go but do not lock.
 Leave the building via the nearest safe escape
route.
 Move to assembly point.

LOCKDOWN
 Keep calm
 Lock all doors
 Close curtains and blinds
 Turn off lights and screens
 Find a safe place away from intruder sight lines.
 Wait for advise from management or police.

ASSAULT OR THREAT
 Keep calm
 Avoid eye contact
 Avoid antagonising the person
 Alert others if safe to do so
 Try and remember as much information about the
offender as possible and write it down when its possible
to do so
 When possible alert reception and/or call 000
 Stay on the line

POWER OUTAGES
 Stay calm
 Provide assistance to others if necessary
 Report the outage. Use mobile phone if needed.
 Turn off andor unplug electrical equipment.
 If evacuating move carefully and follow lighted signs to
emergency exits and then to assembly point.
 Use lift phone to contact help if stranded in lift during an
outage.

EMPLOYERS OHS
RESPONSIBILITIES
 Ensure as much as possible the health and safety of workers.
 Maintain workplace free from risks to health and safety.
 Maintain safe equipment and environment.
 Provide the training and information needed to ensure the
safe use, handling and storage of equipment and chemicals.
 Monitor the health and safety of workers to prevent to
prevent illness or injury of workers carrying out their duties
 Include workers in the consultation process of matters relating
to health and safety

WORKERS OHS
RESPONSIBILITIES
 Work in a way that protects your health and safety and that of the
people you work with.
 Follow reasonable instruction given by management.
 Comply with any reasonable health and safety procedure that has
been passed on to you.
 Not misuse or interfere with anything provided for work health and
safety
 Report all incidents and near misses immediately, no matter how
trivial
 Work with the safety representative to identify, assess and control
hazards and the effectiveness of such controls.
 Report all know or observed hazards to their supervisor or safety
representative.

Relevant employees will be included in these discussions where necessary.  A course of action will be set and the implementation supervised by the Safety Representative.  Any changes to practices or procedures will be advised via the safety noticeboard, staff meetings and in some cases email.  If training is required, a training schedule will be set and all affected employees will be notified. When a Hazard Report form is submitted to Safety Representative the following process is followed. 11

PROCEDURES FOR EMERGENCIES  Know where your nearest emergency exit is and the escape route.  Know where your assembly point is.  Know where the fire alarm and fire extinguishers are.  Know your fire warden and safety representative.  Know your first aid officer and where to find the first aid kit. Be Prepared 12

EVACUATION  Keep Calm  If you have time turn off any electrical equipment.  In case of fire close the doors as you go but do not lock.  Assist anyone in immediate danger.  Leave the building via the nearest escape route.  Obey wardens directions.  Move to assembly point.  Don’t re-enter the building until advised. 13

FIRE  Ring 000 then ring reception on ext 111.  Assist anyone in immediate danger.  Only use fire extinguisher if trained.  Obey wardens directions.  Close the doors as you go but do not lock.  Leave the building via the nearest safe escape route.  Move to assembly point.  Don’t re-enter the building until advised. 14
  • 15. LOCKDOWN  Keep calm  Lock all doors  Close curtains and blinds  Turn off lights and screens  Find a safe place away from intruder sight lines.  Wait for advise from management or police. 15

ASSAULT OR THREAT  Keep calm  Avoid eye contact  Avoid antagonising the person  Alert others if safe to do so  Try and remember as much information about the offender as possible and write it down when its possible to do so  When possible alert reception and/or call 000  Stay on the line 16
  • 17. POWER OUTAGES  Stay calm  Provide assistance to others if necessary  Report the outage. Use mobile phone if needed.  Turn off andor unplug electrical equipment.  If evacuating move carefully and follow lighted signs to emergency exits and then to assembly point.  Use lift phone to contact help if stranded in lift during an outage. 17

EMPLOYERS OHS RESPONSIBILITIES  Ensure as much as possible the health and safety of workers.  Maintain workplace free from risks to health and safety.  Maintain safe equipment and environment.  Provide the training and information needed to ensure the safe use, handling and storage of equipment and chemicals.  Monitor the health and safety of workers to prevent to prevent illness or injury of workers carrying out their duties  Include workers in the consultation process of matters relating to health and safety 18

WORKERS OHS RESPONSIBILITIES  Work in a way that protects your health and safety and that of the people you work with.  Follow reasonable instruction given by management.  Comply with any reasonable health and safety procedure that has been passed on to you.  Not misuse or interfere with anything provided for work health and safety  Report all incidents and near misses immediately, no matter how trivial  Work with the safety representative to identify, assess and control hazards and the effectiveness of such controls.  Report all know or observed hazards to their supervisor or safety representative. 19
