CHAPTER I: INTRODUCTION
1. 1. Internship aims:
In Viet Nam, the profession of translator has become more and more important
because in the context of integration with the world, Vietnam has become an
official member of the WTO. English is increasing. The interpreter becomes an
important bridge of language and culture.
The center for labor demand and labor market information under the
Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs of Ho Chi Minh City, said
that in the 2017-2025 period, HCM City needs 270,000 to 300,000 human resources
(of which 130,000 new job). The demand for human resources in the social sciences
sector accounts for 2% of the total, of which about 1,000 are needed.
This demand is not much in quantity but an important profession. This is also a high
income job with an average salary of 10-15 million per month. At the conference,
high-level negotiation, the salary is calculated in hours from several hundred dollars
or more. With some less common languages such as German, Italian ... the salary is
higher.
A simple interpretation is the transfer of a word, a sentence, a text (say or write)
from one language to another without changing their meaning. And, of course,
translators are professionals who translate texts (say or write) from one language
into another, so that people who do not share a language can understand each other.
Based on two basic types of human communication (speaking and writing), the
universities divide the translation work into two forms: interpreter and translator.
The universities also focus on training of four language skills , sepeacially
(speaking and writing. Translation and interpretion tasks will help students after
graduation and practice will find good jobs with high income. Thus, internship
plays an important role in improving fresh graduates’ skills before working.

1.2. The reason for choosing the internship.
The internship helps the student to access the work environment in a company,
so that conditions can compare and contrast between the theory, knowledge is
learned in the school with the practice at the practice. Therefore, the student must

interpreting. However, the translator needs knowledge to turn it into a complete
translation. Therefore, the trainee must study continuously and relentlessly,
especially in general and specialized knowledge. In addition, it requires skills in
front of the crowd, if timid, shy is not appropriate to do this job.
Interpretation is a profession that many students choose to study foreign languages
after graduation, especially the students have orientation translation-interpretion
from the beginning. Knowledge of the school equips the student to be ready to step

settings and smaller meetings. Liaison is usually used for public service, such as in
a hospital or legal setting, and the interpreter will check the listener understands
after each sentence.
The team has responsibilities to attend meetings or conferences as the clients’

CHAPTER 3: INTERNSHIP
3.1. Internship Activities
Students practice two main contents of the translation & interpretation office at the
company, which is interpreting and translating
3.1.1. Translation
a. Translation Process of Telegraphic Transfers
 Step 1: Determine the type of ways of Telegraphic transfers (TT)
When receiving sales contracts or orders,.. with the payment term of TT, The
translator needs to ask for ways and money to transfer to partners such as:
(1) TT 100% in advance
(2) TT 100% after the shipment
(3) TT 100% against the import export documents
(4) TT 30% in advance and 70% within 3 days before the shipment.
(5) TT 30% in advance and 70% within 3 days after the shipment.
 Step 2: Focus on the most important words are that:
 In advance in (1) means Trước
 After in (2) means Sau
 Against in (3) means Ngay khi
 Before in (4) means Trước
 Within in (5) means Trong vòng
These key words are very important that have effect on the ways, the time
and the amount of mounts the consignee pays to the consignor.
 Step 3: Check mistakes and the meaning of the words used in this
translation.
Firstly, the student has to understand correct requirement from senders. In
case the translator has no very clear requirement of translation. The student cannot
use exact words described in this terms according to international payment

Secondly, check the mistake from the script. In case there are some mistakes,
the problems will happen to both buyer and seller.
b. Translation Process of Letter of Credit.( L/C)
 Step 1: Determine the types of L/C
There are many kinds of L/C
(1) Irrevocable LC.
(2) Irrevocable LC at sight
(3) Irrevocable LC after sight
(4) Revocable LC.
(5) Stand-by LC.
(6) Confirmed LC.
(7) Unconfirmed LC.
(8) Transferable LC.
(9) Back-to-Back LC.
(10) Payment at Sight LC..
When receiving sales contracts or orders,... with the payment term of L/C, The
student needs to find out exact kinds of L/C which senders want to translate. In case
translator choose wrong kinds of L/C, there will be the big problem impacting on
both of consignees and consignor. The problems is about time of payment,
capability of being revoked or canceled,.....
 Step 2: Focus on the most important words are that:
 Irrevocable in (1) means không thể hủy ngang
 At sight in (2) means trả ngay
 after sight in (3) means trả sau (bao nhiêu ngày)
 Revocable in (4) means có thể hủy ngang
 Stand-by in (5) means dự phòng
 Confirmed in (6) means xác nhận

 Unconfirmed in (7) means không xác nhận

These key words are crucial important because every L/C has different terms
and conditions from others.
For example:
An irrevocable letter of credit is a financial instrument used by banks to
guarantee a buyer's obligations to a seller. It is irrevocable because the letter of
credit cannot be modified unless all parties agree to the modifications. It means that
one partner cannot cancel this L/C if there is no agreement from other partner.
While irrevocable A revocable letter of credit can be changed or cancelled
by the bank that issued it at any time and for any reason; or cancelled by the
partners in case they do not want to buy or sell products any more.
 Step 3: Check mistakes and the meaning of the words used in this
translation.
The staff have to understand clearly about these L/Cs becuase there are many
types of L/Cs and they are also very comlicated about their terms and conditions.
Moreover, L/C is compulsory, so the translator should check meaning of all
terms and condition carefully, if no, there will be risky for the company.
Secondly, check the mistake from the drafts before issuing the originals. In
case there are some mistakes, The buyer have the right to refuse payment, or it cost
us some money for discrepancies.
c. Translation Process of Documentary Collection
 Step 1: Determine the type of Documentary Collection
When receiving sales contracts or orders,.. with the payment term of
Documents against Payment, The translator needs to know which one the senders
want to use DP or DAP because there are some kinds of Documentary Collection
such as:

i. Documents against Acceptance (DA)
ii. Documents against Payment (DP) at 90 days sight
iii. Documents against Payment (DP) at 150 days bill of lading date
 Step 2: Focus on the most important words are that:
 against in (i.) means ngay khi
 Acceptance in (i.) means chấp nhận
 at 90 days sight in (ii.) means Sau 90 ngày
 at 150 days bill of lading date in (iii.) means sau 150 kể từ ngày
phát hành vận tải đơn
These key words are very important that have effect on the time in which the
consignee pays to the consignor.
 Step 3: Check mistakes and the meaning of the words used in this
translation.
The student has to distinguish between DA and DP to make sure that the
translation will be correct as senders’ requirement.
Both DA and DP are the terms of payment related to acceptance of shipping
documents pertaining to each consignment from buyer’s bank. Under a DA terms of
payment, importer accepts documents on the basis of an assurance to effect payment
by accepting necessary bill of exchange. The importer collects shipping documents
required to take delivery of imported goods from his bank after such assurance on
payment at mutually agreed maturity date of payment.
In a DP payment terms, the imported need to effect payment against
respective import consignment, before collecting documents for delivery of
imported goods. Under a payment terms – Documents against Payments, the bank
delivers documents required for import clearance only after receiving the value of
goods from the importer. The buyer takes delivery of goods with the original
transport document of title delivered by his bank after effecting payment under sale
of goods mentioned in the document. The buyer’s bank in turn, sends the said

amount to seller’s bank as per banking procedures and formalities under
international trade. By the way, the translator should check grammar and the use of
words in this payment.
3.1.2. Interpretation
Interpretation is a profession that requires constant cultivation. Besides
attractiveness, this is a job that requires a lot of skill and knowledge. The challenge
will not be small.
Due to graduation and lack of experience, students can not immediately
become an expert translator, but students know how to prepare knowledge before

Thirdly, Students need to be able to organize good work, This is very important.
Work schedules should not be too dense, take the appropriate preparation time,

requirements or to know the exact time - know the job. Moreover, the student must
take the initiative in front of the audience if conditions are available to get familiar
with their language style, pronunciation ...
Fourthly, Students need to be thoughtful, responsible in work and in the market.
As hundreds of other occupations, interpreters need to always be attentive, check
every detail before entering and when to take the job, should have the responsibility
to come along and always learn to improve knowledge.

Occupational accident
Occupational accidents are unavoidable in all occupations, but occupational

unexpected accidents, forgetting preparation materials ...
Moreover, a future interpreter will find no shortage of types of accidents, "face
loss", "brand" is severely affected, "image" is devastated ... the consequences of the
accident job.
3.2. An assessment of the internship
The student knows about translating and interpreting activities. The student is
encouraged to actively engage in these real situations in the work. Moreover, the
student is trained to approach business knowledge when translating some import
and export documents like sales contracts, letter of credit,….. In addition, the

information precisely. I also learnt how to interact effectively with colleagues, and
the managers, too.
Problem solving skill
In my internship, I did learn and accumulate experience on problem-solving
skill. For example, when I experienced unexpected stations, I had to make an idea to
handle the situation. Thus, I sometimes faced troubles, however I learnt much about
my failure. This boosted the teams’ atmosphere and helped understand more about
us.
3.2.2. Management techniques observed.
Throughout the internship period, I learnt the time management techniques
from my director. There were 2 main techniques to keep management successful:
Making To-do-list
Making a list concluding all the tasks that needed finishing helped me to
increase productivity in work performances and keep myself motivated. Besides,
this gave me a hand in remembering all the daily tasks.
Prioritizing works
This type of technique helped me to notice which work should be done first
and ones should be done afterwards. It helped me to order tasks with different
priorities.
3.2.3. Technical skills employed
Teamwork
First of all, I can say that teamwork is a huge part of the university life. I
have to get along with a variety of people while I was performing the internship. I
needed to take others’ opinions into account and make sure that I considered them
when making a decision. Effective teamwork and collaboration not only helped me

with efficiently completing missions but also broaden my horizons to ideas or
solutions that I had never known.
Presentation
Presentation skill is one of the most crucial skills that I obtained a thorough in-
depth instruction and practice while I was studying at university. This skill turned
out to be very helpful during my internship as I could be confident to stand in front
of many people to present my ideas successfully. I personally think that it was a
result from practicing presentation hundreds of time and accumulating valuable
techniques at my university
Improving translation and interpretation
The most important skills that I have improved much are translation skill. When
working with the foreigners and do translation and interpreter, I leant a lot from
their culture, improve my English skills and their working style. They help me how
to translate well, as well as explaining me the complicated issues in translation. The
problem in interpreting also helps me know to make clear the ideas in
communication.
3.3. Impact of internship on future career
At the university in general, student internship usually takes place at the end of
year 3 or year 4. This is where students choose and find a place to practice, get
familiar with the real work environment. After a long period of study in the lecture
hall, If the student takes advantage of the internship period, there will be
opportunities for further development.
Through the activities of communication, behaviour, presentation or group work,
while practicing the workplace, students will gradually cultivate and train
themselves, improve their soft skills. There is no denying the results of learning,
soft skills will be equally important factors that help students have the opportunity
to work, develop later.
From the first year to the end of the third year of university, the majority of the time

spent studying in the lecture hall is the time students receive, study the specialized
field. Internship is a discipline (with certain credits) in the curriculum that students
must complete as a subject.
Practice time is the opportunity for the student to directly apply the knowledge
in the school to the working environment. An office environment will be very
different when sitting in the lecture hall to acquire knowledge. While in the position
of trainee, the student will have to complete the assigned work in accordance with
the competency and completion requirements as an employee.
Practice time at the office is also when students are introduced to the new
environment, new people and new jobs. Relationships are expanded, when self-
efficacy is expressed through good work and dedication will be rewarded.
Few students are retained at the company, becoming full-time employees after
the end of the internship. And when there is time for internships, the student, and
now the official staff, will develop more favourable, more promotion opportunities.
It can be said that the short-term practical training of the university is only a few
months, but it is important for both students to improve their skills and abilities but
also to open up their employment opportunities after graduation.
3.4. Suggestions
For Sao Nam Viet
The company should set up English clubs for all staffs to make sure that they
can improve their communication by English because they are not very good at
communication skill, especially English skills. Team members and upper
management should focus on improving their speaking skill because English is the
key language that they use at workplace every day.
Moreover, the staffs should be motivated and feel valued when they're given
positive reinforcement and shown how their work contributes to the success of NV
Star. This means offering employees specific feedback on how their work is feeding
into the broader business objectives.

For University
After experiencing an internship, I highly suggest main recommendations to
the university that the university should offer an internship class while students are
in learning process. The class is a great opportunity for these young men and
women to enhance their skills and talk about what they experienced so they all can
learn from what each individual is going through.
