Target Audience for DramaFilms:
 Drama is the broadest of movies genres and includes subgenres such as romantic drama, sport
films, period drama, courtroom drama and crime. Drama films usually appeal to both the young
mature and older audience, of both genders, due to the strong script that all drama films offer.
 Appeals to those who are interested in mystery and problem solving.
 Due to the broadness of drama films, the target audience may vary by sub-genre.
 Drama generally aims to tell an honest story of human struggles.
 Drama films usually try to appeal more to emotions.
 A lot of the time drama films are made to appeal directly to the female audience. However,
drama films that are targeted at a male audience are known as a "guy cry."
Target Audience for short films:
 The kind of people that go and see short films are typically not youraverage movie going
audience, they are more into the genre as an art piece than as a form of entertainment. They
are more interested in what a piece means and what it is trying to say
 The audience for short films is completely different tothat of the mainstream films. These
people could be described as;
• SUCCEEDERS: People, who like to think they are in control, are powerful, successful and ambitious.
This group of people is mainly driven by their income wanting to get high up in the industry. If they
have already made it successfully into a powerful position then they would be the audience that could
decide to invest in a new director etc. from viewing a short film and bring more money into their
company.
• ASPIRERS: People who strive for a bigger and better lifestyle. These could be the young people who
may have just finished a degree at university and are in search for a job wanting tobreak it into the
film industry. With the drive from theirmotivation of a better life they would do a lot of research into
the industry themselves, in turn viewing the short films to get a better understanding. This could
possibly be to get inspiration for theirown amateur film making and get recognised.
• INDIVIDUALISTS: People who are loners, individualists, independent thinkers who want tobe
separate from the crowd this sectorof the audience could include the people who like to express their
opinions and views through film. They are the opposite of the mainstreamers who may be the
audience for big budget full length blockbuster films.
Drama as a genre:
 Drama is a genre that relies heavily on the emotional
and relational development of realistic characters.
 Themes are often based on real life issues.
 Drama is a very broad genre and has many subgenres.
Subgenres –
* Melodramas *Docudrama
* Crime/legal drama *Psychodrama
* Historical drama *Period drama
Primary Target Audience:
 Young adults/teenagers,15+
 Predominantlyfemales
 Students/ Aspirers-People whostrive for a biggerand better lifestyle.These couldbe the young
people whomay have justfinisheda degree at universityand are in search for a job wanting to
break it into the filmindustry.Withthe drive from their motivationof a betterlife theywould do
a lotof research into the industry themselves,inturn viewingthe short filmsto get a better
understanding.This couldpossiblybe to get inspirationfor theirown amateur filmmaking and
get recognised.
 Possiblypeople whocan relate to the situations – having a lovedone pass away.
 Avid watchers of short films.
 People wholike to explore others storiesand situations.
 Those who understandthe circumstancesand aren'ttoo saddened/threatenedbyit.
Target Audience for
‘Tommy’
Secondary Target Audience:
 Middle aged/older
 Parents possibly
 Families
 Mixture of both male and female.
 Individualists- People whoare loners,individualists,independentthinkerswhowant to be
separate from the crowd. Thissector of the audience couldinclude the people wholike to express
theiropinionsand viewsthrough film.They are the opposite of the mainstreamerswho may be
the audience forbig budget full lengthblockbusterfilms.
 Succeeders- People,wholike tothink they are in control,are powerful,successful andambitious.
This group of people ismainly drivenby theirincome wantingto gethigh up in the industry.If they
have already made it successfullyintoa powerful positionthenthey wouldbe the audience that
could decide to investina new directoretc. from viewinga short filmand bring more moneyinto
theircompany.
The short filmindustry has its own target audience being somewhat a genre of its
own. Althougha lot of people may come across short films every nowand again there
is a niche audience of mostly filmmakers and fans of independent films that follow
the industry. Withthis inmind short films do not cover the majority of the population
and so my target audience has already beenreducedtoartsy types whoenjoy
independent productions. Aside fromthis generalization about the short film
industry, I would say that my target audience includes mature teenagers andadults.
