Impact of emerging paradigms and enablers
■ Control and data plane Separation
Software Defined Networks
o Control out of switches, routers and network nodes
Separation: control out of network nodes eases
management, network nodes dedicated to forwarding

Missing interfaces and data models
■ Slicing concept
■ Multi domain issues (even mono-domain...)
o For multi-domain and multi-operator orchestration, information on
resource and service capabilities should be exchanged
o Define common mechanisms/standardization: same semantics and
abstractions common information and data models and agreed
interfaces

8. Futur et Ruptures – 31 janvier 2019 Future Services Challenges -djamal.zeghlache@telecom-sudparis.eu8
Impact of emerging paradigms & enablers
■ Issues and challenges
o Separation/loose coupling essential but uncoordinated decomposition
leads to interoperability, interworking and integration issues
o Everything is a service: combined, composed, orchestrated and
deployed dynamically in place and time but this generates
overwhelming complexity.
Increasing role and use of open source
Providers’ interfaces not so open, combining and composing from
heterogeneous sources a real challenge
Multiple solutions available, no smooth integration, adaptation
often required, growing complexity
o Increasing sources of dynamic variations: dynamic infrastructure
configuration usage, social networks, services and functions are mobile,
dynamic placement, traffic as always, constant adaptation, dynamic
slice deployment as well…
9. Futur et Ruptures – 31 janvier 2019 Future Services Challenges -djamal.zeghlache@telecom-sudparis.eu9
Issues and possible remedies
■ Address interoperability and interworking via
semantically richer and more versatile interfaces
o Focus on services and interface properties, e.g. enrich
semantically “node type” and “data model” in orchestrators
(TOSCA) or simply push abstraction & intent based interactions
■ Introduce more intelligence in the infrastructures
o In-network AI
Multi-agent based cooperation for reconciliation of the
multi-layer or plane views
• Faced with multiple decision points and control loops not
necessarily working cohesively or even in conflict
• Stand alone versus integrated tests and evaluation
Reinforced learning of emerging behaviours

How about in network Learning and AI ?
■ Classical data-driven approach to identify best Artificial
Neural Network configuration that fits input-output data so
the ANN provides optimum output for unobserved data
■ Complement ANN with prior information from expert
knowledge (from simplified approximate models)

Potential Multi Agent Systems approaches
Explore use of cooperative multi-
agent systems for network services
■ Multi-agent system (used in
games)
o Centralised critic: stabilise learning
to coordinate agents
o Counterfactual baseline: multi-
agent assignment
o Efficient critic representation:
scales to some extent
■ Scale
o minimize interactions, control
state-space
o State explosion problem. State
space exponential with number of
actions in Reinforcement learning
systems
Problems can be addressed using
neural networks, reinforcement
learning and AI:
■ Network traffic classification via
neural networks
■ Intelligent networking
■ Intrusion detection
■ Anomaly detection, degradations
predictions, SLO /SLA violations
■ Network monitoring and data
analytics for network services
management
Overall cooperation & reconciliation
of agents operating at multiple
levels…
