According to a survey released by the
International Trade Union Congress,
which surveyed its members in 86
countries around the world to monitor
government and employer responses
to the pandemic., only 21% of
countries are providing sick leave for
all or some workers. The countries
polled represent a swathe of the
world's most powerful economies,
including 28 out of 36 OECD
countries and fifteen G20 countries.
Exceptional Challenges Facing the World's
Workers in Pandemic
According to the ITUC:
Provision of free health care - 50% of countries
Employment protection for those self-isolating - 34% of countries
Tax relief for businesses - 31% of countries

4. Generally all types of employees are at risk
because there is possibility of the attack of
COVID-19 to any employee. There are
certain employees who are at greater risk.
Health care employees who are at greater risk
include;
1. Doctors,
2. Nurses,
3. Medical technologists,

5. How Will COVID-19 Affect the World of Work?
ILO estimates indicate a rise in
global unemployment of
between 5.3 million (“low”
scenario) and 24.7 million
(“high” scenario) from a base
level of 188 million in 2019.
The “mid” scenario suggests
an increase of 13 million (7.4
million in high-income
countries). Though these
estimates remain highly
uncertain, all figures indicate a
substantial rise in global
unemployment. For
comparison, the global
financial crisis of 2008-9
increased unemployment by 22
million.
6. Importance of HRM The importance of
human resource management can be
discussed by Yodder, Heneman and others,
from three standpoints, viz., social,
professional and individual enterprise
1. Social Significance;
2. Professional Significance;
3. Significance for Individual Enterprise;
Any organization will have proper human
resource management (i) to improve the
capabilities of an individual; (ii) to develop
team spirit of an individual and the
department; and (Hi) to obtain necessaiy co -
operation from the employees to promote
organizational effectiveness.
Importance of HRM in the Current era
7. Recruitment and Selection is an
important operation in HRM, designed to
maximize employee strength in order to meet
the employer's strategic goals and objectives.
It is a process of sourcing, screening, short
listing and selecting the right candidates for
the required vacant positions.
HR managers ensure employees receive the
proper training to do their jobs well and
to develop new skills.
They develop onboarding programs that
familiarize new employees with workplace
policies and provide any
specific training needed for the role.
