Week 1: starting...
Nível 5 - FCE
If you’re taking this course, it means you’re preparing to take the FCE exam. As the
exam is divided in five parts, the course will follow the same division.
Besides studying for each of the papers (Reading, Writing, Use of English, Listening
and Speaking), you’ll also read 6 books.
In this first week, read the explanation about the exam. We really recommend you
read carefully, so that you can understand what the exam is all about.

Nível 5 - FCE
After this, let’s concentrate on Reading. First of all, take the diagnostic exam, called
Test Yourself. Your grade might not be as good as you’d like it to be, don’t worry. It’s
just a diagnostic exam. After studying the skill for a few weeks, you’ll take another
exam and this time, your grade will be higher.
So, after this exam, read the explanation for Part 1 and take the 4 activities that follow.
Also read the explanation for Part 2 and take only the first activity.

Week 2: starting...
Nível 5 - FCE
Let’s divide the week in six parts – I mean, six days. Take the last day to relax.
Reading / Part 2 / Activity 2. In this activity, the focus is to follow a longer text and
demonstrate understanding of textual unit through context. Read the sentences of a
text and put them in order. It is useful to find sequencing words in the text.
Reading / Part 2 / Activity 3. The focus is to improve comprehension skills. You’ll see
an article in which eight sentences have been removed. Choose the sentence (in the
right column) which best fits each gap. Reference words can help you, such as: he,
them, it, …

Nível 5 - FCE
Reading / Part 3 / Explanation. Read the explanation, as well as the two activities
given to show examples. This time, you’ll read texts in order to get detail, attitude or
opinion.
Reading / Part 3 / Activity 1. This activity asks you to skim and scan a text. Skimming
gives us a general idea of what the text is about. Scanning is when we search a text to
find more specific information – usually key details like dates, names, places, etc.
Reading / Part 3 / Activity 2. You’ll see, in the activity, words that you might not know,
but will understand through the context. As you read a text, you may find unfamiliar
words and phrases – or words that are used in a different way to what you expect. If
you always refer to a dictionary for the meaning, your reading speed will slow down.
Instead, you may be able to guess the meaning using context.

Nível 5 - FCE
Reading / Part 3 / Activity 3. In this third activity, you’ll read about different festivals
in China. Your job is to match each of the 15 definitions to one of the 4 festivals.
Surely, you’ll have to use the same festival more than once.
Reading / Test Yourself Again. After having studied the reading skill, you’ll take a new
exam on it. Compare your grade in this exam to the grade you previously got.
Practice Test 1 / Paper 1 – Reading. Now, this is semi official. Concentrate and take the
test. Control the time you need to take it.
Writing – Test Yourself. Take this pre-test but don’t be so hard on yourself.

Nível 5 - FCE
Writing / Part 1 / Explanation. Read the explanation as well as the exercises used to give
examples. You’ll learn how to write a letter or
email between 120-150 words. In this letter or email, you’ll need to use vocabulary to show
enthusiasm, request, give information, apologize, thank, suggest and show preference.
Para-life Rescue! / pages 4-19. The book talks about a new way of saving, or rescuing
people from drowning in the ocean. Read from page 4 to page 9 to discover how it works.
The book also talks about the city of Rio de Janeiro. Do you live in Rio? Or, have you ever
visited Rio?
Look at these sentences about the FCE – Paper 1 – Reading – Part 3 and have a nice week:
This part consists of four shorter texts where you have to match statements to the text
concerned. This most practises the reading skill of scanning information, although the
questions themselves often rely on paraphrasing the relevant part of the text in the
question.

Good to see you here. Below, is the study plan for this week:
Writing / Part 1 / Activity 1. You’ll learn how to create, develop and organise ideas on
a topic, with emphasis on transactional letters. The exercise will ask you to put parts of
a letter in order.
Writing / Part 1 / Activity 2. You’ll learn how to define words in context and recognise
differences between synonyms. The exercise will ask you to fill in the blanks with the
correct word or words.
Writing / Part 1 / Activity 3. The focus is to learn the ability to follow written prompts
and arrange them in an appropriate structure. You’ll be asked to put parts of a letter in
order.
Writing / Part 1 / Activity 4. You’ll develop the ability to write for a specific purpose
and audience, using an appropriate register. In order to practice it, you’ll be asked to
read some sentences and decide if they are written in a formal or informal register.

Writing / Part 1 / Activity 5. Learn how to respond to a letter or email using given
notes. Read a prompt and some sample notes in order to write a response.
Writing / Part 2 / Explanation. In the second part of the writing exam you’ll be able to
choose between writing an article, an essay, a letter, a report or a review between
120-180 words. Read the explanation as well as the three examples given.
Writing / Part 2 / Activity 1. Learn how to write for a specific purpose, using an
appropriate format. In order to get this, you’ll read short texts and choose the correct
category of them.
Writing / Part 2 / Activity 2. The focus is to teach you how to demonstrate the use of
a good range of structures and ability to use extended vocabulary. Practice matching
antonyms to a text.

Nível 5 - FCE
Writing / Part 2 / Activity 3. You’ll learn how to develop strategies for recognising the
purpose of words in context. You’ll label the correct sections of a newspaper according
to the definition.
Para-life Rescue! / pages 22-23. You’ll read a 390-word text by Peter Stevenson who
talks about his experience at a beach in San Diego, California. How long does it take
you to read the entire text?
Look at these sentences about the FCE – Paper 2 – Writing – Part 1 test and have a
nice week: Part 1 is a compulsory letter or email. This is based around a task such as
responding to another piece of writing (like a letter, email, advertisement, etc.) Here
you have to write a reply carefully, taking into account the notes and annotations
that accompany the text. There is a word limit of 120.150 words for this.

Writing / Part 2 / Activity 4. You’ll learn how to write a response to a text.
Writing / Test Yourself Again. Take this chance to improve your grade.
Practice Test 1 – Paper 2 – Writing. As a non-official exam, you’ll need to be
concentrated and control the time it takes you to do the task. Good luck 
Use of English / Test Yourself. Start the day checking how much you know, but don’t
worry: you’ll still study how to deal well with this skill.

Use of English / Part 1 / Explanation. In this part of the exam you’ll find a multiple-
choice cloze with twelve gaps. Mastering vocabulary skills, grammatical skills,
understanding of collocations and set phrases will be of crucial importance. Read the
complete explanation and the three examples that follow.
Use of English / Part 1 / Activity 1. The focus is to help you improve your vocabulary
range. The exercise will ask you to fill in the blanks with the correct adjective.
Use of English / Part 1 / Activity 2. Here you’ll learn how to use collocations – how
likely it is that two words will occur next to each other, or very near each other. In
order to practice this, you’ll choose the word that best completes a sentence. That is,
you’ll have to choose the word that collocates well in a sentence.
Use of English / Part 1 / Activity 3. This activity is similar to the one you did yesterday,
but this time you’ll focus on phrasal verbs.

Use of English / Part 1 / Activity 4. You’ll learn how to answer factual and negative
factual questions about reading passages. To help you accomplish this goal, you’ll read
an article and choose the best answer.
Para-life Rescue! / video + quiz. After reading this book about the exciting activity of

your understanding.

Nível 5 - FCE
Use of English / Part 2 / Explanation. Now you’ll deal with a text with twelve gaps.
Each of them represents a missing word or phrase which is not provided. To fill in the
gaps you ought to understand the structure of the language and the text itself.
Use of English / Part 2 / Activity 1. You’ll see seven sentences containing an adjective
of personality in each. As the sentences are divided, pay attention to the words in bold
(the adjectives) as well as to the transition words to find the correct ending to each of
the beginnings.
Use of English / Part 2 / Activity 2. A text with eight gaps will be used to test your
ability of building a good grammatical understanding of prepositions and verb form.

Use of English / Part 2 / Activity 3. How good are you at phrasal verbs? Use the
correct particle to complete the sentences in this activity. Remember: more important
than filling in the blanks is using phrasal verbs naturally when using the English
language. How many of these phrasal verbs can you use?
Use of English / Part 2 / Activity 4. This last activity gives you the opportunity to use,
in a text, what you have learned.
Use of English / Part 3 / Explanation. To master the activity that follows you’ll need to
show good vocabulary skills, and understanding of the text as a whole. You’ll deal with
a text containing ten gaps. At the end of each line you’ll see a ‘stem word’. Add a prefix
or a suffix to this stem word, or change it into a compound word to fill in the gap
correctly.
Use of English / Part 3 / Activity 1a. This activity deals exclusively with prefixes. Drag
the correct prefix to the word and you’ll see how you can improve your vocabulary.

Use of English / Part 3 / Activity 1b. This activity follows the same procedure as the
previous one. However, this time you’ll deal with suffixes.
Use of English / Part 3 / Activity 2. As you have already dealt with prefixes and
suffixes, now your task is to choose the correct word to complete the sentences.
Use of English / Part 3 / Activity 3. You’ll have fifteen sentences to show your spelling
abilities in context. In case the underlined word is incorrect, correctly type it and test
your ability.
Use of English / Part 3 / Activity 4. In this last activity you’ll see a text with ten gaps.
For each gap, there’s a stem word. Modify this stem word by adding a prefix or a suffix
to it or by changing it into a compound word and finally type this new word in the
correct space. Remember to check the spelling.

Tornado Chase / pages 2-3. Tornadoes are large storms that can cause huge amounts
of damage and destruction. Most people run from tornadoes, but some researchers
chase them! They want to study the storms to develop better methods for predicting
them. How do they find these tornadoes? How do they collect their information?
Look at these sentences about the FCE – Paper 3 – Use of English – Part 3: In this part
of the Use of English test, you transform a word to fit the context within a sentence.
You must change the part of speech of the word in capitals.
Read the text without concentrating on the gaps and make sure you understand the
story;
Identify the parts of speech of each word in capitals;
Decide into which part of speech you need to transform the word in capitals;
Finally, build the necessary word.

Week 6: starting...
Nível 5 - FCE
Use of English / Part 4 / Explanation. In this part of the Use of English test, you have
to rephrase sentences using a key word for each sentence. You can only use between
two to five words, including the key word.
Use of English / Part 4 / Activity 1. You’ll have eight sentences to choose the word
that best completes them. The words have the same root, but different prefixes and
suffixes.
Use of English / Part 4 / Activity 2. The activity checks your ability of using plurals.
You’ll receive sixteen words to type their correspondent plural version.
Use of English / Part 4 / Activity 3. Still willing to check how well you can use words in
a context, the exercise will give you ten words so that each of them fills in a gap.

Nível 5 - FCE
Use of English / Part 4 / Activity 4. Now you’ll have to type the correct words in the
gap. There’s a sentence, then an isolated word. This isolated word is to be
complemented with other words to fill in the blank to complete the next sentence.
Use of English / Test Yourself Again. There are twenty-one sentences to test how well
your abilities have improved. Since typing the plural version of words given to
choosing the words that best complete the sentences.
Practice Test 1 / Paper 3 / Use of English. The first text contains twelve gaps. Each gap
must be filled with one of the options given. The next text asks you to fill in twelve
blanks with one word in each. The third text is to be filled with a transformation of the
respective stem word. Finally, you’ll have to rephrase eight sentences, using between
two and five words, including the key word.

Listening / Test Yourself. Take the pre-test to check how much you already know and
what you still need to improve.
Listening / Part 1 / Explanation. In this part of the test, you’ll listen to eight short
unconnected recordings. Each one is 30 seconds long. For each recording you answer
a question with three answers to choose from.
Listening / Part 1 / Activity 1. Take notes as you listen to the conversations. Then, use
these notes to answer the questions.
Tornado Chase / pages 4-27. A team of tornado chasers led by Tim Samaras are joined
by photographer Carsten Peter as they set out during storm season in the U.S. While
they have some thrilling moments, the preparation and waiting that goes into the
chase are sometimes frustrating. Their team is attempting to place a probe inside a
tornado to collect data that will help scientists build a better warning system, so
people can escape these dangerous storms.

You hear four different sets of recordings (monologues or interacting speakers).
Monologues could include answerphone messages, radio documentaries,

Listening / Part 1 / Activity 2.1. You’ll listen to conversations for general
understanding. First, listen to a story as you take notes. Then, use your notes as well as
what you remember from listening to check True or False for the five sentences that
follow.
Listening / Part 1 / Activity 2.2. This activity is similar to the one you have previously
done. Take the chance to practice as much as possible.
Listening / Part 1 / Activity 2.3. Here’s another chance to perfect your listening skills.
Listening / Part 1 / Activity 2.4. After a number of activities concentrated on the same
task, how well can you perform it now?

Nível 5 - FCE
Listening / Part 1 / Activity 3. In activity 3, you’ll listen to a conversation in order to
answer factual, negative factual and inference questions. Remember to take notes as
you listen. To answer factual questions, you have to identify what was said. On the
other hand, to answer negative factual questions, you have to know what was not
mentioned. Finally, the answer for inference questions is not explicitly said or
mentioned. After listening to the conversation, you’ll answer six multiple choice
questions.
Listening / Part 1 / Activity 4. This time, you’ll listen to people talking in eight different
situations in order to answer main-topic/main-purpose questions about
conversations.
Listening / Part 2 / Explanation. You’ll listen to a recording with the purpose of
completing a gapped text. The recording follows the same order of the text. Now,
instead of just checking if you can understand the main idea of what you hear, the
exercise aims to check if you can also understand details, specific words or phrases,
specific information and stated opinion.

Listening / Part 2 / Activity 1. As a starter, you need to show you are able to follow
and understand what the speaker is saying. You’ll listen to a conversation and then
answer some multiple choice questions.
Listening / Part 2 / Activity 2. Now, let’s improve your ability. This time, listen and
show that you can follow the order of what’s being said. You’ll listen to a story and
then put it in order.
Tornado Chase / pages 30-31. You’ll read a 349-word text explaining the experience of
catching a tornado.
Look at these sentences about the FCE – Paper 4 – Listening – Part 1 test and have a
nice week: You listen to eight short unconnected recordings. Each one is 30 seconds
long. For each recording you answer a question with three answers to choose from.

Nível 5 - FCE
Listening / Part 2 / Activity 3. You’ll listen to a conversation so that you can answer six
multiple choice questions.
Listening / Part 2 / Activity 4. This time, listen to part of a radio programme with an
activist in order to fill in the blanks of the text.
Listening / Part 3 / Explanation. In this part of the listening test, you listen to five
people talking about a similar topic. You have to decide who says what, by matching
each speaker to a prompt. Often the answer isn’t directly stated; instead you have to
arrive at the meaning by putting together different parts of what you’ve heard.
Listening / Part 3 / Activity 1. Listen to the recording and answer three multiple-
choice questions.

Listening / Part 3 / Activity 2. Now, show your ability to hear inference and make
deductions. Listen to the conversation between Maria and Sarah and answer the three
True / False questions. Do the same for the next conversation.
Listening / Part 3 / Activity 3. Listen to a conversation between two women and then
answer the multiple-choice questions. Do the same for the next conversation.
Listening / Part 3 / Activity 4. This time, you’ll listen to five people talking about a
similar experience. Then, match each speaker to what they say. There are six options,
so one of them is not used.
Listening / Part 4 / Explanation. In this part of the test you listen to a longer text with
more than one speaker. You have seven questions: each one has three options to
choose from.

Listening / Part 4 / Activity 1. You’ll practice to understand the gist of a conversation
and to summarize this conversation in your own words. So, take notes while you listen
because these notes will be useful to answer the six multiple-choice questions that

Listening / Part 4 / Activity 2. You’ll have the opportunity to
follow a conversation with different accents. To check how much you’ve understood,
decide if the statements that follow are true or false.
Listening / Part 4 / Activity 3. Listen to the conversation between a couple at a
restaurant talking about films. Then, answer the six multiple-choice questions.
Listening / Part 4 / Activity 4. This time, you listen to a radio programme discussion
about talent shows before choosing the correct answers for the seven multiple-choice
questions.

Listening / Test Yourself Again. After practicing as much as you could for a few weeks,
take the test again and observe how different your performance is.
Practice Test 1 / Paper 4 / Listening. Today go to FCE Practice Tests, choose Practice
Test 1 and take Paper 4. Separate this time to take the whole listening test, as if it was
the real one. Don’t let anything disturb or distract you.

Speaking / Part 1 / Explanation. Part 1 of the Speaking paper is a general interactional
and social language – a conversation between the interlocutor and each candidate.
You will answer questions on topics such as home, family, and personal interests. This
part of the test will last approximately three minutes.

Answer the question about you.
Speaking / Part 1 / Activity 2. You’ll answer the question about you using
social/interactional language.

The Gauchos of Argentina / pages 2-3. The gauchos of Argentina are proud to share a
heritage that goes back hundreds of years. They are all self-reliant cowboys who work
in the remote countryside and follow a specific code of ethics. Customs, such as the
clothes they wear and the way they celebrate, vary from place to place, but from
Corrientes to Patagonia to Salta, gauchos share the same fiercely independent spirit
and great love of the countryside.
Look at these sentences about the FCE – Paper 5 – Speaking – Part 1:
The Speaking paper is divided in four parts. You must answer all four parts. You take
the speaking test with another candidate. The interlocutor (examiner talking to you)
asks you questions and gives you prompts (pictures and words) which you may have
to talk about or discuss with the other person. You are assessed on your
performance throughout.

Nível 5 - FCE
Speaking / Part 1 / Activity 4. In this activity you’ll answer questions according to
examination format. You’ll talk about likes and dislikes, time, holidays and travel, and
media.
Speaking / Part 2 / Explanation. In this part of the exam you look at two photographs
and the interlocutor asks you to talk about them (describing, comparing and giving an
opinion). The other candidate listens and then has to respond at the end of your talk.
Each candidate’s turn should last approximately one minute, with a further 20 seconds
given for the other candidate to respond and comment on what you have said.
Speaking / Part 2 / Activity 1. Answer the question about you. To be better assessed,
look at the tips at Expanding Your Response.

Speaking / Part 2 / Activity 2. Here you’re supposed to compare and contrast two
images. When you compare images, you say what they have in common. Otherwise,
when you contrast them, you point out their differences.
Speaking / Part 2 / Activity 3. This activity gives you the opportunity to practice the
language of comparing.
Speaking / Part 2 / Activity 4. This time, you have to be able to expand the response
by yourself. The task also asks about your personal opinion.
Speaking / Part 3 / Explanation. In the third part of the speaking test, both candidates
are given spoken instructions with written and visual stimuli. You work together in a
collaborative task (exchanging ideas, expressing opinions, agreeing and/or disagreeing,
speculating, suggesting, evaluating, reaching a decision through negotiation). Your
discussion should last three minutes.

Speaking / Part 3 / Activity 1. The activity will teach you how to discuss and negotiate.
This time, you will learn how to disagree with someone.
Speaking / Part 3 / Activity 2. Now, you will learn how to speculate. View the picture
and record your answer based on speculations. Use the Expanding Your Response box
to better perform your answer.
The Gauchos of Argentina / pages 4-27. In Argentina, there is a group of men who live
a unique life: the life of a gaucho. This special type of cowboy has been continuing the
old traditions for centuries. What type of lifestyle do these men have and what does it
mean to be a gaucho?
Look at these sentences about the FCE – Paper 5 – Speaking – Part 1 test and have a
nice week: In this part of the speaking test, you will be asked questions about: likes
and dislikes, places, personal experience, media, work and learning, relationships.

Speaking / Part 3 / Activity 3. In this activity you’ll see pictures showing ways to go to
work or class. Record your opinion about the best way.
Speaking / Video 1. You’ll watch four video segments, each related to a part of the
speaking test. Watch the videos carefully and observe how well the candidates go. In
your opinion, what could have been done in order to get a better grade?
Speaking / Part 3 / Activity 4. This time you’ll be asked to talk about the type of film
which appeals to you most.

Speaking / Part 4 / Explanation. Part 4 of the speaking test is a discussion on topics
related to the collaborative task. The interlocutor now joins in the discussion (from
Part 3) and asks further questions to each candidate so it is a three-way conversation
lasting four minutes. The focus here is expressing and justifying opinions, and agreeing
and/or disagreeing.
Speaking / Part 4 / Activity 1. Learn the ability to negotiate and discuss using
conversational tools. When talking about how to choose a place to live, remember to
state if you prefer to live close to work or maybe close to your family or friends. Also,
remember to say if you don’t mind spending a long time in your car and if you prefer
living in the city or in the country. Justify what you say.
Speaking / Part 4 / Activity 2. This time, order the conversation between Dave and
April.

Speaking / Part 4 / Activity 3. Record your answer talking about
the reasons why you want to learn English and the most important reasons behind
studying FCE.
Speaking / Part 4 / Activity 4. Still talking about movies, look at the pictures and
record your answer saying if you’d like to watch something different from what is
suggested and what it would be. Remember to justify your answer.

organize your routine so that you take them as if they were the real one. For the
reading Part you might need one hour. This paper is divided in three parts and you
must answer all the parts. There are thirty questions in total. You receive two marks
for each correct answer in Parts 1and 2, and one mark for each correct answer in Part
3.
Practice Test 2 / Paper 1 / Writing. This paper is divided in two parts and you can use
1 hour and 20 minutes for them. You must answer both parts with two questions to
answer in total. You receive equal marks for each question.
Practice Test 2 / Paper 1 / Use of English. The four parts of this paper take 45 minutes.
You must answer all four parts, containing 42 questions in total. You receive one mark
for each correct answer in Parts 1, 2, and 3, and two marks for each correct answer in
Part 4.

Nível 5 - FCE
Practice Test 2 / Paper 1 / Listening. This Paper is divided in 4 parts taking
approximately 40 minutes. You must answer all four parts. You receive one mark for
each correct answer in four parts.
Practice Test 2 / Paper 1 / Speaking. This Paper takes around 14 minutes and is
divided in four parts. You must answer all four parts and you are assessed on your
performance throughout.
Saving the Amazon Together / video + quiz. Watch the entire video and take short
notes about the different people you see. What are they? What are they doing?
