Building VocabularyBuilding Vocabulary
• An elephant seal shares South Georgian Island with a huge of
King Penguins. The penguins have come to the island to reproduce, but
space can be a problem. Each penguin must defend its , a
small area less than three feet (one meter) across.
• Although adult King Penguins around 30 pounds (14 kilograms),
they cannot always their chicks against such as this
skua. In this ocean, seals and other sea animals sometimes eat
penguins.
• Cold temperature also challenge penguin . This
penguin keeps its egg warm until its returns. Adults may swim
and eat for two weeks or more before they return and take over the
care of the eggs.
• Climate change is creating another . Penguin chicks are not
independent. They on their parents for food. Warmer ocean
water means less food nearby, so penguin parents are away for longer
time periods and more chicks die.
