 Animals were observed and assigned to
supernatural statuses fitting their nature
 Dogs: Because of their ability to find dead things,
then consume them, they were able to sense
ghosts; they became the guardians between the
world of the living and the dead
 Cats: Egypt associated them with healing, thus
sorcery; they have dual personalities so can be
dangerous (used in spells to curse others); Nordic:
Freyja (health, love, healing) had a chariot drawn
by cats; eventually became associated with the
demonic by medieval Christianity
 Rodents: West: Associated with plague (Apollo,
god of plague, mice), Black Death
East: Intelligence, movement (Ganesh’s vehicle),
food bringer (China and Japan).
 Cat.
 Black cat: Europe, good luck. America, bad luck. Killing a cat means
to bring disaster. If a cat left the home, disaster is about to strike.
 Dog.
 OK, unless howling at the moon as you go by.
 Hare.
 Bad luck if one crosses your path.
 Hedgehog.
 Good fortune, especially if you meet one going in the opposite
direction.
 Horse.
 Piebald is a good omen. But if you see its tail first, then bad luck will
befall a friend.
 Mouse or Rat:
 A white or brown mouse is good luck, especially in love. Grey mouse =
bad luck.White rat is good luck, black rat is bad luck.
 Animals can sense things beyond the norm
with enhanced senses, instinctually-driven
mind; humans can, too, but we are taught to
disregard it
 Animals as intelligent and self-aware
 Animals as observant
 Animals as having superior senses
 Animals as enigmas
 Animals as misread/folklore/misinformation
 Watching something in a room that cannot be
perceived
 Running from/avoiding areas
 Wanting out of a structure/area
 Acting as if interacting with someone
 Acting out before/with a supernatural phenomenon
 *Unusual behavior is subjective to human observation
▪ *Assumes no health issues with the pets
▪ *Assumes natural causes have been ruled out within reasons
 Animals are self-aware and thus able to have a
consciousness beyond death
 Animals reincarnate (soul/mind)
 Hinduism, Buddhism
 Animals have souls
 Nature/animism: Tribal religions -- mystical and divine
 Shared souls: Judaism
 Humans project the animal ghosts
 Freud/grief
 Most ghosts are pets, not food animals and rarely wild animals
 Dogs = up to one year after death
 Cats = up to 6 months after death
