A verb is an action or doing word.
E.g. Ganiat eats Plantain
Conjugation refers to the breaking down of verbs to suit the different personal pronouns e.g. Je
mange du riz (I am eating Rice/I eat rice), Tu manges du riz (You are eating rice/ You eat rice). Note
that an S is added to Mange in the 2nd example but it is not pronounced;
French verbs are categorized into 3 different groups according to their endings;
ER verbs – MangER, ParlER, MontER etc
IR Verbs – FinIR, SortIR, PartIR etc
RE Verbs – VendRE, PrendRE, SuivRE etc

Although there are regular and irregular verbs but for the purpose of this lesson, we shall be focusing
on the Regular ER verbs in the Present tense (Present l’indicatif);
To conjugate ER verbs in the present tense, we need to follow the pattern below using PARLER (To
SPEAK) as a case study

Write down horizontally all the 7 major personal pronouns;
a. Je (I)
b. Tu (You;singular/friendly form)
c. Il (He)
d. Elle (She)
e. Nous (We)
f. Vous (You; plural/ polite form)
g. Ils (They; All masculine or a mixture of both genders)
h. Elles (They/ All feminine)

Add the Infinitive form of the verb to the personal pronouns listed and strike out the ER endings

Il Parler
Elle Parler

Vous Parler
Ils Parler
Elles Parler
Now what you have is "parl" after each pronoun;

Then add the endings or "terminaisons" -e, -es, -e, -ons, -ez and -ent to the verb of each pronoun
respectively as written out.
Je Parle (I speak/ I am speaking)
Tu Parles (You speak/You are speaking)
Il Parle (He speaks/He is speaking)
Elle Parle (She speaks/She is speaking)
Nous Parlons (We speak/We are speaking)
Vous Parlez (You speak/You are speaking)
Ils Parlent (They speak/They are speaking)
Elles Parlent (They speak/They are speaking)
NB: These endings should never be mixed up as the sentence would end up being grammatically
incorrect.

Simple isn’t it? Now all you need to do is to add any vocabulary of choice to it e.g. Français (French).

Elle Parle Français (She speaks French/ She is speaking French)
