4. LES PAYS ET NATIONALITES
COUNTRIES AND NATIONALITIES
It is very important not to forget that French Nouns are gender sensitive, as
such:
Some of countries are masculine and others feminine
Those that start with “le” are masculine and those that start with “la” are feminine
“L” is used when the country or noun begins with a vowel
Below are the French vocabularies for countries and Nationalities:

NB : I am Canadian is usually translated into French as « Je suis
Canadien/Canadienne ». The A is usually omitted.

9. LES PAYS ET NATIONALITES
COUNTRIES AND NATIONALITIES
In French, we don’t use « j’habite à » with countries. This is because as seen in the
examples above, masculine countries take “au” and feminine countries take “en” and
not “à” like towns do;
Also, note that the words “français” and “française” in number the third
example didn't start with capital letters because unlike in English, when talking about
your nationality or another person’s, you use a lower case letter;
If you want to talk about another person’s nationality you say:
James est anglais……….James is English.
Vivian est indienne……..Vivian is Indian
NB : Est……is
