ADVERBS OF MANNER
Use
A tortoise is slow. (An adjective describes a noun).
A tortoise walks slowly. (An adverb of manner describes a verb)


We use adverbs of manner to describe adjectives, how something happens.
Ex.:
He’s walking slowly.
She’s speaking quietly.
They are playing well.
Form
We form most adverbs by adding –ly to the adjective.

Position

The adjectives go before of the noun.
Ex.: A big lion. / Big lions.

Generally, the adjectives go after the verb “to be”.
Ex.: The boy is tall.
Order

Adjectives of opinion come before adjectives that are considered facts.
Ex.: A beautiful, tall girl.








VERBS OF SENSE
Ex.: feel, hear, taste, smell, and see.
Adjectives describe nouns. Ex.: A big elephant.
Adverbs of Manner describe verbs. Ex.: I play the piano badly.

To describe “verbs of sense” we use adjectives when they are not related
with actions but with a state.
The soup smells horrible. (Smells = verb of sense, horrible = adjective).
The dog was smelling the boy excitedly. (Smelling =
verb of action, excitedly = adverb).

PRESENT SIMPLE PASSIVE
Use
We can use the passive when we do not know or when it is not important who or
what does or did something.
Ex.:
People drink coffee in Brazil. (Active voice)
Coffee is drunk in Brazil (by people). (Passive voice).
Form

The object of the active voice becomes the
subject of the passive voice.

IS/ ARE + PAST PARTICIPLE

We can use by to say who or what does
something.
Ex.: Santa Claus brings presents. (Active voice).
Presents are brought by Santa Claus (Passive voice).
