2. Brief Introduction
A parent is the first teacher to their child since day one and remain as the best teacher
throughout their life not just as first teacher but a lot of first in guiding and helping their kids. As
a coach and a teacher, the parent knows an age-appropriate challenges and learnings to encourage
development, as well as to experiences that allow their child to explore on their own and learn to
interact with their environment. The assistance from parents that promotes inspiration, support,
and access to the different developmental challenges that enables the child to achieve their goals
and master the developmental tasks (Child Development Institute, LLC).
In this pandemic series that affects our education system here in the Philippines and all-
over the world, it gives ways to the home instructions to take part to the teaching-learning process.
Home learning instructions is an activity that allows learners to finish the task outside schools
specifically at their homes with the guidance and help virtually by their teachers and physically by
their parents. Moreover, the coronavirus outbreak has changed many things about our daily lives.
But even during this uncertain time, it’s a sure thing that our children are still learning, growing,
and developing. (Center on the Developing Child).
The Department of Education, with their learning continuity plan in this school year
provide opportunities for both parents and learners to bond together and let the teachers and
researchers to study the effects of this home instructions in the learning process of the learners.
With this, home learning and parental involvement will have an impact in the learning process of
the learners.
Background of the study/Rationale
The Covid-19 pandemic hits the world and Philippines is one of the countries affected by
this virus. This pandemic has affected thousands of peoples, who are either sick or are being killed
3. due to the spread of this disease. The impact of this pandemic affects the economic status, health,
social and even the education of the children here in the Philippines is disrupted.
Adopting the Basic Education Learning Continuity Plan was regulated by the Department
of Education (DO_012, s. 2020) for this school year 2020-2021 as the response of the department
during this pandemic. The implementation of this plan becomes the way for home learning process
and parental involvement in the learning process of the students at home.
Abovementioned studies have shown that parent involvement helped the development of
numeracy and literacy skills of learners in the school setting ( Christina Lindahl et al, 2016; Mary
Beth Boyle et al, 2014; Dulay, K. M., Cheung, S. K., Reyes, P., & McBride, C., 2018; Millicent
D. Lore et al, 2016). However, in this time the homebased setting of teaching-learning process
will be the focus in our education system in the Philippines.
Statement of the problem
This study aims to determine the the effects of modular distance learning instructions in
numeracy and literacy skills of grade 1 pupils.
Specifically, this study will seek answers to the following questions:
1. How does the modular distance learning instructions in numeracy and literacy skills of
grade 1 pupils in terms of:
1.1 Numeracy Skills
1.2 Literacy Skills
2. Do the modular distance learning instructions exert significant effect on the numeracy
performance of grade 1 pupils?
4. 3. Do the modular distance learning instructions exert significant effect on the literacy
performance of grade 1 pupils?
4. Do the educational background of the parents exert significant effects of modular distance
learning instructions in numeracy and literacy skills of grade 1 pupils? What pedagogical
implications may be drawn from the findings of the study?
Theoretical/ Conceptual Framework
This study includes the review of related literature in exploring the effects of modular
distance learning instructions in numeracy and literacy skills of grade 1 pupils.
Parents involvement in modular distance learning is linked to the academic skills
of their child as cited by Catherine Snow (2020) stated that parental involvement in home-based
learning helped enhance the academic skills of the child. While, in the study conducted by Alison
Y. Boak, Kenneth W. Griffin, Carol Ripple, and Lenore Peay (2019) stated that the parent-child
relationship and home learning were associated with the improvements in school readiness of
learners. Hence, it is also stated that parents increase their understanding of ability to facilitate the
child’s learning.
Significance of the study
The findings may provide information beneficial to the following individuals:
School Principal- This may inspire them to integrate school project that strengthen the
parental involvement not only at school but also at home learning and instructions of their
children’s education.
Teachers- The results of the study may realize them that the effects of modular distance
learning instructions in numeracy and literacy skills may vary in each grade one pupils. It may
5. give way on them to utilize some techniques and strategies that may help the parents and learners
in developing numeracy and literacy skills at home.
Parents- The findings of the study may inform them of the different effects of modular
distance learning instructions in the development of the numeracy and literacy skills of grade one
pupils. It may give light on the significant effect on how important the assistance from parents at
home on the performance of learners during this time is.
Pupils- The result may help them to achieve positive effects of modular distance learning
instructions in the development of their numeracy and literacy skills.
Future Researcher- this may inspire them that the effects of parent-assisted home
instructions in the numeracy and literacy skills may vary in each grade one pupils. It may give way
on them to study more on this topic.
Scope and limitation
The study focuses on Effects of Modular Distance Learning Instructions in Numeracy and
Literacy Skills of Grade 1 Pupils. Numeracy and Literacy skills of learners will be determined in
terms of Modular Distance Learning Instructions.
The result of this study will be applicable only to the respondents of this study and will not
be measure the effects of modular distance learning instructions in numeracy and literacy skills of
grade 1 pupils who do not belong to the population of this study.
ResearchDesign
This study will be used descriptive methods of research and qualitative method of research
to determine the effects of modular distance learning instructions in numeracy and literacy skills
of grade 1 pupils.
6. It relies on the collection and analysis of numerical data to describe, predict, or control
variables and phenomenon of interest (Gay, Mills &Airasian,2009). The purpose of descriptive
research is to describe, and interpret the status of the individuals, settings, conditions, or events
(Mertler,2014). This method is used to discover facts on which professional judgment could be
based. It involves the description, recording analysis and interpretations of data have gathered.
Qualitative method of research involves collecting and analyzing non-numerical data like
text and audio-video recordings to understand concepts, opinions, and experiences (Pritha
Bhandari, 2020).
ResearchLocale
The study will be conducted to Grade 1 learners at Gaya-Gaya Elementary School. It is
under DepEd City of San Jose del Monte, Bulacan, which is also known as the rising city of
Bulacan. The ease of accessibility and responsiveness of the respondents brought the researcher
to choose the place under study.
.
Population and sampling
The respondents are the students enrolled in Grade 1 at Gaya-Gaya Elementary School
including their parents. Through random sampling the researcher found out that in every section
there is a distribution of respondents. From G1 - Sampaguita (10), G1 - Camia (10), G1 – Ilang –
ilang (10), G1 - Santan (10), and G1 – Rosal (10). For the total of 50 respondents. These 45
7. respondents will be answering the questionnaire and 5 respondents will be answered the interview
guide.
Table 1 shows the distribution of respondents in each corresponding sections.
ResearchInstrument
This study uses questionnaires to gather the data that are needed to this study. In addition,
the researcher also provides interview guide and observation sheet to support further this study.
The researcher will wait for the confirmation from the owner of the questionnaire to be used and
modify in this study. However, if there is no confirmation the researcher will proceed to the
researcher made questionnaire or instrument.
Data Processing Methods
The questionnaire and interview and the use of extant information sources will be the mode
of data gathering. Each of the respondents will be given sets of questions. In gathering data, the
researcher will carry out the following procedure:
A letter will be sent to the school head of Gaya-Gaya Elementary School to ask permission
in the conduct of the proposed study.
A letter will be also sent to the parents of grade 1 pupils of Gaya-Gaya Elementary School
to be part of the respondents in the conduct of the proposed study.

personally.
The researcher will collect the questionnaires personally from the respondents and will
check if all items were answered.
