Main focus areas of NGO are:
• Creating innovative models of schooling
• Training of teachers
• Development of textbooks and curriculum material
• Community mobilization and advocacy
• Academic support
• Monitoring and research
• Initiating, supporting and implementing a variety of services
for special needs children
• Promotion of integrated as well as inclusive education
• Services, projects and programmes to ensure full
development of pupils with disabilities

• NGOs are autonomous governing board and their
development activities are meant for the target
group.
• NGOs development programs tend to be effective in
reaching poor and poverty alleviation.
• NGOs have potential to play an important role in
influencing the state policies by advocacy and
lobbying through their networks.
6. • NGO tend to be more action oriented because they
represent local interest.
• NGO exhibit a high degree of flexibility in their
functioning, methods and practices because they
tend to local and small.
• NGOs development programmes tend to be
innovative and emphasize on participatory approach.
• NGOs development work tend to be focused as it is
their principal goal.
7. Functions of NGOs
NGOs stand as a link between Government and
the society. They work for the improvement of
Secondary Education and welfare of youth. Their
contribution towards spreading and enrichment
of Secondary Education a lot.
NGO have following functions:
• Every year some NGOs send secondary teachers
where there is a shortage of teachers.
• NGOs assist for conducting experimental
innovative programs like AIDS education.
8. • NGOs advise educational institutions to offer
desirable facilities in which they are lacking.
• NGOs encourage girls to pursue their education for
eg.CYS,NIRANTAAR etc.
• NGOs conduct innovative programmes in the field
of vocational education in Secondary Schools.They
provide training of Vocational teachers or resource
persons.
• Some schools are set up by the NGOs to Cater the
needs of highly neglected tribal and difficult areas
where there is no provision for schooling.
• They have developed schools and hostels to spread
education where there is no facility or lack of
facilities.
9. • NGOs provide scholarships for SC, ST minorities
and other weaker sections.
• NGOs are running District Resource Units for
providing support to the non formal education
programmes in collaboration with NIOS. They
motivate dropouts by personal contact to continue
education and counsel them to take up through
alternative schooling. NGOs arrange teachers who
are willing to work as a teacher in study centres
and send them to NIOS.
• NGOs started Hindi organisation for promotion of
Hindi at all the stages[ Prathamik to Ratna] .Some
NGOs work for English as well as tribal languages.
10. • NGOs are also involved in teacher education programs.
NGO like Sandhan, Lok Jumbish (Rajasthan ),Eklavya(
Bhopal ),J Krishnamurti Foundation (Varanasi )impart in-
service education. Each agency operates with it’s own
objectives, available resources and specific models.
• Some NGOs work to foster reading habits among children
particularly those who are financially less fortunate
example Hippocampus Foundation.
• NGOs receive funds from the government and from
different trusts and foundations for different projects.
NGOs must be regarded as an integral part of the fabric
of national education system. They play a very important
role in human education also.

Civil society means Non governmental private
voluntary organised association or institutions
of people through which they try to secure
their need, desires and objectives.
• In other words for Non governmental
organisations and Groups working for securing
public interest and welfare by their self
support for example Press, Human Rights
groups and organisation etc.

• Civil society is especially concerned with
democracy and local governance reforms in
education.
• It focuses on accountability and Service
Delivery purpose at the local level.
• Mechanism of local level participation.

Civil society place a very important role in
educational development.
• Civil society works as an instrument for securing
rights and interest of people.
• Civil Society Act as a link between community and
government, it creates the new innovative
relationships between them.
• Strategies of civil society includes collaboration with
government in designing, implementing and
monitoring educational programmes.

• It can give valuable support of international
organisations in the field of education and
human security.

empowerment of the people in terms of

• Advocacy groups advocates across India for
democratic child centred education.
• They contribute significant consultations on
educational policies previously and they are
doing so continuously.
• Advocacy groups provide legal support and
guidance to parents of children with special
educational needs.
• Advocacy and support services exist within the
community to provide family, parents, carers and
siblings with resources to support them in their
role.

national level to recognise the child’s need to
be prepared for the world of work which
includes creative thinking, critical ability of
thinking, communication skills, collaborating
functioning, independent and social
accountability etc.

• This group work on a wide range of child
related issues like Child Protection, child
development and nutrition, water. sanitation
and hygiene, communication and health of
the school children.
• They arrange or support the programmes to
build life skills, vocational awareness, Self -
defence,physical fitness and sports for girls.
23. • They advocate for a specific government
directive to facilitate effective interventions for
students of the secondary grades.
• They advocate policy reforms to increase child
participation.
• They take initiation for arranging workshops on
adolescent education in collaboration with the
local governance and the school.
• They advocate use of ICT in teacher education
which lead to interactive classrooms.
• They advocate for subject specific forum of
teachers so that they can enrich their pedagogical
content and methodology in teaching processes
24. • They provide valuable insight on perspective building
about the issues and concerns of adolescent that make
them vulnerable and what is required to prepare them
for life so that the government can make policies by
keeping in mind these issues.
• They promotes researches related to critical issues
such as student retention, student motivation, special
need programmes, student learning and others so that
the policies can be made to give quality education and
best practices will be adopted for their
implementation.
• They see the things from the students perspective and
stand up for students’ rights and concerns.
