2. The Solar System
o The Solar System is made up of eight interesting
planets in our galaxy.
o The planets orbit around the Sun. The Sun has its
gravitational pull.
o The Solar System also contains other space objects,
such as satellites, asteroids, comets, and much more.
oOur Sun is a medium-sized star that has six layers

3. Mercury
oMercury is the very first planet to the Sun
oIt is an inner rocky planet that has no
atmosphere
oBecause it has no atmosphere, it is not
the hottest planet.

4. Venus
oVenus is the 2nd planet in the Solar System
oThis is actually the hottest planet

5. Earth
oEarth is the 3rd planet
oIt is by far the only planet that supports life
oSome scientists believe that Luna (the Earth’s moon)
was a piece of Earth
oThere are about eight layers of its atmosphere
oIt rotates faster when it’s near the Sun

6. Mars
oThe last of the inner planets
oIt is also known as the Red Planet and has huge
canyons
oMany believe/believed that there is life on Mars
oIt has two moons; Phobos and Deimos
oIt has lost its magnetic field
oThis planet has high levels of carbon dioxide!

7. Asteroid Belt
oThe Asteroid Belt separates the inner planets and the
outer planets
oAsteroids are made of rock-like material that are
pulled in due to the Sun’s gravitational pull

8. Jupiter
oJupiter is the 5th planet and the 1st of the outer
planets
oIt has 63 moons. It has the most moons
oIt rotates very fast
oIt is 71% of all planetary mass in the Solar System
oIt has very unique wind patterns

9. Saturn
oSaturn is the 6th planet from the Sun and has a
huge magnetic field
oIt is the 2nd planet with the most moons
oIt has a strange bulge in the middle and flattened
poles
oThis planet consists of a liquid metallic hydrogen
core

10. Uranus
Don’t laugh
oNow we have Uranus, the 7th planet
oThis planet has 13 rings; two in which are very far
oIt is the third largest in diameter
oIt takes 84 Earth years to revolve around the Sun
o Some scientist believe that Uranus used to rotate
horizontally, but perhaps an asteroid hit it, causing
it to tilt

11. Neptune
oFinally, we have Neptune
oIt has very fast and strong winds
oThe Great Dark Spot could “swallow” almost all of
Earth!
oIt has a similar atmosphere to Jupiter

12. What Ever Happened to Pluto?
oScientists thought that Pluto isn’t a planet
because it doesn’t meet all of the qualifications of
being a planet
oIt is now called a dwarf planet

13. Other Galaxies
o There are obviously different types of galaxies
o A spiral galaxy has “arms’ that curves out from the
base
o An irregular galaxy has no recognizable, distinct shape
o An elliptical galaxy has an elliptical or round shape
