What Are Open Textbooks?
Published under a Creative Commons license, open textbooks are
available to students for free.
Open textbooks are typically distributed online at no cost and can be
purchased in a variety of other print and digital formats at a low cost.
Open textbooks are open educational resources (OERs)
- Open educational resources (OER) are free and openly licensed
educational materials that can be used for teaching, learning, research,
and other purposes. https://wiki.creativecommons.org/wiki/What_is_OER%3F
http://www.studentpirgs.org/open-textbooks/about
Why Open?
• Facilitates the free exchange of information
• Empowers faculty
• Sharing is scalable
• Allows higher education to take ownership of its
content
Why Open Textbooks?
A couple of reasons:
1) Cost

2) In the context of open, what is
possible = what is permitted
“My main point is that our
conversations about OER should
emphasize how all of it's benefits -
increasing academic freedom,
improving affordability and access,
revising and remixing - flow from
permissions. Permissions are what
differentiate OER from other materials
and are the source of their benefits.” -
David Wiley
