SIGNIFICANE OF LANGUAGE IN LIFE
1. Language is the primary method for human communication
While other species have ways of communicating with one
another, humans are unique in how well we master language.
Like other species, we have body language, but language –
whether spoken, written, or sign – is the most effective method
of communication between humans. It allows us to express our
feelings, thoughts, desires, and more. Without the ability to
communicate, we would not have the world we have today.
SIGNIFICANE OF LANGUAGE IN LIFE
2. Language and culture are closely linked
Language is a vital part of culture because it’s what people use to
communicate aspects of culture (like rules and values). People are introduced
to their culture through language, which they learn at a young age.
3. Language can reveal significant differences in people
example: It’s the difference between saying that “Mary writes” vs.
“Mary is a writer.” With the latter statement, we’re making a statement about
Mary’s entire identity. It’s who she is rather than what she does. The
researchers said the use of nouns indicated a need for stability and tradition,
which are more valued by conservatives.
SIGNIFICANE OF LANGUAGE IN LIFE
3. Learning another language can make you smarter
learning more languages also affects your life. Research shows that students
who know more than one language have better problem-solving skills, creativity, and
better critical thinking. In a study of bilingual children, researchers found that
children who spoke a second language at home performed better on cognitive tests
than households with only one language.
4. Language isn’t neutral
The last reason why languages matter is because of their influence. We talked
about how language reflects people’s beliefs (like their politics), but language can also
draw you into a belief or behavior. In her book Cultish, linguist Amanda Montell
examines various groups and cults – some more sinister than others – to reveal how
powerful words can be. All the best cult leaders are masters of language. Their words
build community, support group values, and shut down important questions. When
people become radicalized into dangerous groups, their entry point is language. It’s
important to recognize manipulative language, whether it’s your first language or a
language you’re learning.
FUNCTION OF LANGUAGE
1. Language as a tool to express feelings or express ourself
With language we can express everything implied in our hearts and minds openly to
others. What encourages us to express ourselves, namely: (a) to attract other people's attention
to us, and (b) as a form of desire to free ourselves from all emotional stress.
2. Language as a communication tool
As a means of communication, language is used to convey one's intentions to another,
which enables society to work together.
3. Language as a means of social integration and adaptation
As a means of social interaction, language is used by humans to adapt to their social
environment. A person chooses the language to be used depending on the situation and
conditions at hand. “Gaul” Language (slank) is used when talking to friends. Meanwhile, when
talking to parents or respected people, we choose the standard language.
FUNCTION OF LANGUAGE
4. Language as a means of social control
As a means of social control, language affects a
person's attitude, behavior, and speech. With language,
one can control or be controlled by other people or
society. Books, speeches, orations, religious lectures,
television shows, writings in newspapers, information
on social media will affect listeners or readers.
