Artist music video review
Savannah Feeley
‘ ’
The song that I will be analysing is ‘Vivienne’ by Sundara Karma, from
watching this music video it seems to be a Amplification narrative music
video my reasons for this is because the narrative music video is
influenced by the lyrical content, although there's different themes to
compliment the songs feeling. The target for the music video I will be
producing will be female teenagers that are aged 13-19.
Settings
 Garden
 Van
 Motorway
 City
 Forrest
 Road
 Corner shop
 Black studio
 Beach
 Lake
 At the beginning of the music video the setting is in a garden with the
artist as well as his friends and his girlfriend who must be ‘Vivienne’,
this location is relatable for audience members as this would be a
location where teenagers or young adults would chill with there friends
in the summer. The target audience for my music video that I will be
creating will be females aged between 13-19 because they will able to
relate to the lyrics a lot more than grown up males.
Setting ‘garden’
 As the video moves on the main characters get in a camper van to go
somewhere, this is relatable to a young audience as they're cheap, retro and
affordable as well as a perfect vehicle to use when going camping in Britain. As
well as this the camper van is a great location for this video as it’s a start to
the story and it makes the audience feel as though they're in the van with the
main characters. This location however doesn't link to the location so the van
does challenge the indie codes and conventions as it makes a audience
member think more about why they’re in the van and where they’re going.
Setting ‘van’
 This location has used to emphasis that the young adults are
traveling somewhere and motorways are usually seen when
travelling a far distance. The blurriness in the background also
shows how fast the camper van is traveling.
Settings ‘motorway’
 This location has been used in the video to show where the
young adults are and this shows that they're traveling
through a town.
Setting ‘town’
Setting ‘forest’
 This setting has been used to make the characters look more
mysterious within the wilderness. On the contrary this location has
also been used to show where the characters come from to walk into
the garden at the start of the video.
Setting ‘road’
 This setting has been used to show the location and the road of the
area to where the young adults are camping, as well as this it shows
how the couple have just come onto this road from a motorway and
this indicates how the couple have been a long ride. This location
also shows how windie the road is and also what the camping van
looks like on the outside to the audience members.
Setting ‘Petrol Station’
 This setting has been used to give a insight to why the young adults have
stopped at a petrol station and this is because the young female is drug
dealing at the corner to the man whose wearing all white clothing. Where he's
blended in with the white shutters. As well as this on a road journey some
people stop at a service station to get food or go to the toilet and this is
relatable to any audience member because everyone does this.
Drug
dealer
Setting ‘black studio’
 This setting has been used to make the music video mysterious and
it also resembles what time of day it is which is night time. On the
contrary the black background also looks simple and secluded
meaning that it wont be expensive to create a music video with a
location that has a black wall. This relates to the codes and
conventions of a indie music video as well.
Setting ‘beach/lake’
 This setting has been used as the music video builds up to this location as its the
destination to where the young couple have been traveling to arrive to. As well as
this the beach/lake has been used because it’s a simple location and its cheap to
film with no expenses. Despite this lakes are also seen as a romantic and because
the lyrics are about a girl 'Vivienne‘ as the artist is in love with her and this will be
relatable to a young audience as its young love, as well as this the location also
relates to the lyrical content as the song is about being intimate.
Costumes that the main male
wears
 From analysing the costumes the male wears a black cardigan and a navy shirt underneath this is casual for a boy, although the
cardigan is niche and not a lot of men wear cardigans and it looks grungy so from this the target audience that the band members
are trying to aim their music at is Indie Rock audience members.
 The shoes that male wears are Doc Martins and the target audience that normally wear these are stereotypically seen people who
are into the genre punk or indie rock. These shoes are relatable for the audience as a lot of teenager's wear these branded shoes.
 The males is seen wearing the swimming shorts as he's wanting to wear appropriate clothing when swimming so the clothing
doesn’t irritate his skin. The speedo's aren't exactly relatable for a young audience as they're seen as too revealing for a boys
private area , this indicates that the main male in this music video is trying to make himself different from everyone else as he
doesn't care what other people think.
 In the last image you can see the males full costume and it looks very simplistic and casual for a male, he's wearing black ripped
jeans as this artist may be wanting to target a indie rock genre audience because his full costume looks grungy.
 In conclusion all of the main male characters costume is relatable for a young adult /teenage audience as his clothing is trendy yet
also casual clothing to wear.
Costumes that the main female
wears
 The females costume is in trend, the females jeans are baggy and ripped mom jeans) with white love hearts
on them and she's wearing a over sized leather jacket with a white shirt underneath. Her clothing looks dull
and grungy and some female indie rock audience members may be able to relate to the females costume as
its different and unique and mom jeans are in trend. Some audience members may see this costume and
wear the clothing that the female is wearing as females like to wear anything that’s in trend or in their
favourite artist’s music videos.
 The female is also wearing Doc Matins shoes and these are seen as trendy so female audience member's can
relate to the females clothing and shoes.
 The female is seen wearing a swimming costume as she's wanting to wear appropriate clothing when
swimming so the clothing doesn’t irritate her skin.
Lighting
 In this music video different lighting is used to change the atmosphere and mood of the
video. Throughout most of the song it’s particularly bright and this represents the mood of
the song as its quite a upbeat song.
 At the start of the music video there's dark lighting with a hint of blue lighting, this colour
lighting is a connotation of loyalty as well as the sky and sea. Although the hint of this
lighting may be a reflection of the moon shinning onto the lakes surface.
 Bright lighting is used the most within this video as it indicates anything positive and the
props help set the scene to indicate what time of day e.g. the van would have its lights on if
it was driving at night. However towards the end red lighting is used as its reflecting on the
lyrical content about Vivienne which is about lust and love.
Props
 The mugs have been used on a bench table as its relatable for a young audience to sit and have drinks when socialising with friends,
as well as this the mugs set the scene of a relaxing location being outside in a garden. The mugs and cups however are all mixed up
and aren’t a identical set of mugs, this shows that they don’t really care what they drink out of as they’re youthful and don’t tend to
have everything organised.
 The cigarette has been used as a prop so the target can relate to smoking, in addition to this a lot of young adults and teenagers
smoke to socially fit in with their friends and the norm is to smoke in society.
 A phone has been used as a prop to indicate how the female in the music video is getting in touch with a drug dealer via phone. Also
the phone is used as the target audience can relate to using technology to get in touch with family and friends, in addition to this
the phone that is used is a Apple iPhone so from this any audience member can relate to using this branded devise as its seen as
trendy and it's a well advanced technology which they use.
 The keys have been used to indicate in the music video that the main characters are driving a vehicle, this is relatable for a teenage
audience as a lot of young adults have cars or motorcycle's.
 The rucksack has been used to show the audience that the main character's are camping, this is relatable for a young audience as
teenagers use rucksacks because they're trendy and spacious.
 The van has been used to show the audience what vehicle the main characters in the music video are driving in. having the van as a
prop makes the journey look more believable and relatable for audience member's as they know how it feels to go on a road trip.
Body language
2. The body language that’s seen in this image looks
relaxed as the friendship group look comfortable with
each other as they're all talking and looking at each
other when talking.
1. The body language that’s used in this music video
seems really relaxed and this shows how the
friendship group is having fun with each other. This
image shows the main characters laughing together
this indicates that the male and female are having a
good time and some audience member's may be able
to relate to the character's expressions.
3. In this image one of the characters is imitating
and pretending to play the guitar this may represent
that one of the group member's is in a band, the
target audience may be able to relate to this as they
know who from the video is in the music videos
band.
4. In this picture the lead female is
adjusting the males collar this shows
the audience how much the female
cares for her boyfriend and his
appearance. The target audience
may be able to relate to this body
language because audience
member's can relate being close to
someone.
5. In this picture the lead female
character is playing with the ripped
stitching in her jeans this indicates that
she may be nervous, restless or bored.
Also skin touching skin emphasises how
nervous this main female character
is.Some audience members may be able
to relate as it’s a nervous habit.
6. In this picture it shows a part
of the music video where the
female is exchanging money for
drugs, this is relatable for a
young audience as teenagers
like to experiment with drugs.
7. In this picture it shows
how passionate the couple
are with each other as they
embrace each other in their
arms whilst in the lake. This
is relatable for a young
audience because the young
couple hug to show
protection and affection for
each other. The skin to skin
that’s shown also shows and
resembles intimacy to the
viewer.
Camera angles
The camera angles that are shown throughout this music
video are;
• Over the shoulder shot been used in the garden to
show that the girl is leading the way to the garden.
• Low angle is used to show a sense of scale with the
apple towards the camera, this makes the audience
realise how small the apple is high up on a tree.
Another low angle shot has been used to show how
the girl is listening to the groups conversation, this
close low angle shows fascination within the
conversation.
• A low angle has also been used to when the female
and male are at the beach, the low angle is used to
show how far the couple has to jump from a broken
tree branch.
• Wide shot is used to show everyone in the garden as
this makes them look equal and it shows the scene
within the location, the wide shot also shows what
everyone is doing.
• A close up angle has been used to show that the
character is smoking a cigarette, this is relatable for
a target audience as young adult smoke when around
smoking social groups.
• A mid shot has been used because as a audience we
can see the shoulder's and heads of the main
character's in the music video. Having this angle
shows how the couple have embraced each other
with their body language, this is relatable for
audience member's as young couples hug each other
to show their caring and affection for each other.

CGI
 Within this music video there isn't much CGI that is used
as the narrative has been filmed to relate to the lyrical
content.
How does this music video follow the
genre codes and conventions?
 This video doesn’t challenge its codes and convention because the locations
that are used are simple and secluded just like the locations that are used in a
indie music video, the locations that were used and didn’t seem expensive
were; a garden, lake and motorway.
 The costumes are also seen as casual as they look both trendy yet comfortable
and the indie codes and conventions show costumes where the target
audience can relate because they would wear the same trendy outfit as the
artist.
 The lighting however does challenge the codes and conventions because
throughout the video the lighting is particularly bright as the video is set
throughout the day time and the bright lighting has been used to affect the
mood of the song. Although towards the end of the music video the lighting
begins to darken as it then turns to night time but this relates to the codes
and convention's as dark lighting is more mysterious with a indie music video.
However red lighting is used to symbolise the meaning behind the lyrical
content within the song which is love, lust yet danger about Vivienne.
 The props did challenge the genre codes and conventions because they music
video wasn’t performance based is was all narrative and from this no
instruments were used so just realistic props were used and these included a;
phone, keys, camper van, cigarette, mugs and glasses, phone and rucksack.
The props in this video did challenge the genre C&C although it worked well
because the target audience can relate to the props that are used.
Was it successful?
 What is successful about this music video is the
challenged genre codes and conventions with the
different lighting, this is because the lighting reflects the
different types of moods with the song and the lighting
doesn’t stay the same throughout which is interesting
and entertaining.
 Also the narrative between the male and female in this
music video seems to be really successful as it’s a
Amplification narrative music that reflects the music
video based on the lyrical content. The video
encapsulates me as a audience member because its
relatable for a young audience. Also when the couple are
in the lake embracing each other I found it interesting as
it related to the lyrics and how the artist is speaking
about Vivienne.

Artist A2 media music video review

  • 1. Artist music video review Savannah Feeley
  • 2. ‘ ’ The song that I will be analysing is ‘Vivienne’ by Sundara Karma, from watching this music video it seems to be a Amplification narrative music video my reasons for this is because the narrative music video is influenced by the lyrical content, although there's different themes to compliment the songs feeling. The target for the music video I will be producing will be female teenagers that are aged 13-19.
  • 3. Settings  Garden  Van  Motorway  City  Forrest  Road  Corner shop  Black studio  Beach  Lake
  • 4.  At the beginning of the music video the setting is in a garden with the artist as well as his friends and his girlfriend who must be ‘Vivienne’, this location is relatable for audience members as this would be a location where teenagers or young adults would chill with there friends in the summer. The target audience for my music video that I will be creating will be females aged between 13-19 because they will able to relate to the lyrics a lot more than grown up males. Setting ‘garden’
  • 5.  As the video moves on the main characters get in a camper van to go somewhere, this is relatable to a young audience as they're cheap, retro and affordable as well as a perfect vehicle to use when going camping in Britain. As well as this the camper van is a great location for this video as it’s a start to the story and it makes the audience feel as though they're in the van with the main characters. This location however doesn't link to the location so the van does challenge the indie codes and conventions as it makes a audience member think more about why they’re in the van and where they’re going. Setting ‘van’
  • 6.  This location has used to emphasis that the young adults are traveling somewhere and motorways are usually seen when travelling a far distance. The blurriness in the background also shows how fast the camper van is traveling. Settings ‘motorway’
  • 7.  This location has been used in the video to show where the young adults are and this shows that they're traveling through a town. Setting ‘town’
  • 8. Setting ‘forest’  This setting has been used to make the characters look more mysterious within the wilderness. On the contrary this location has also been used to show where the characters come from to walk into the garden at the start of the video.
  • 9. Setting ‘road’  This setting has been used to show the location and the road of the area to where the young adults are camping, as well as this it shows how the couple have just come onto this road from a motorway and this indicates how the couple have been a long ride. This location also shows how windie the road is and also what the camping van looks like on the outside to the audience members.
  • 10. Setting ‘Petrol Station’  This setting has been used to give a insight to why the young adults have stopped at a petrol station and this is because the young female is drug dealing at the corner to the man whose wearing all white clothing. Where he's blended in with the white shutters. As well as this on a road journey some people stop at a service station to get food or go to the toilet and this is relatable to any audience member because everyone does this. Drug dealer
  • 11. Setting ‘black studio’  This setting has been used to make the music video mysterious and it also resembles what time of day it is which is night time. On the contrary the black background also looks simple and secluded meaning that it wont be expensive to create a music video with a location that has a black wall. This relates to the codes and conventions of a indie music video as well.
  • 12. Setting ‘beach/lake’  This setting has been used as the music video builds up to this location as its the destination to where the young couple have been traveling to arrive to. As well as this the beach/lake has been used because it’s a simple location and its cheap to film with no expenses. Despite this lakes are also seen as a romantic and because the lyrics are about a girl 'Vivienne‘ as the artist is in love with her and this will be relatable to a young audience as its young love, as well as this the location also relates to the lyrical content as the song is about being intimate.
  • 13. Costumes that the main male wears  From analysing the costumes the male wears a black cardigan and a navy shirt underneath this is casual for a boy, although the cardigan is niche and not a lot of men wear cardigans and it looks grungy so from this the target audience that the band members are trying to aim their music at is Indie Rock audience members.  The shoes that male wears are Doc Martins and the target audience that normally wear these are stereotypically seen people who are into the genre punk or indie rock. These shoes are relatable for the audience as a lot of teenager's wear these branded shoes.  The males is seen wearing the swimming shorts as he's wanting to wear appropriate clothing when swimming so the clothing doesn’t irritate his skin. The speedo's aren't exactly relatable for a young audience as they're seen as too revealing for a boys private area , this indicates that the main male in this music video is trying to make himself different from everyone else as he doesn't care what other people think.  In the last image you can see the males full costume and it looks very simplistic and casual for a male, he's wearing black ripped jeans as this artist may be wanting to target a indie rock genre audience because his full costume looks grungy.  In conclusion all of the main male characters costume is relatable for a young adult /teenage audience as his clothing is trendy yet also casual clothing to wear.
  • 14. Costumes that the main female wears  The females costume is in trend, the females jeans are baggy and ripped mom jeans) with white love hearts on them and she's wearing a over sized leather jacket with a white shirt underneath. Her clothing looks dull and grungy and some female indie rock audience members may be able to relate to the females costume as its different and unique and mom jeans are in trend. Some audience members may see this costume and wear the clothing that the female is wearing as females like to wear anything that’s in trend or in their favourite artist’s music videos.  The female is also wearing Doc Matins shoes and these are seen as trendy so female audience member's can relate to the females clothing and shoes.  The female is seen wearing a swimming costume as she's wanting to wear appropriate clothing when swimming so the clothing doesn’t irritate her skin.
  • 15. Lighting  In this music video different lighting is used to change the atmosphere and mood of the video. Throughout most of the song it’s particularly bright and this represents the mood of the song as its quite a upbeat song.  At the start of the music video there's dark lighting with a hint of blue lighting, this colour lighting is a connotation of loyalty as well as the sky and sea. Although the hint of this lighting may be a reflection of the moon shinning onto the lakes surface.  Bright lighting is used the most within this video as it indicates anything positive and the props help set the scene to indicate what time of day e.g. the van would have its lights on if it was driving at night. However towards the end red lighting is used as its reflecting on the lyrical content about Vivienne which is about lust and love.
  • 16. Props  The mugs have been used on a bench table as its relatable for a young audience to sit and have drinks when socialising with friends, as well as this the mugs set the scene of a relaxing location being outside in a garden. The mugs and cups however are all mixed up and aren’t a identical set of mugs, this shows that they don’t really care what they drink out of as they’re youthful and don’t tend to have everything organised.  The cigarette has been used as a prop so the target can relate to smoking, in addition to this a lot of young adults and teenagers smoke to socially fit in with their friends and the norm is to smoke in society.  A phone has been used as a prop to indicate how the female in the music video is getting in touch with a drug dealer via phone. Also the phone is used as the target audience can relate to using technology to get in touch with family and friends, in addition to this the phone that is used is a Apple iPhone so from this any audience member can relate to using this branded devise as its seen as trendy and it's a well advanced technology which they use.  The keys have been used to indicate in the music video that the main characters are driving a vehicle, this is relatable for a teenage audience as a lot of young adults have cars or motorcycle's.  The rucksack has been used to show the audience that the main character's are camping, this is relatable for a young audience as teenagers use rucksacks because they're trendy and spacious.  The van has been used to show the audience what vehicle the main characters in the music video are driving in. having the van as a prop makes the journey look more believable and relatable for audience member's as they know how it feels to go on a road trip.
  • 17. Body language 2. The body language that’s seen in this image looks relaxed as the friendship group look comfortable with each other as they're all talking and looking at each other when talking. 1. The body language that’s used in this music video seems really relaxed and this shows how the friendship group is having fun with each other. This image shows the main characters laughing together this indicates that the male and female are having a good time and some audience member's may be able to relate to the character's expressions. 3. In this image one of the characters is imitating and pretending to play the guitar this may represent that one of the group member's is in a band, the target audience may be able to relate to this as they know who from the video is in the music videos band. 4. In this picture the lead female is adjusting the males collar this shows the audience how much the female cares for her boyfriend and his appearance. The target audience may be able to relate to this body language because audience member's can relate being close to someone. 5. In this picture the lead female character is playing with the ripped stitching in her jeans this indicates that she may be nervous, restless or bored. Also skin touching skin emphasises how nervous this main female character is.Some audience members may be able to relate as it’s a nervous habit. 6. In this picture it shows a part of the music video where the female is exchanging money for drugs, this is relatable for a young audience as teenagers like to experiment with drugs. 7. In this picture it shows how passionate the couple are with each other as they embrace each other in their arms whilst in the lake. This is relatable for a young audience because the young couple hug to show protection and affection for each other. The skin to skin that’s shown also shows and resembles intimacy to the viewer.
  • 18. Camera angles The camera angles that are shown throughout this music video are; • Over the shoulder shot been used in the garden to show that the girl is leading the way to the garden. • Low angle is used to show a sense of scale with the apple towards the camera, this makes the audience realise how small the apple is high up on a tree. Another low angle shot has been used to show how the girl is listening to the groups conversation, this close low angle shows fascination within the conversation. • A low angle has also been used to when the female and male are at the beach, the low angle is used to show how far the couple has to jump from a broken tree branch. • Wide shot is used to show everyone in the garden as this makes them look equal and it shows the scene within the location, the wide shot also shows what everyone is doing. • A close up angle has been used to show that the character is smoking a cigarette, this is relatable for a target audience as young adult smoke when around smoking social groups. • A mid shot has been used because as a audience we can see the shoulder's and heads of the main character's in the music video. Having this angle shows how the couple have embraced each other with their body language, this is relatable for audience member's as young couples hug each other to show their caring and affection for each other. Low angle Low angle Low angle Close up Low angle Wide shot Over the shoulder shot Mid shot
  • 19. CGI  Within this music video there isn't much CGI that is used as the narrative has been filmed to relate to the lyrical content.
  • 20. How does this music video follow the genre codes and conventions?  This video doesn’t challenge its codes and convention because the locations that are used are simple and secluded just like the locations that are used in a indie music video, the locations that were used and didn’t seem expensive were; a garden, lake and motorway.  The costumes are also seen as casual as they look both trendy yet comfortable and the indie codes and conventions show costumes where the target audience can relate because they would wear the same trendy outfit as the artist.  The lighting however does challenge the codes and conventions because throughout the video the lighting is particularly bright as the video is set throughout the day time and the bright lighting has been used to affect the mood of the song. Although towards the end of the music video the lighting begins to darken as it then turns to night time but this relates to the codes and convention's as dark lighting is more mysterious with a indie music video. However red lighting is used to symbolise the meaning behind the lyrical content within the song which is love, lust yet danger about Vivienne.  The props did challenge the genre codes and conventions because they music video wasn’t performance based is was all narrative and from this no instruments were used so just realistic props were used and these included a; phone, keys, camper van, cigarette, mugs and glasses, phone and rucksack. The props in this video did challenge the genre C&C although it worked well because the target audience can relate to the props that are used.
  • 21. Was it successful?  What is successful about this music video is the challenged genre codes and conventions with the different lighting, this is because the lighting reflects the different types of moods with the song and the lighting doesn’t stay the same throughout which is interesting and entertaining.  Also the narrative between the male and female in this music video seems to be really successful as it’s a Amplification narrative music that reflects the music video based on the lyrical content. The video encapsulates me as a audience member because its relatable for a young audience. Also when the couple are in the lake embracing each other I found it interesting as it related to the lyrics and how the artist is speaking about Vivienne.
