Nouns!
 What is a noun?
 A noun is a word for a person, place, or thing.
Everything we can see or talk about is represented by a
word which names it.
That “naming word” is the noun.
Ex.
Francisco, cousin, Frenchman. Names for people.
Rat, zebra, lion  Names for animals.
House, London, factory Names for places.
Countable nouns.
 What are they?
They are for thing that can count using
numbers.
They have a singular and plural form.
Countable nouns.
 For singular form use the determiner “a” or
“an”.
We use “a” is the first letter following the word
is pronounced like a consonant.
Ex. There is a cat on the street.
We use “an” if the first letter of the following
word is pronounced like a vowel.
Ex. I want an apple.
Uncountable nouns.
 Can only be used in singular.
 These nouns can’t be used with a number.
 They usually don’t have a plural form.
Ex. Coffee, milk, rain, sugar, air, etc…
 Note: Of course you can count money, milk, meat;
but then you would use the currency, liter, kilo,
glass,...and say that you have got:
Exercise.
 Put a C for countable nouns or a N for no countable.
1. The children are playing in the garden.
2. I don’t like milk.
3. There are a lot of windows in my house.
4. We need some glue to fix this vase.
5. My mom uses butter to prepare cakes.
6. Drivers must be careful, the road is slippery.
7. The exercises the teacher gives us are easy.
SOME VS ANY.
 When do we use them?
When we can’t specify or does not need an specific
amount.
We use SOME for positive statements.
We use ANY for questions and negative statements.
Ex. I need some vegetable to make soup.
Is there any students in the classroom?
SOME VS ANY.
 Sometimes we will see some in questions and any in
positive statements. When making an offer, or a
request, in order to encourage the person we are
speaking to say "Yes", you can use some in a
question.
Ex. Would you like to eat some popcorn while we
watch a movie?
Exercise.
 Write any or some.
1. If you’re hungry there’s____pizza in the fidge.
2. Did you see___good films while you were in
London?
3. Do you have___brothers or sisters?
4. You need to buy___new shoes.
5. I saw___birds on that tree yesterday.
6. Sorry, you can’t have a milshake. There
isn’t___more milk.
MUCH VS MANY.
 They indicate a large quantity of something.
We use much with uncountable nouns. (money,
bread, water…)
We use many with countable nouns. (students,
desks, windows…)
In affirmative sentences with so, as or too, we also
use much / many.
Ex. Laura has so many friends.
Exercise.
 Write many or much.
1. How___is this bag?
2. How___cupcakes do you want?
3. I wrote___ poems on my notebook.
4. She hasn’t got__patience.
5. Lindy has so___hair.
6. Franco wants to have___friends, because right one
he only has one friend.
Exercise.
 Write many, much, some or any.
1. Is there__milk in the fridge?
2. How___time is this concert going to last?
3. Would you like___cookies?
4. I visited___ European cities.
5. We don’t have___ water, we need to buy a gallon.
6. Antony has___books because he likes to read a lot.

  • 10. MUCH VS MANY.  They indicate a large quantity of something. We use much with uncountable nouns. (money, bread, water…) We use many with countable nouns. (students, desks, windows…) In affirmative sentences with so, as or too, we also use much / many. Ex. Laura has so many friends.
