Scenario Based Learning - Kristi Abbott Hi, I’m James. I have been working at the hotel for 3 months now. Today I have been allocated to work in functions.
James’s Training: OPTION 1 Scenario Based Learning - Kristi Abbott + In an event of an emergency you are required to blah blah blah…. Received when he first started at the hotel and mainly forgotten…
James is at work in functions when the fire alarm goes off. There is no scheduled drill today…. What does he do? Scenario Based Learning - Kristi Abbott

James’s Training: OPTION 2 ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],Scenario Based Learning - Kristi Abbott +
Benefits ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],Scenario Based Learning - Kristi Abbott Reference: Will Thalheimer, PhD. Using Linguistically, Culturally, and Situationally Appropriate Scenarios to Support Real-World Remembering
Scenario Based Learning - Kristi Abbott What will James choose to do? Principle 1: A character faces a challenge
Scenario Based Learning - Kristi Abbott More detail to help him decide … Create a story in which they can become engaged…
Scenario Based Learning - Kristi Abbott Principle 2: Show don’t tell… The consequences of his decisions start to become clear as the scenario rolls out…
Scenario Based Learning - Kristi Abbott Principle 3: Make it a conversation The storyline engages James, drawing him in and encouraging him to learn
Scenario Based Learning - Kristi Abbott James realises the consequences of his decisions and why they were/were not optimal in this situation… Principle 4: It’s the design not the technology
Scenario Based Learning - Kristi Abbott And James is able to read the hotel’s official policy so he knows the correct thing to do in the event it occurs And he can then try again now that he has more information to help him make the correct choice The design engages and immerses them in the learning…the academic rigour is still integral but does not dominate
Scenario Based Learning - Kristi Abbott Additional information available to help him decide Principle 5: Lead with the activities
Scenario Based Learning - Kristi Abbott As well as evacuation plans relevant to this particular scenario Information is shared after the activity – and when relevant to the learner, rather than before and then easily forgotten…
Scenario Based Learning - Kristi Abbott Principle 5: Make them care
Principle 7: Application not regurgitation ,[object Object],[object Object],Scenario Based Learning - Kristi Abbott + + + + = Easily forgotten = Retained knowledge

Notes de l'éditeur

  1. As stated by Julian Ridden – a presenter at the EDayz Conference, Adelaide – “ eLearning authors often put engagement as a distinct second priority to academic rigour” but it should be the other way round…
  2. Rather than providing all of the information up front like in OPTION 1, the information is made available when it is appropriate
  3. This also takes into account their different skill levels – allowing those that need to access to further information, but those that don’t can skip through.
  4. FIRE in the hotel!! You are responsible for the safety of the hotel staff…..
  5. Relevant + immersive + engaging + application based (with immediate feedback) = retained knowledge!
  6. Practice of real world skills with rich feedback in a safe environment that does not impact real processes or customers. Mastery of a technique, behaviour or method through guided rehearsals again and again as many times as is needed. An emotional connection of the learning event to the learner because of the realistic and immersive nature of the environment. The learning is embedded in the proper context by providing a simulation of the actual environment in which the employee or learner will be working. Ability to practice skills and interactions when and wherever an individual has access to a computer. Individualized instruction as a person progresses through the simulation at his or her own pace Ability reach geographically dispersed learners and allow them to to role-play, conduct meetings, and exchange information.
  7. Accessible learning to be delivered on an ‘as-needed’ basis Ability to update any component of the simulation as required Only basic PC skills required Cross generational appeal Choice of hosting options – the SimSkill suite can be hosted on the SimSkill site or hosted internally by PM Local, national or global deployment Clients will be able to capture learners key data according to their Learning Management Systems set-up Fees are a fraction of face-to-face costs Sliding scale of fee structure allows clients to gain lower licensing fees based on a higher number of learners
