LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT
TEAM BUILDING AND MANAGEMENT:
• A team is a group of people who are mutually
dependent on one another to achieve a common
goal.
• Team building is an important factor in any
organization, its focus is to specialize in bringing
out the best in a team to ensure self-
development, positive communication,
leadership skills and the ability to work closely
together as a team to solve problems.
Team Dynamics:
• The team member: Successful teams are made
up of a collection of effective individuals.
• These are people who are experienced, have
problem solving ability, are open to addressing
problems, and are action oriented.
• Team relationships: For a team to be successful
the members of the team must be able to give
and receive feedback.
Team dynamics cont…
• Team problem solving: An effective team
depends on how focused and clear the goal of
the team is.
• Team leadership: Effective team leadership
depends on leadership competencies. A
competent leader is focused on the goal,
ensures a collaborative climate, builds
confidence of team members, set priorities,
demonstrate sufficient “know-how”, and
manages performance through feedback.
• Organizational environment: The climate and
culture of the organization must be
conductive to team behavior.
Team dynamics cont…
Reasons for Team Building:
• Improving communication
• Making the workplace more enjoyable
• Motivating a team
• Getting to know each other
• Getting everyone “onto the same page”,
including goal setting
Reasons for TB cont…
• Teaching the team self-regulation strategies
• Helping participants to learn more about
themselves (strength and weakness)
• Identifying and utilizing the strength of team
members
• Improving team productivity
• Practicing effective collaboration with team
members.
Techniques of Team Leadership
1. Provide Clear Expectations
• Winning organizations know where they are
going and what is required to get there.
• Employees constantly need to know what they
need to accomplish.
• Communicating expectations in a clear, concise
manner is important. It’s also important to
communicate expectations on an individual,
department, and organizational level.
• Whether one-on-one, through memos, or in a
team meeting, keep communicating expectations.
Techniques of TL cont…
2. Give Employees the Tools for Success
• New computers are acquired, but no training
is provided for the computers; or worse, the
training doesn’t meet the need of the
employees to be successful.
• The policies are not implemented or followed,
so employees are hindered by barriers.
• Ask employees what they need, and then give
it to them.
Techniques of TL cont…
3. Recognize Good Work
• Take the time to recognize good work.
Recognize employees for finding solutions,
failing less, learning more, taking initiative,
working with others, creating outstanding
customer service solutions, sharing ideas; and
the list goes on. You get the idea.
• Take time to give a sincere compliment for
work well done and you, your organization,
and your employees will reap the rewards.
4. Get Interested in Your Employees
• Take the time to find out what interests your
employees.
• Find out what their passions are in life. Is it their
families? Is it a sport or hobby? Is it a career goal?
• Whatever it is, the great leaders take the time to
find out how to help their employees accomplish
their goals. Leaders know that by helping their
employees succeed in life, the employees will
have more passion about helping their leaders
accomplish their goals.
Techniques of TL cont…
5. Value Their Opinions
• Employees want to be involved in the process at
work. Giving their opinions is one way to
accomplish this.
• Take the time to really listen to what your
employees are saying. Take the time to ask
questions. Take the time to acknowledge their
opinions.
• They are sharing an idea, a concern, or an
emotion that you may be able to address to help
take your organization to the next level.
Techniques of TL cont…
6. Grow Your Employees
• If your employees want to develop
themselves, support them. Be the Captain of
progress and remove the barriers to
development.
• Don’t worry about losing your employees.
Once you do this, they will become even more
loyal to your goals and word will quickly
spread that you are the person to work for
because you develop your people for success.
Techniques of TL cont…
7. Communicate the Progress
• Outstanding leaders realize that ongoing
communication is the key to outstanding
performance and that employees yearn for this
feedback.
• They make sure their followers constantly know
where they stand. They are constantly
communicating with their employees in
relationship to the overall goals.
• Empathy, consistency, honesty, and a positive
attitude when giving employees feedback are
important to the way the employees receive the
feedback.
Techniques of TL cont…
8. Make Partners of Your Employees
• Make your employees your partner in
achieving your goals.
• Communicate the mission, values, and goals
and ask them how they see themselves in
relationship to these goals.
• Ask your employees for feedback on how to
better accomplish these goals. Involve them in
the decision-making process.
Techniques of TL cont…
Team Building Capacity
1. Be Aware of How You Work
• As the leader of the team, you must be extremely
aware of your leadership style and techniques.
• Are they as effective as you think? How well are
they accepted by the team you are attempting to
lead?
• Evaluate yourself and be critical about where you
can improve, especially in areas that will benefit
those whom you are leading.
• Be your own boss. Be flexible. Know who you
are as a leader.
Team building capacity cont…
2. Get to Know the Rest of the Team
• Hold yourself accountable for your actions to
assure you maximize performance and results,
you must make the time to get to know your
team and encourage friendship.
• Fully knowing your team means that you have
invested the time to understand how they are
wired to think and what is required to
motivate them to excel beyond what is
expected from them.
3. Clearly Define Roles & Responsibilities
• After completing step 2, effectively and clearly
define the roles and responsibilities of those
on your team.
• Each of your team member’s responsibilities
must be interconnected and dependent upon
one another.
• A team should operate as a mixture whose
unique strengths and differences convert into
a powerful united force.
Team building capacity cont…
4. Be Proactive with Feedback
• Feedback is the key to assuring any team is
staying on track, but more importantly that it is
improving each day.
• Feedback should be proactive and constant.
Many leaders are prone to wait until a problem
occurs before they give feedback.
• Take the time to remind someone of how and
what they can be doing better. Learn from them.
Don’t complicate the process of constructive
feedback.
Team building capacity cont…
5. Acknowledge and Reward
• People love recognition, but are most
appreciative of respect. Take the time to give
your teammates the proper honors they have
earned and deserve.
• At a time when people want to feel as if they are
making a difference, be a thoughtful leader and
reassure your team that you are paying attention
to their efforts.
• When people are acknowledged, their work
brings them greater satisfaction and becomes
more purposeful.
Team building capacity cont…
6. Always Celebrate Success
• At a time when uncertainty is being dealt with each
day, you must take the time to celebrate success.
• In today’s fast-paced world, people are not taking
enough time to understand why they were successful
and how their success.
• Celebration is a short-lived activity. Don’t ignore it.
Take the time to live in the moment and remember
what allowed you to cross the finish line.
• Leaders are only as successful as their teams and the
great ones know that with the right team dynamics,
decisions and diverse personalities, everyone wins in
the end.
Team building capacity cont…
