S8 Project Work II – First Review (27 - 01 - 2023)
S8 PROJECT WORK II - FIRST REVIEW
Aim And Objective Of The Project
• To develop an eco-friendly, cost effective fabric from extracted Calotropis fibres
which overcomes the problems in the production of wool.
• To study the extraction method of Calotropis fibre and analyse the properties
and potential of fibres.
• To convert the Calotropis fibres into knitted fabrics with efficient technology.
S8 PROJECT WORK II - FIRST REVIEW
Scope Of The Project
• Wool has a high environmental cost in terms of pollution, biodiversity loss, land
use and greenhouse gas emissions.
• Animal welfare suffers during shearing and short-term acute stress happens.
• Wool is expensive because its natural resource.
• Calotropis Fibre - The hollowness in the fibre creates air pockets within the
cloth, making it lightweight and adding thermal-regulating properties. Its has
inexpensive extraction technique.
• Organic Cotton - They are non toxic, hypoallergic and also softens the fabric.
S8 PROJECT WORK II - FIRST REVIEW
Feasibility Analysis
S8 PROJECT WORK II - FIRST REVIEW
• Plants are abundant
• Simple extraction techniques
• Conversion of yarn with open end spinning
Choice Of Components
• Calotropis Fibres
• Organic Cotton
S8 PROJECT WORK II - FIRST REVIEW
Proposed Methodology
• The Calotropis fibres are extracted by drying and retting process.
• The blend of Calotropis fibres and organic cotton is prepared at the ratio of 1 : 1.
• The blended fibres are carded for individualization of fibres and web formation.
• The formed web is laid randomly and open end spinning is carried out.
• The yarns are knitted into fabric.
S8 PROJECT WORK II - FIRST REVIEW
Novelty
• The usage of natural fibres for knitted wears are
economically feasible and can overcome the environmental
problems associated in wool production.
• The physical properties of the fibre can be utilised as an
alternative for wool fibres.
• A plant that is a weed is changed to an effective product
which enables low raw material cost.
