of
Omega -3 & Omega -6 acids and their
Health Effects
Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fatty acids, a class of
nutrients needed for our body to function normally.
These are the fats of life which help our cells to
function properly.
Omega-3 cannot be produced be our body and should
be supplied through the diet
Types of Omega-3 acids
There are 3 very important types of Omega 3 acids
1.Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA)
2.Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)
3.Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)
which have amazing health benefits
Alpha-linolenic acid
α-Linolenic acid is an n−3 fatty acid. It is one of two
essential fatty acids, so called because they are
necessary for health and cannot be produced
within the human body.
Eicosapentaenoic acid
Eicosapentaenoic acid is an omega-3 fatty acid. In
physiological literature, it is given the name 20:5. It
also has the trivial name timnodonic acid.
Docosahexaenoic acid
Docosahexaenoic acid is an omega-3 fatty acid that is a
primary structural component of the human brain,
cerebral cortex, skin, sperm, testicles and retina.
Functions of Omega-3 fats
Omega 3 plays a major role in a number of functions in
our body. Here are they:-
Relaxation and contraction of muscles
Blood clotting
Digestion
Fertility
Cell division
Growth
Movement of calcium and other substances in and out
of cells.
Sources of Omega-3 fatty Acids
The following are some of the sources of omega-3
fatty acids:
Fish and Fish oil: Sardines, salmon, tuna, trout, cod
Nuts and Seeds: Walnuts, flaxseed
Veggies: Spinach, cauliflower, brussels sprouts etc.
Oil: Flaxseed oil, soybean oil etc.
Beans: Kidney beans, pinto and mungo beans
Eggs
Health benefits
 Reduces cardiovascular risk factors
 Reduces morning stiffness, swollen joints and
rheumatoid arthritis
 Lowers the risk of cancer
 Reduces inflammation throughout the body
 Reduces the risk of obesity
 Maintains fluidity of cell membranes
Omega-6 fatty acids
A class of essential fatty acids found in fish oils,
especially from salmon and other cold-water fish, that
acts to lower the levels of cholesterol and LDL (low-
density lipoproteins) in the blood. (LDL cholesterol is
the "bad" cholesterol.
Functions of Omega-6 fatty acids
 Omega-6 is essential to the body and the main omega-
6 acid required by the body is Linoleic acid.
 Along with omega -3, omega – 6 acids also play a
crucial role in brain function, normal growth and
development.
 It also helps to stimulate skin, enhance hair growth,
maintain bone health, regulate metabolism and
maintain healthy reproductive system.
Sources of Omega-6 fatty Acids
Omega – 6 fatty acids are abundantly found in many
commonly eaten foods.
 It is primarily found in vegetable oils, which are very
much abundant in all processed foods.
 Meat and dairy
 Grains and cereals
Omega – 6 Deficiency
 Eczema or dry, irritated skin
 Water loss
 Hair loss
 Drying eyes
 Arthritis
 High cholesterol
 Kidney damage
Health benefits of omega-6
A western diet is usually rich in Omega 6
 omega-6 suppresses the immune system leaving the
body more susceptible to disease.
 Promotes formation of blood clots.
 Promotes increase in cellular growth, leading to
cancer
 It also leads to arthritis, mood disorders, osteoporosis
and obesity.
