ABOUT MDI GURGAON
Established in 1973, Management Development Institute (MDI) Gurgaon is one of the premier business schools
of India. Over 40 years, MDI has carved a unique position for itself in delivering management education to both
executives and graduate students. Located in a picturesque, serene, 40 acre campus, it provides just the right
environment to step away from the mundane world to quietly imbibe, peacefully introspect, and ultimately
learn. With Gurgaon emerging as the choice destination of the corporate world, MDI provides the added
advantage to its community and the corporate world.
MDI has three post-graduate programmes of management, human resource and international management,
four programmes for executives and two doctoral programmes. The B-school has the country’s largest
exchange programme and is the first to launch an International summer university. It is also the first B-School in
India to be internationally accredited by AMBA (Association of MBAs), UK.
MDI makes significant contributions in both the academic and corporate worlds through its incisive research
and through its training programs thus translating best practices from academia to industry. It has more than
70 full time and 105 visiting faculty of National and International acclaim. Faculty members have maintained
their area of focus on certain topics and have established their expertise and credence in the area.

ABOUT DELPHIQUE
Delphique is MDI’s National Management Convention hosted every year. The name has been derived from the
‘Delphi’ method, which is used by experts for forecasting and decision making. In the 18th year now, Delphique
is India’s only B-school event which focuses on strong research in various domains of management.
The convention brings together more than 70 corporate leaders from different management backgrounds and
thus ensures an enriching learning experience for all involved. It is the Perfect platform for people from the
Industry (knowledge partners and panellists), academia and the student community to interact and discuss
their perspectives regarding various issues in all the different verticals of management.
Famously known as the Red Carpet event of MDI, Delphique is a confluence of three events:
Research Panel Discussions – Stalwarts from the industry, eminent faculty and the brightest young minds
exchange ideas and critically evaluate various issues pertaining to several domains like Marketing, Finance,
Operations, Analytics, Communications etc.. The quality of research is ensured by domain-specialist faculty who
provide mentor-ship to the students. To increase the value of the research, there is a high profile panel
discussion on the research by experienced industry practitioners.
Vincenza – A Business Plan competition to promote spirit of entrepreneurship among students, under the
watchful eye of experts and interested investors.
Cerebro – Cerebro is the National Case Study Challenge. This competition has been designed to give students
real life cases of well-known companies in the industry and see what perspectives students of India’s best B-
School minds can give.
As a student-driven initiative, Delphique offers a unique platform for comprehensive corporate interaction and
access to research on contemporary business issues through engaging panel discussions, merging theory and
practice in a way very few forums do.

THE SECRETARY’S NOTE
Now it’s my turn to share the deep thoughts down my heart.
45 corporate delegates from top ranks of 32 organizations came to Delphique 2013
– 14. 76 students conducted research for the eight panels. All these projects
involved extensive primary research and the sample size achieved in the amount of
time given is absolutely mind boggling. To cite an example, Team Britannica
interviewed more than 50 schools with a sample size bigger than 5500. All our
Knowledge partners and panellists are not just happy but delighted. The panel
discussions saw interesting perspectives which stimulated challenging questions
from audience and I’m sure it must have been a wonderful learning experience for
the students at MDI.
Delphique 2013 - 14 stands as a testimony of words from the Convention mentor
Prof. Gita Bajaj “At MDI, anything is possible. There is tremendous potential that can
create wonders with constructive collaboration and dedicated determination to achieve”.

I take this opportunity to thank all our corporate delegates who despite being in high profile positions and tight

and that is what makes Delphique a success. When a toddler learns to walk, he needs a helping hand to hold
on. At MDI, our helping hand is no one but our faculty mentors. Despite having a hectic workload, they have
taken out time for guiding our research teams. We also thank our alumni who helped us reach some of the
eminent panellists who visited Delphique this year. Their tremendous efforts are commendable.
These thoughts are coupled with the 50 voices which worked round the clock, facing several hurdles, several
dilemmas, sacrifices, and moments of joy and moments of sadness. Every day was a challenge and every
moment was filled with excitement in the last six months. I met some of the most wonderful persons in my life
and I can never forget the experience of working with this team. This team created wonders in record time and
I need not explicitly speak about that. Congratulations Team Delphique on that and I’m very confident that you
can take it to a greater horizon next year!
One and half years ago, on 27th June, I wondered what I would take away from here during my induction week.
Today I’m proud to say that I’ll be taking a lifetime memory – Dephique 2013-14.

DELPHIQUE 2013-14
The 17th edition of MDI’s flagship National Management Convention, Delphique, was held between 3rd
and
5th
January, 2014, on the theme Humanitatis Obsequim, which means “Service to Humanity”. The three day
convention is a confluence of three events – The Knowledge Panel discussions, Vincenza – A Business Plan
competition cum mentorship programme and Cerebro - A National case study competition on “Entry Strategy
for Wealth Management Firm in India”.
Delphique 2013-14 got extensive corporate participation from knowledge partners such as
PricewaterhouseCoopers, Western Union, IBM, Fortis, Encyclopaedia Britannica, Evalueserve and
Exchange4Media. With topics ranging from the Analytics and its impact on employee engagement and
employee retention to Greening Advertising in Media and Entertainment, the presentations of student research
and the subsequent discussions by industry practitioners redefined our points of view. Industry stalwarts from
BCG, GE, Ernst & Young, Facebook, Axis Capital, JWT, AON Hewitt, Facebook, Aricent, AbsolutData, Times OOH
and Group M discussed on the research topics and the issues faced by the industry.
The case study competition Cerebro partnered with Cognizant with a case on Entry Strategy for Wealth
Management Firm in India. It saw participation from over 300 teams and finally IMT Ghaziabad, MDI Gurgaon
and IIM Kozhikode bagging the top three positions respectively. The b-plan competition Vincenza partnered
with Indian Angel Network, 91 Springboard, Sternfisher and My Box. The competition received over 100
submissions and saw ISB Hyderabad bagging the first position.
The convention also witnessed support from giants like Jindal Power, Powergrid and Coca-Cola. It got extensive
coverage in Hindustan Times, Hindu Business Line and Business World. Other media partners such as Impact,
MBAclubindia, Twenty19, Knowafest and CoolAvenues also covered the event.
In such a way, we students at MDI are aspiring to be the budding managers of tomorrow; to learn business
practices and implement them in the best possible way. And this industry interaction and mentorship helps us
to imbibe the learnings fruitfully.

INAUGURATION
The inauguration was presided over by Prof. Mukul Gupta (Director) and Chief Guest - Mrs. Renana Jhabvala,
Padma Shri awardee and Chairperson of SEWA (Self-Employed Women’s Association), who spoke of the dire
need for economic prosperity, but not at the cost of unruly competition. Co-operation, she said, has to be the
key driver for this change. The ceremony was also graced by Prof. Gita Bajaj (Chairperson, PGPM), Prof. Jyotsna
Bhatnagar (Chairperson, PGP-HRM), and Prof. Anil Anand Pathak (Chair, Student Affairs).

Ms. Renana Jhabvala
A Padma Shri award winner and Chairperson of SEWA, Self-Employed Women's
Association, Ma'am has been extensively involved in policy issues relating to
poor women and the informal-economy. She was instrumental in forming
SEWA Bharat a National Federation of SEWAs now in nine states of India and is
presently President, SEWA Bharat. She initiated SEWA in Delhi 2000 and is
Founder of SEWA Delhi.
She has been active at the international level & represented SEWA at the
International Labour Organisation (ILO) and other international forums. At the
South Asia level she was instrumental in forming Home Net South Asia bringing
together organisations in South Asian countries. She is one of the founders of
WIEGO (Women in Informal Employment and Organizing) based at Harvard
University, USA.
Ma’am has been active in many Government committees and task forces which
have formulated policies ranging from National Policy for Street vendors to the
Law for Social Security of Unorganised Workers.
At present she is Member, Prime Minister's National Skill Development Council
and Member, Steering Committee on Urbanization, Indian Planning
Commission.

Prof. Mukul Gupta
Director, MDI
Dr. Mukul Gupta has been with MDI since 2000 as a Professor of Marketing and
has held various administrative positions, heading every academic activity at
some point in time. It was under his leadership that MDI had become the
largest provider for Executive Education amongst all business schools in India
and the best globally networked Business School in India. In 2012, he was
inducted on the panel of international assessors for global AMBA accreditation.
He is a member of the Executive Board of AMDISA (Association of Management
Development Institutions in South Asia) for 2013-15. He is also a member of
the SAQS (South Asian Quality Assurance System for management education
institutions in the South Asia Region) Council.
He serves as a member of the Technical Advisory Committee, Department of
Scientific and Industrial Research, Ministry of Science and Technology,
Government of India.
He has international consulting experience and has been a member of various
policy and academic bodies like Board, I2E (Idea to Execution) Sawyer Business
School, Suffolk University, Boston, USA, Advisory Board, Programs in
Healthcare Management & Insurance Studies, School of Business, University of
Connecticut, USA, Jury, New Product Innovation Competition, Suffolk
University’s Business School, Boston, USA (2008 & 2009).
Prof. Gita Bajaj
Delphique Convenor
Dr. Bajaj is a Ph.D. (Business Administration) from AMU and an E & C engineer
(with distinction) from Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology, Patiala. In
2010, she completed GCPCL at Harvard Business School, Boston USA and is an
HBS Affiliate.
Dr Bajaj is a licensed Practitioner of Neuro Linguistics Programming (NLP). She
is a prolific writer and along with a colleague, she was bestowed a Gold Medal
for writing the Best Case All India in the ISB IVEY Case Writing Competition
2010. Prior to joining MDI in 2003, she worked in the industry for 12 years. Her
assignment with the Hindustan Times was as the Editor HT Horizons and HT
Careers . Before that she worked with The Pioneer newspaper.
She is a member of the Board of Studies, All India Management Association
(AIMA)-CME. She is on the Advisory Panel of the Area of Business
Communication at the Fortune Institute of International Business (FIIB) and a
member of the Curriculum Development Body for School of Media Studies at
IGNOU.

The business end of the convention started off with knowledge partners IBM and Western Union conducting
their respective panel discussions.
The HR panel, in association with Knowledge Partner IBM, discussed “HR Analytics and its impact on employee
engagement & employee retention.” The team presented its research on understanding HR analytics with a
recommended plan of action.
The Finance and Operations Knowledge Partner for Delphique 2013 was Western Union. The topic was
‘Creating Financial Inclusion through Socially Innovative Products and Changes required in the Existing BFSI
Infrastructure and Regulatory Framework of India’. A team of 6 students presented its research conducted
over a period of 2 months.

Prof. Pathak has taught at Post Graduate Department of Psychology and
Department of Business Management¸ Nagpur University¸ Nagpur for over
four years. He has also taught at FORE School of Management¸ for over two
and a half years. Teaching at MDI from past five years. In all over 11½ years
of teaching experience.
He has a consulting experience in companies such as SPMCIL (Security
Printing & Minting Corporation of India Ltd.) New Delhi, IPCL¸ IPGCL. He is a
part of consulting team at FSM¸ New Delhi for Designing Psychometric test
for MUL.
His areas of interest include Behavioural Training¸ Careers in Organization¸
Personality¸ Survey Research and Psychological testing. He has conducted
numerous training programs on behavioural aspects of management for
companies such as McDonalds, Coca-Cola, Fortis Healthcare Ltd.¸ JK Group¸

Prof. (Dr.) Jyotsna Bhatnagar is an Associate Professor in Human Resource
Management at Management Development Institute Gurgaon. Elected Board

Management, affiliated to Indian Academy of Management, USA. In 2010 -

He has done his MBA from the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade and his B.E
degree from the Delhi College of Engineering. At AON Hewitt, he started his
career as a Sales & Accounts Leader for the Asia Pacific region. He quickly rose
through the ranks to become a Client Development Leader (China and India)
and eventually Partner, a position he has held now for the last 2 years. Prior to
AON Hewitt, he has worked with Dr. Reddy’s Labs and Lurgi, Inc.

He joined Facebook India in 2010. He is an engineer from the prestigious NIT
Calicut while specializing in Electronics and Communication. He did his MBA
from XLRI in 1997 and specialized in HR and Industrial Relations. Prior to

HR leaders have to start attacking business outcomes versus trying to improve an employee engagement score
or increase participation rates on their initiatives. The proper implementation of analytics is a key initiative to
making HR a strategic function in any organization
As an organization’s data environment improves, analysts can look for patterns in HR data that can help
companies improve areas related to hiring or attrition, or pinpoint areas where labor related savings can be
found. Improving performance in of the employee lifecycle specific areas can produce impressive financial
results.
HR Metrics & Analytics: Use & Impact
1. Organizations with data that shows the business impact of HR practices report they are much more likely to
be a strategic partner than those organizations that do not have such data.
2. Organizations with measures of the effectiveness of HR practices targeted toward the workforce show a
significant difference in comparison to those who do not. Those organizations that can measure the impact and
effectiveness of their HR practices on the workforce are more likely to be strategic partners than are those that
cannot.

 Developed a Mathematical algorithm to predict which employees may become a retention problem
 “Project Janus” is an algorithm which for each job family analyzes rejected resumes to check for any top
candidate who may have missed

It hires over half a million new associates every year and HR analytics helps it in forecasting manpower needs to
meet annual goals both in terms of number as well as specific competencies, demographics etc.
Facebook
SPSS & Excel used for HR Analytics. People Analytics Team partners with HR Technology Team to build
infrastructure required to collect HR data, offer actionable analysis, interface with businesses to serve their
data needs. Thought leadership on the complete cycle of talent analytics, from sourcing & interviewing
candidates to managing attrition. Evaluate effectiveness of all HR investments such as new hire orientation,
training, compensation, performance management etc.
Role of Social Media
Generating awareness and driving traffic through social media and use analytics to determine which channels
are performing best, and focus your efforts around those. Use analytics determine latest talent trends, policies
across the industry on the basis of their social data, to improve company’s existing practices and communicate

thereafter increasing and proving ROI- Set up customizable feeds communicating the worth and value of each
employee externally, using the advanced analytics. Using data analytics to track the useful and the positive

Money Transfer for Western Union in India. He has about 18 years of

Ravi has been instrumental in launching Domestic Money Transfer for Western
Union in India. Ravi has done his B.Tech from IIT Chennai and MBA from IIM

The research team studied the RBI guidelines to understand the domestic money transfer market which was
followed by rigorous primary research including interviews of migrant workers, the retail player involved in the

The panel discussed in detail the research done on trends in remittances. At length was spoken was the need
for better branding awareness campaign and how Western Union could differentiate itself from its competitors.
A better customer understanding and innovative product development was seen as the hour. In addition, it was
agreed by the panellists that bargaining power lie with the intermediaries. Mobile wallets, which haven’t taken
off yet as seen as the game changer and panellists discussed how it could drive remittances further. Greater
penetration of players like Western Union was seen as the market was largely concentrated in the top few
cities. Panelists also highlighted that RBI Banking. Guidelines and other regulations have to be developed to
develop the nascent and growing market.

the support tools that exist for the purpose, and identify the trends and possible directions of research that can

The panel came to the consensus that technological advancements and breakthrough innovations will make
analytics more ubiquitous. According to Mr. Jain, the major challenges were the processing of data that is not
clean, unstructured, that which cannot be consumed in raw form and does not provide a complete picture.
Mr. Madhusudan said that the biggest benefits of analytics are the reduction of time to market, predictive

The objective of the research was to identify the loopholes in different benefit schemes of the Government
such as LPG subsidy, Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Act, Fertilizer subsidy and Food security
bill. Since there has been a growing resentment among the Indian citizens over the failure of effective
implementation of different schemes and the benefits not reaching the targeted masses, it is required to
identify the possible frauds and analyze ways of eliminating them. The research identifies the processes, the
stakeholders involved in different processes and the possibility of frauds in each level of implementation of
schemes.
An important outcome in MNREGA scheme was that advance planning is necessitated while considering aspects
such as work demand estimation, work identification, cost estimation and benefits expectation to make sure
that the employment can be provided within 15 days of being demanded. Project shelf program which
encompasses important projects will resolve issues such as ineligible beneficiaries, abandoned work, creation
of non-durable assets, unclear procurement procedures, and deficient stock maintenance practices. Provisions
are to be made to ensure that “labor surges” are accounted for in the planning.
The panel discussed upon the possibility of integrating the different schemes for which an adequate estimation
of cost in terms of capital and operating expenditure requirements has to be done. Further, the estimation of
efficiency gains in terms of financials, logistics and other services needs to be done. Considering
implications of integration of schemes on macroeconomic variables such as CAGR, GDP, Fiscal deficit, etc. is
another important task which has to be performed in future order to get a deeper analysis.
The panel discussed that in order to perform a risk analysis on all components of the chain, big data analytics
may be able reduce the overall costs of the system by providing predictive analysis of consumers and the
components of the chain. Collection of data in different region and identifying consumer trends becomes
imperative in order to get a good analysis.

DAY 3
The final day of the three day event began with a discussion by Exchange4Media, on the topic "Green
Advertising Media Entertainment (G.A.M.E)”. The students presented their comprehensive findings on the
above topic, which were sprinkled with facts and figures in just the right amount, to keep it lively and intriguing.
The Final Research Panel of Delphique 2013-14 was Encyclopaedia Britannica (Marketing) Panel.
The topic for research was "Research On The Usage Of Internet And Other Reference Resources By Students In
Curricular And Co-Curricular Learning In Middle And Secondary Education India." .
The presentation began with insights on the secondary & primary research conducted by the team, presenting
some amazing facts related to internet usage of school going children in category A, B and C schools. The panel

A team of 10 students was constituted to conduct primary research on the usage of Internet and other
reference resources by students of classes 6th
to 12th
in schools in India. This research involved field research
and analysis and final presentation comprised of major findings of research along with some key conclusions.
A total of 53 schools were covered totalling around 5000 student responses and 200 teachers responses which
was well appreciated by the panelists. Some of the research findings that interested them the most were the
variation in internet usage stats across classes, cities and major schools. The schools were subdivided into 3
categories – A, B, C based on their infrastructure, educational excellence and other parameters. The research
findings were further presented category wise and in each category, based on secondary and senior secondary
student responses. The research was not restricted to Delhi/NCR region only. The cities that were covered were
parts of Delhi, Gurgaon, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Mumbai, Kolkata and Jamshedpur. This further enhanced the
quality of responses that were gathered.
The panellists were impressed by the overall effort put in by the team and said that this initiative is one of its
kind and such a research, if properly utilized, has the ability to change the face of Indian education system.

Every Industry has a social responsibility and entertainment industry is no exception. Further the media and
entertainment industry has one added benefit and responsibility in being green that perhaps most other
industries don't. The industry is all about communication in one form or another. This transcends in making a
change in lives of many people.
The project was aimed to research the following:
The research consisted of studying sustainability practices followed by the industry in the West, interviews of
various stakeholders in the industry to find their sensitivity quotient, existing practices and roadblocks
experienced. This was followed by a survey of 150 respondents from industry based on the findings of the
interviews. These responses were analyzed to make recommendations for companies as well as industry.
Some of the following recommendations were discussed in detail during the panel discussion:
• Increasing focus on field operations
• Identifying hotspots so that small efforts yield significant impact
• Going beyond simple cost cutting measures, innovating
• Collaborating to share the cost of R&D – e.g. Sustainable Coalition in the industry
The panel discussion brought up very interesting insights and suggestions. The panellists brought up issues
which are major roadblocks in making sustainability a serious endeavour. Issues such as its impact on creativity
and how it could be made every stakeholder’s agenda and not only the sustainability team’s responsibility were
addressed. The discussion revolved around how Indian industry is different than the west and hence innovative
solutions suited to Indian industry were suggested.
The key takeaway was the unfortunate general tendency to confuse cost cutting measures with environment
sustainability practices.
Ms. Babita Baruah said that we needn't worry about taking from the planet, as long as we strive to give it back,
and then some. Mr. Sunil Kumar highlighted the need to broaden the scope of thought when it comes to
sustainability, while saying that Media, at the core, is a very creative industry, and must continue to stick to its
core job - which is to do what is best for the client.

CEREBRO – CASE-STUDY COMPETITION
Cerebo, the National Case Study Competition of MDI Gurgaon, aims to get the best minds of the country
brainstorm on possible solutions for real-time industry problems. In today’s fast-paced and dynamic business
scenario, there are many immediate issues being faced by managers across different sectors. Cerebro provides
a hands-on experience of solving such business problems and is a great tool for students to aid them in their
quest for becoming effective managers.
For the 3rd year in succession, Cognizant Business Consulting was the Sponsor as well as the Case Study Partner
for the event. This year, the Case study was focused on the Finance Domain. Titled ‘NSB Bank - India entry
strategy for Wealth Management’ it provided young minds a chance to gain a perspective on the increasingly
popular Wealth Management industry.

Mr. Rahul Handa,
Director Consulting,
Cognizant
Rahul Handa is the Program Management Consulting (PMC) Head (India) at
Cognizant Technology Solutions. Rahul has more than 13 years of experience in
management consulting & program management and line functions across
various industries like retail, healthcare, telecom etc. His specializes in Business
and IT Strategy Consulting and Program Management. Prior to Cognizant, he
has worked with Ernst and Young, Gartner Inc. and Atlas Development
Corporation where he has undertaken diverse roles such as business analyst,
project consultant, product manager, engagement lead and senior manager.
Prof. Anand K Sharma,
Finance, MDI Gurgaon
He was the Chair Professor¸ Railway Finance at the Indian Institute of
Management Bangalore (February 2007 to February 2010). He earned his
Ph.D. in Finance from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies¸
University of Bombay. Before that he completed his Masters from Delhi School
of Economics (academic scholarship recipient) and LL.B from University of
Delhi.
He has been a trainer for the last thirty years. A large section of the country’s
civil services including members of the IAS¸ IPS¸ and Finance & Accounts
services of central and the state governments have benefited from his

Synopsis
The event received an extremely enthusiastic participation from top B-schools across India including the likes of
various IIMs, XLRI and FMS. We had about 300 registrations for the first round. After picking the best ideas from
these initial entries, representatives from Cognizant shortlisted the best 6 teams for the final round. These
teams had participants from IIM Kozhikode, MDI Gurgaon and IMT Ghaziabad.
The judges were very impressed with the quality of the presentations by the students and the in-depth analysis
validating hard-core data. The participants were judged on the basis of level of analysis, innovative thinking,
originality and the quality of presentation as well as time management.
Team ‘Benchwarmers’ from IMT Ghaziabad bagged the first prize. Team ‘The Invincibles’ from MDI Gurgaon
and Team ‘The Konsultants’ from IIM Kozhikode came second and third respectively.

procurement¸ public private partnership and public policy. He shares his
perspectives with management students of IIM Bangalore through the elective
Managing Public Private Partnership. Arguably the first course of its kind to be
offered in any leading B-schools of the country¸ this elective draws heavily
from Dr. Sharma’s insights honed through his years of interfacing with the
academia¸ industry and the government¸ Collaborators of Research in Global
Projects¸ was also his stint at the Graduate School of Business¸ Stanford
University¸ California. Recently Dr Sharma has joined as Professor Finance at
Management Development Institute¸ Gurgaon in March 2010.

VINCENZA – B-PLAN COMPETITION
Vincenza is India's first business coaching program, with a business plan competition as a prelude. So far, B-plan
competitions do not go beyond the award ceremonies and the immense potential of the entrepreneurs, who
could not make it to top 3, goes unharnessed.
It aims to provide coaching at various levels, personalized and broad, for every participant in the competition
and to promote the spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation among the students of India. Every participant
was entitled to descriptive feedback on the missing ingredients in his/her Business Plan. This is really unique as
every potential entrepreneur gets some detailed inputs other than just a 'yes' or a 'no' for the next round. The
whole essence of holding an Event like Vincenza is to promote entrepreneurship, and we believe in not just
mere presentation of the best Business Plans, but to see to it that those worthy of it get implemented, with
Vincenza serving the purpose of an ideal platform.

Mr. Sanjay Verma,
Head IAN Incubator
Sanjay Verma is a management postgraduate in Human Resource with more
than 20 years of varied experience in Operations and Human Resources. He
has served with the Govt of India and the Private Sector with Companies like
Larsen & Toubro Ltd. Sanjay is passionate about creativity and
entrepreneurship. He joined Indian Angel Network two years back as the Head
of Operations and Partnerships. He currently Heads the IAN Incubator. He has
been deeply engaged in evaluating Business Plans for incubation and
investment and frequently interacts with early stage entrepreneurs on a daily
basis.

Mr. Matteo Chiampo,
CEO, Axind Software
Matteo Chiampo is an entrepreneur, investor and startup advisor, and brings
more than 20 years of operational experience helping early stage, innovative
companies grow and scale. Currently Matteo serves as CEO of Axind Software
Pvt. Ltd., a leading provider of SaaS solution for the fashion and retail industry.
Matteo has invested and mentored a number of startups in India, Europe and
the US, including Travelkhana, the leading marketplace for quality food for the
Indian train traveller. Previously Matteo served as COO of Eko India Financial
Services, the most successful branchless banking operation in India, where he
was instrumental in growing the company from a prototype in 2007 to more
than 2 million customers today, with 20,000 transactions worth $2M per day.
Matteo moved to Gurgaon in 2007 from Boston, MA, where he started and
grew a project management consulting company now operating in five
different countries, and worked for 10 years in software product management
at NASDAQ-listed PTC. Matteo started his career as a telemetry engineer in
Formula One in Italy.
Mr. Apurv Agrawal,
Vice-President,
91SpringBoard
Apurv is a founding member at 91springboard and leads the business
development and community development efforts. He helped 91springboard
establish itself as the hub for entrepreneurship activity in North India. He
founded ngoFuel.org, a non-profit facilitating technology usage for other non-
profit organizations using the crowd sourcing model. He also headed Business
Development for a social enterprise, What’s up Bharat. He is also the
President for Kairos Society India. The Kairos Society is an international
student run organization of entrepreneurs and innovators from the top
universities around the world.
He was among 2 Indians selected as young leader to the World Foresight
Forum, 2011 at The Hague, Netherlands.

Synopsis
Vincenza started in the month of November, where each of the teams had to submit brief Executive
Summaries, articulating their Plans. Unlike other B-Plan contests, Vincenza does not limit itself only to
management colleges. This year there was enthusiastic participation from engineering colleges and existing
start-ups as well. About 100 teams registered for the first round. Post the first round, 18 teams were selected
for the next phase, where they were provided mentoring to further refine their plans, and address issues under
the guidance of the Plans, where 91springboard and IAN played a critical role.
A variety of plans from domains as diverse as hospitality to as upcoming as e-commerce, were presented. The
judges felt the quality of the B-plans presented was very high when compared to the other B-plans which they
had judged. They more refined probably because of the mentoring which was provided earlier as a part of the
event.
Team “Rob – A – Shop” from ISB Hyderabad and Team “ShanSa” from VPCOE, Pune bagged the first two
positions respectively.

Gracing the ceremony Prof Gita Bajaj said “Every platform should be used to scale up to a higher level and
juniors should learn from this year and scale up the event to greater heights next year. The panel discussions on
contemporary business issues featured leaders from various industries and being an audience to this itself is a
learning experience for the students - besides the ones involved in research and presentation". Prof Pathak
appreciated the efforts put in by the students and said "It has been a very successful event, given that
everything was to be done from scratch - including raising sponsorships. The event ended up with an overall

He is the former CMD of NTPC. A 1971 batch Mechanical Engineering
Graduate from Government Engineering College, Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, and
Mr. Sharma started his career with the Madhya Pradesh State Electricity
Board. He joined NTPC in early February, 1980. He has authored a number of
Technical Papers on various subjects of Power Plant Operation &
Maintenance. With a rich experience of 38 years, Mr. Sharma brings with him
multi-functional knowledge in the areas of Operation, Project Implementation,
Corporate Planning, Commercial and Regulatory Affairs due to his long
association with the power sector. He has spent nearly 30 years of his career
in the various project sites. He has worked in various capacities in various
projects of NTPC and headed number of projects. Unfortunately, he could not
make it to the event.

  • 4. Page | 4 ABOUT MDI GURGAON Established in 1973, Management Development Institute (MDI) Gurgaon is one of the premier business schools of India. Over 40 years, MDI has carved a unique position for itself in delivering management education to both executives and graduate students. Located in a picturesque, serene, 40 acre campus, it provides just the right environment to step away from the mundane world to quietly imbibe, peacefully introspect, and ultimately learn. With Gurgaon emerging as the choice destination of the corporate world, MDI provides the added advantage to its community and the corporate world. MDI has three post-graduate programmes of management, human resource and international management, four programmes for executives and two doctoral programmes. The B-school has the country’s largest exchange programme and is the first to launch an International summer university. It is also the first B-School in India to be internationally accredited by AMBA (Association of MBAs), UK. MDI makes significant contributions in both the academic and corporate worlds through its incisive research and through its training programs thus translating best practices from academia to industry. It has more than 70 full time and 105 visiting faculty of National and International acclaim. Faculty members have maintained their area of focus on certain topics and have established their expertise and credence in the area. MDI has constantly endeavoured to grow and consolidate its global network.   • 5. Page | 5 ABOUT DELPHIQUE Delphique is MDI’s National Management Convention hosted every year. The name has been derived from the ‘Delphi’ method, which is used by experts for forecasting and decision making. In the 18th year now, Delphique is India’s only B-school event which focuses on strong research in various domains of management. The convention brings together more than 70 corporate leaders from different management backgrounds and thus ensures an enriching learning experience for all involved. It is the Perfect platform for people from the Industry (knowledge partners and panellists), academia and the student community to interact and discuss their perspectives regarding various issues in all the different verticals of management. Famously known as the Red Carpet event of MDI, Delphique is a confluence of three events: Research Panel Discussions – Stalwarts from the industry, eminent faculty and the brightest young minds exchange ideas and critically evaluate various issues pertaining to several domains like Marketing, Finance, Operations, Analytics, Communications etc.. The quality of research is ensured by domain-specialist faculty who provide mentor-ship to the students. To increase the value of the research, there is a high profile panel discussion on the research by experienced industry practitioners. Vincenza – A Business Plan competition to promote spirit of entrepreneurship among students, under the watchful eye of experts and interested investors. Cerebro – Cerebro is the National Case Study Challenge. This competition has been designed to give students real life cases of well-known companies in the industry and see what perspectives students of India’s best B- School minds can give. As a student-driven initiative, Delphique offers a unique platform for comprehensive corporate interaction and access to research on contemporary business issues through engaging panel discussions, merging theory and practice in a way very few forums do.

Page | 6 THE SECRETARY’S NOTE Now it’s my turn to share the deep thoughts down my heart. 45 corporate delegates from top ranks of 32 organizations came to Delphique 2013 – 14. 76 students conducted research for the eight panels. All these projects involved extensive primary research and the sample size achieved in the amount of time given is absolutely mind boggling. To cite an example, Team Britannica interviewed more than 50 schools with a sample size bigger than 5500. All our Knowledge partners and panellists are not just happy but delighted. The panel discussions saw interesting perspectives which stimulated challenging questions from audience and I’m sure it must have been a wonderful learning experience for the students at MDI. Delphique 2013 - 14 stands as a testimony of words from the Convention mentor Prof. Gita Bajaj “At MDI, anything is possible. There is tremendous potential that can create wonders with constructive collaboration and dedicated determination to achieve”. These thoughts are coupled with the 50 voices which worked round the clock, facing several hurdles, several dilemmas, sacrifices, and moments of joy and moments of sadness. Every day was a challenge and every moment was filled with excitement in the last six months. I met some of the most wonderful persons in my life and I can never forget the experience of working with this team. One and half years ago, on 27th June, I wondered what I would take away from here during my induction week. Today I’m proud to say that I’ll be taking a lifetime memory – Dephique 2013-14. Page | 8 DELPHIQUE 2013-14 The 17th edition of MDI’s flagship National Management Convention, Delphique, was held between 3rd and 5th January, 2014, on the theme Humanitatis Obsequim, which means “Service to Humanity”. The three day convention is a confluence of three events – The Knowledge Panel discussions, Vincenza – A Business Plan competition cum mentorship programme and Cerebro - A National case study competition on “Entry Strategy for Wealth Management Firm in India”. Delphique 2013-14 got extensive corporate participation from knowledge partners such as PricewaterhouseCoopers, Western Union, IBM, Fortis, Encyclopaedia Britannica, Evalueserve and Exchange4Media. With topics ranging from the Analytics and its impact on employee engagement and employee retention to Greening Advertising in Media and Entertainment, the presentations of student research and the subsequent discussions by industry practitioners redefined our points of view. Industry stalwarts from BCG, GE, Ernst & Young, Facebook, Axis Capital, JWT, AON Hewitt, Facebook, Aricent, AbsolutData, Times OOH and Group M discussed on the research topics and the issues faced by the industry. The case study competition Cerebro partnered with Cognizant with a case on Entry Strategy for Wealth Management Firm in India. It saw participation from over 300 teams and finally IMT Ghaziabad, MDI Gurgaon and IIM Kozhikode bagging the top three positions respectively. The b-plan competition Vincenza partnered with Indian Angel Network, 91 Springboard, Sternfisher and My Box. The competition received over 100 submissions and saw ISB Hyderabad bagging the first position. The convention also witnessed support from giants like Jindal Power, Powergrid and Coca-Cola. It got extensive coverage in Hindustan Times, Hindu Business Line and Business World. Other media partners such as Impact, MBAclubindia, Twenty19, Knowafest and CoolAvenues also covered the event. In such a way, we students at MDI are aspiring to be the budding managers of tomorrow; to learn business practices and implement them in the best possible way. And this industry interaction and mentorship helps us to imbibe the learnings fruitfully.

Page | 9 INAUGURATION The inauguration was presided over by Prof. Mukul Gupta (Director) and Chief Guest - Mrs. Renana Jhabvala, Padma Shri awardee and Chairperson of SEWA (Self-Employed Women’s Association), who spoke of the dire need for economic prosperity, but not at the cost of unruly competition. Co-operation, she said, has to be the key driver for this change. The ceremony was also graced by Prof. Gita Bajaj (Chairperson, PGPM), Prof. Jyotsna Bhatnagar (Chairperson, PGP-HRM), and Prof. Anil Anand Pathak (Chair, Student Affairs). Chief Guest Ms. Renana Jhabvala A Padma Shri award winner and Chairperson of SEWA, Self-Employed Women's Association, Ma'am has been extensively involved in policy issues relating to poor women and the informal-economy. She was instrumental in forming SEWA Bharat a National Federation of SEWAs now in nine states of India and is presently President, SEWA Bharat. She initiated SEWA in Delhi 2000 and is Founder of SEWA Delhi. She has been active at the international level & represented SEWA at the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and other international forums. At the South Asia level she was instrumental in forming Home Net South Asia bringing together organisations in South Asian countries. She is one of the founders of WIEGO (Women in Informal Employment and Organizing) based at Harvard University, USA. Ma’am has been active in many Government committees and task forces which have formulated policies ranging from National Policy for Street vendors to the Law for Social Security of Unorganised Workers. At present she is Member, Prime Minister's National Skill Development Council and Member, Steering Committee on Urbanization, Indian Planning Commission.

Page | 10 Prof. Mukul Gupta Director, MDI Dr. Mukul Gupta has been with MDI since 2000 as a Professor of Marketing and has held various administrative positions, heading every academic activity at some point in time. It was under his leadership that MDI had become the largest provider for Executive Education amongst all business schools in India and the best globally networked Business School in India. In 2012, he was inducted on the panel of international assessors for global AMBA accreditation. He is a member of the Executive Board of AMDISA (Association of Management Development Institutions in South Asia) for 2013-15. He is also a member of the SAQS (South Asian Quality Assurance System for management education institutions in the South Asia Region) Council. He serves as a member of the Technical Advisory Committee, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. He has international consulting experience and has been a member of various policy and academic bodies like Board, I2E (Idea to Execution) Sawyer Business School, Suffolk University, Boston, USA, Advisory Board, Programs in Healthcare Management & Insurance Studies, School of Business, University of Connecticut, USA, Jury, New Product Innovation Competition, Suffolk University’s Business School, Boston, USA (2008 & 2009). Prof. Gita Bajaj Delphique Convenor Dr. Bajaj is a Ph.D. (Business Administration) from AMU and an E & C engineer (with distinction) from Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology, Patiala. In 2010, she completed GCPCL at Harvard Business School, Boston USA and is an HBS Affiliate. Dr Bajaj is a licensed Practitioner of Neuro Linguistics Programming (NLP). She is a prolific writer and along with a colleague, she was bestowed a Gold Medal for writing the Best Case All India in the ISB IVEY Case Writing Competition 2010. Prior to joining MDI in 2003, she worked in the industry for 12 years. Her assignment with the Hindustan Times was as the Editor HT Horizons and HT Careers . Before that she worked with The Pioneer newspaper. She is a member of the Board of Studies, All India Management Association (AIMA)-CME. She is on the Advisory Panel of the Area of Business Communication at the Fortune Institute of International Business (FIIB) and a member of the Curriculum Development Body for School of Media Studies at IGNOU.
  • 11. Page | 11 DAY 1 The business end of the convention started off with knowledge partners IBM and Western Union conducting their respective panel discussions. The HR panel, in association with Knowledge Partner IBM, discussed “HR Analytics and its impact on employee engagement & employee retention.” The team presented its research on understanding HR analytics with a recommended plan of action. The Finance and Operations Knowledge Partner for Delphique 2013 was Western Union. The topic was ‘Creating Financial Inclusion through Socially Innovative Products and Changes required in the Existing BFSI Infrastructure and Regulatory Framework of India’. A team of 6 students presented its research conducted over a period of 2 months. Prof. Anil Anand Pathak Chairperson, Student Affairs Prof. Pathak has taught at Post Graduate Department of Psychology and Department of Business Management¸ Nagpur University¸ Nagpur for over four years. He has also taught at FORE School of Management¸ for over two and a half years. Teaching at MDI from past five years. In all over 11½ years of teaching experience. He has a consulting experience in companies such as SPMCIL (Security Printing & Minting Corporation of India Ltd.) New Delhi, IPCL¸ IPGCL. He is a part of consulting team at FSM¸ New Delhi for Designing Psychometric test for MUL. His areas of interest include Behavioural Training¸ Careers in Organization¸ Personality¸ Survey Research and Psychological testing. He has conducted numerous training programs on behavioural aspects of management for companies such as McDonalds, Coca-Cola, Fortis Healthcare Ltd.¸ JK Group¸ Apollo Tyres¸ Bank of Baroda¸ Power Grid ¸ Bharat Electronics Ltd.¸ Asea Brown Boveri¸ LIC, NIC¸ ONGC¸ IOCL¸ Nestle¸ NHPC.

IBM, HR ANALYTICS Discussion Topic Analytics and its impact on employee engagement and employee retention Panelists Prof. Jyotsna Bhatnagar, Human Relations, MDI Gurgaon Prof. (Dr.) Jyotsna Bhatnagar is an Associate Professor in Human Resource Management at Management Development Institute Gurgaon. Elected Board of Governor for Asia Academy of Management, Asia Representative from India affiliated to Academy of Management, USA: Treasurer, Indian Academy of Management, affiliated to Indian Academy of Management, USA. In 2010 - 2011, she completed GCPCL at Harvard Business School, Boston USA and is an HBS affiliate. A Masters in Psychology from Lucknow University, she is a PhD from Indian Institute of Technology¸ New Delhi. She launched her academic career at IIM - Ahmedabad in 1990¸ and has over fifteen years of corporate and academic experience. Mr. Sushant Upadhyay, Partner & CCO, Aon Hewitt He has done his MBA from the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade and his B.E degree from the Delhi College of Engineering. At AON Hewitt, he started his career as a Sales & Accounts Leader for the Asia Pacific region. He quickly rose through the ranks to become a Client Development Leader (China and India) and eventually Partner, a position he has held now for the last 2 years. Prior to AON Hewitt, he has worked with Dr. Reddy’s Labs and Lurgi, Inc.
  • 13. Page | 13 Mr. Manoj Varghese, Director, Facebook He joined Facebook India in 2010. He is an engineer from the prestigious NIT Calicut while specializing in Electronics and Communication. He did his MBA from XLRI in 1997 and specialized in HR and Industrial Relations. Prior to Facebook, he has worked as HR Director (Japan and Asia Pacific) for Google and has some previous experience as the HR Director (India). He also had a two year stint at Dell and a stint at Infosys before that. Mr. Raj Nehru, Associate Director, IBM Mr. Nehru has held many leadership roles in HR in IBM, since he joined in 2005. Before that he has worked for about 10 years in Anand Group. Page | 18 The research team studied the RBI guidelines to understand the domestic money transfer market which was followed by rigorous primary research including interviews of migrant workers, the retail player involved in the business as well as getting hands on experience with engaging in the money transfer operation. Students also conducted expert interview from the leading players of this business to get the better insight. The panel discussed in detail the research done on trends in remittances. At length was spoken was the need for better branding awareness campaign and how Western Union could differentiate itself from its competitors. A better customer understanding and innovative product development was seen as the hour. In addition, it was agreed by the panellists that bargaining power lie with the intermediaries. Mobile wallets, which haven’t taken off yet as seen as the game changer and panellists discussed how it could drive remittances further. Greater penetration of players like Western Union was seen as the market was largely concentrated in the top few cities. Panelists also highlighted that RBI Banking. Guidelines and other regulations have to be developed to develop the nascent and growing market. DAY 2 The second day saw three panel discussions with Evalueserve conducting its panel discussion in the morning. The Analytics panel discussion of Evalueserve was on the topic, “How Are Knowledge Processes Likely To Evolve in the Next 5-7 Years Due To Technology Advancements?” The afternoon session started with the Health Care panel, by Fortis. The objective of the panel was to look into the workings of hospital facility from a management perspective and discuss about the growing importance and significance of the hospital administrator role. The Finance/Analytics panel with PwC discussed "Combating fraud in benefits transfer schemes of the government." The panel had a healthy discussion afterwards where they put forward their suggestions based on their rich experience.

The panel appreciated the fact that while there have been considerable and significant developments in knowledge capture and representation in knowledge processes, it is useful to sometimes review our position in the area, study the evolution of research in analytics, and from past and current trends, try and foresee future developments. The panel further agreed that it is important to review both our understanding of the field and the support tools that exist for the purpose, and identify the trends and possible directions of research that can evolve in the future. The panel came to the consensus that technological advancements and breakthrough innovations will make analytics more ubiquitous. According to Mr. Jain, the major challenges were the processing of data that is not clean, unstructured, that which cannot be consumed in raw form and does not provide a complete picture. Mr. Madhusudan said that the biggest benefits of analytics are the reduction of time to market, predictive analytics directing decision making, thus replacing traditional market research. Knowledge industry is set to grow further and, with disruptive technologies, is expected to play a more vital role in the value chain of The key business drivers that will actually lead to increased need of knowledge industry are: 1. Page | 24 Panel Discussion The objective of the research was to identify the loopholes in different benefit schemes of the Government such as LPG subsidy, Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Act, Fertilizer subsidy and Food security bill. Since there has been a growing resentment among the Indian citizens over the failure of effective implementation of different schemes and the benefits not reaching the targeted masses, it is required to identify the possible frauds and analyze ways of eliminating them. The research identifies the processes, the stakeholders involved in different processes and the possibility of frauds in each level of implementation of schemes. An important outcome in MNREGA scheme was that advance planning is necessitated while considering aspects such as work demand estimation, work identification, cost estimation and benefits expectation to make sure that the employment can be provided within 15 days of being demanded. Project shelf program which encompasses important projects will resolve issues such as ineligible beneficiaries, abandoned work, creation of non-durable assets, unclear procurement procedures, and deficient stock maintenance practices. Provisions are to be made to ensure that “labor surges” are accounted for in the planning. The panel discussed upon the possibility of integrating the different schemes for which an adequate estimation of cost in terms of capital and operating expenditure requirements has to be done. Further, the estimation of efficiency gains in terms of financials, logistics and other services needs to be done. Considering implications of integration of schemes on macroeconomic variables such as CAGR, GDP, Fiscal deficit, etc. is another important task which has to be performed in future order to get a deeper analysis. The panel discussed that in order to perform a risk analysis on all components of the chain, big data analytics may be able reduce the overall costs of the system by providing predictive analysis of consumers and the components of the chain. Collection of data in different region and identifying consumer trends becomes imperative in order to get a good analysis. Dr. Sangeeta Chhabra, Researcher, Govt. Consultant Dr. Chhabra is a researcher and a govt. consultant and is currently the head of a major cloud computing company. She has taught in National Institute of Financial Management. Her areas of interests are Financial Markets and Economics.

The primary research included visits to Fortis Facilities, telephonic interviews with resource persons at Apollo Hospitals and Medanta – The Medicity. Informal interactions also took place with students (Business Management and Medicine) The team presented its research findings and the gaps between practicing doctors (people involved in direct care) and administration (management) personnel in front of the panel. Some of the recommendations given were admin orientation stints, green channel, campus connect programs, reinforcement of buddy shadow program and conferences on importance of hospital administration. The panel discussion focussed on the medical sensitivity, need for medical training & leadership and about the future of hospitals and drivers for their growth. Ms Pooja Bhandari focussed on leadership and identifying gaps in management. She gave examples of Dr. Devi Shetty who has done an incredible job in shaping the patient care. Ms Anjana Nath pointed out that there is a dearth of both medical and non medical staff in general. All the panellists agreed that attitude to serve and the passion differentiates the healthcare in private from govt. Also in line with our theme there was a discussion regarding charity and humanity, which was concluded by Daljit Singh’s point that we need a viable and successful business model to make charity sustainable DAY 3 The final day of the three day event began with a discussion by Exchange4Media, on the topic "Green Advertising Media Entertainment (G.A.M.E)”. The students presented their comprehensive findings on the above topic, which were sprinkled with facts and figures in just the right amount, to keep it lively and intriguing. The Final Research Panel of Delphique 2013-14 was Encyclopaedia Britannica (Marketing) Panel. The topic for research was "Research On The Usage Of Internet And Other Reference Resources By Students In Curricular And Co-Curricular Learning In Middle And Secondary Education India." . The presentation began with insights on the secondary & primary research conducted by the team, presenting some amazing facts related to internet usage of school going children in category A, B and C schools. The panel brought in refreshing thoughts on challenges like cyber bullying, plagiarism, establishing work culture and ethics for an open ended discussion.

Page | 33 Panel Discussion For the 2-month duration of the project, students explored the following:  Availability of internet to students at home  Current usage of online resources by students for assignments, projects and research  If there is a need of reliable reference materials by students and parents  Usage of school library by students for above mentioned activities  If availability of digital library in schools will be beneficial A team of 10 students was constituted to conduct primary research on the usage of Internet and other reference resources by students of classes 6th to 12th in schools in India. This research involved field research and analysis and final presentation comprised of major findings of research along with some key conclusions. A total of 53 schools were covered totalling around 5000 student responses and 200 teachers responses which was well appreciated by the panelists. Some of the research findings that interested them the most were the variation in internet usage stats across classes, cities and major schools. The schools were subdivided into 3 categories – A, B, C based on their infrastructure, educational excellence and other parameters. The research findings were further presented category wise and in each category, based on secondary and senior secondary student responses. The research was not restricted to Delhi/NCR region only. The cities that were covered were parts of Delhi, Gurgaon, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Mumbai, Kolkata and Jamshedpur. This further enhanced the quality of responses that were gathered. The panellists were impressed by the overall effort put in by the team and said that this initiative is one of its kind and such a research, if properly utilized, has the ability to change the face of Indian education system. The topic of her thesis is Evaluation of Relationship Marketing in Financial Services in India. An academician by heart, Prof. Srivastava firmly believes that management education goes beyond classroom and includes various components on industry interaction, social outreach and research and development. She has nine years of experience across education and industry cutting across teaching, research and consulting activities. Her areas of interest include services marketing, strategic management, educational planning and administration. Mr. Sunil Kumar, President, Exchange4media group Mr. Kumar holds a good reputation in the Indian advertisement and media industry and can be seen at events such as the prestigious Cannes Lions.   • 37. Page | 37 Panel Discussion Every Industry has a social responsibility and entertainment industry is no exception. Further the media and entertainment industry has one added benefit and responsibility in being green that perhaps most other industries don't. The industry is all about communication in one form or another. This transcends in making a change in lives of many people. The project was aimed to research the following: The research consisted of studying sustainability practices followed by the industry in the West, interviews of various stakeholders in the industry to find their sensitivity quotient, existing practices and roadblocks experienced. This was followed by a survey of 150 respondents from industry based on the findings of the interviews. These responses were analyzed to make recommendations for companies as well as industry. Some of the following recommendations were discussed in detail during the panel discussion: • Increasing focus on field operations • Identifying hotspots so that small efforts yield significant impact • Going beyond simple cost cutting measures, innovating • Collaborating to share the cost of R&D – e.g. Sustainable Coalition in the industry The panel discussion brought up very interesting insights and suggestions. The panellists brought up issues which are major roadblocks in making sustainability a serious endeavour. Issues such as its impact on creativity and how it could be made every stakeholder’s agenda and not only the sustainability team’s responsibility were addressed. The discussion revolved around how Indian industry is different than the west and hence innovative solutions suited to Indian industry were suggested. The key takeaway was the unfortunate general tendency to confuse cost cutting measures with environment sustainability practices. Ms. Babita Baruah said that we needn't worry about taking from the planet, as long as we strive to give it back, and then some. Mr. Sunil Kumar highlighted the need to broaden the scope of thought when it comes to sustainability, while saying that Media, at the core, is a very creative industry, and must continue to stick to its core job - which is to do what is best for the client. In today’s fast-paced and dynamic business scenario, there are many immediate issues being faced by managers across different sectors. Cerebro provides a hands-on experience of solving such business problems and is a great tool for students to aid them in their quest for becoming effective managers. For the 3rd year in succession, Cognizant Business Consulting was the Sponsor as well as the Case Study Partner for the event. This year, the Case study was focused on the Finance Domain. Titled ‘NSB Bank - India entry strategy for Wealth Management’ it provided young minds a chance to gain a perspective on the increasingly popular Wealth Management industry. Judges Mr. Rahul Handa, Director Consulting, Cognizant Rahul Handa is the Program Management Consulting (PMC) Head (India) at Cognizant Technology Solutions. Rahul has more than 13 years of experience in management consulting & program management and line functions across various industries like retail, healthcare, telecom etc. His specializes in Business and IT Strategy Consulting and Program Management. Prior to Cognizant, he has worked with Ernst and Young, Gartner Inc. and Atlas Development Corporation where he has undertaken diverse roles such as business analyst, project consultant, product manager, engagement lead and senior manager. Prof. Anand K Sharma, Finance, MDI Gurgaon He was the Chair Professor¸ Railway Finance at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (February 2007 to February 2010). He earned his Ph.D. in Finance from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies¸ University of Bombay. Before that he completed his Masters from Delhi School of Economics (academic scholarship recipient) and LL.B from University of Delhi. He has been a trainer for the last thirty years. We had about 300 registrations for the first round. After picking the best ideas from these initial entries, representatives from Cognizant shortlisted the best 6 teams for the final round. These teams had participants from IIM Kozhikode, MDI Gurgaon and IMT Ghaziabad. The judges were very impressed with the quality of the presentations by the students and the in-depth analysis validating hard-core data. The participants were judged on the basis of level of analysis, innovative thinking, originality and the quality of presentation as well as time management. Team ‘Benchwarmers’ from IMT Ghaziabad bagged the first prize. Team ‘The Invincibles’ from MDI Gurgaon and Team ‘The Konsultants’ from IIM Kozhikode came second and third respectively. deliberations. He shares his perspectives with management students of IIM Bangalore through the elective Managing Public Private Partnership.   • 41. Page | 41 VINCENZA – B-PLAN COMPETITION Vincenza is India's first business coaching program, with a business plan competition as a prelude. So far, B-plan competitions do not go beyond the award ceremonies and the immense potential of the entrepreneurs, who could not make it to top 3, goes unharnessed. It aims to provide coaching at various levels, personalized and broad, for every participant in the competition and to promote the spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation among the students of India. Every participant was entitled to descriptive feedback on the missing ingredients in his/her Business Plan. This is really unique as every potential entrepreneur gets some detailed inputs other than just a 'yes' or a 'no' for the next round. The whole essence of holding an Event like Vincenza is to promote entrepreneurship, and we believe in not just mere presentation of the best Business Plans, but to see to it that those worthy of it get implemented, with Vincenza serving the purpose of an ideal platform. Judges Mr. Sanjay Verma, Head IAN Incubator Sanjay Verma is a management postgraduate in Human Resource with more than 20 years of varied experience in Operations and Human Resources. He has served with the Govt of India and the Private Sector with Companies like Larsen & Toubro Ltd. Sanjay is passionate about creativity and entrepreneurship. He joined Indian Angel Network two years back as the Head of Operations and Partnerships. He currently Heads the IAN Incubator. He has been deeply engaged in evaluating Business Plans for incubation and investment and frequently interacts with early stage entrepreneurs on a daily basis.

Currently Matteo serves as CEO of Axind Software Pvt. Ltd., a leading provider of SaaS solution for the fashion and retail industry. Matteo has invested and mentored a number of startups in India, Europe and the US, including Travelkhana, the leading marketplace for quality food for the Indian train traveller. Previously Matteo served as COO of Eko India Financial Services, the most successful branchless banking operation in India, where he was instrumental in growing the company from a prototype in 2007 to more than 2 million customers today, with 20,000 transactions worth $2M per day. Matteo moved to Gurgaon in 2007 from Boston, MA, where he started and grew a project management consulting company now operating in five different countries, and worked for 10 years in software product management at NASDAQ-listed PTC. Matteo started his career as a telemetry engineer in Formula One in Italy. Mr. Apurv Agrawal, Vice-President, 91SpringBoard Apurv is a founding member at 91springboard and leads the business development and community development efforts. He helped 91springboard establish itself as the hub for entrepreneurship activity in North India. He founded ngoFuel.org, a non-profit facilitating technology usage for other non- profit organizations using the crowd sourcing model. He also headed Business Development for a social enterprise, What’s up Bharat. He is also the President for Kairos Society India. The Kairos Society is an international student run organization of entrepreneurs and innovators from the top universities around the world. He was among 2 Indians selected as young leader to the World Foresight Forum, 2011 at The Hague, Netherlands.
  • 43. Page | 43 Synopsis Vincenza started in the month of November, where each of the teams had to submit brief Executive Summaries, articulating their Plans. Unlike other B-Plan contests, Vincenza does not limit itself only to management colleges. This year there was enthusiastic participation from engineering colleges and existing start-ups as well. About 100 teams registered for the first round. Post the first round, 18 teams were selected for the next phase, where they were provided mentoring to further refine their plans, and address issues under the guidance of the Plans, where 91springboard and IAN played a critical role. A variety of plans from domains as diverse as hospitality to as upcoming as e-commerce, were presented. The judges felt the quality of the B-plans presented was very high when compared to the other B-plans which they had judged. They more refined probably because of the mentoring which was provided earlier as a part of the event. Team “Rob – A – Shop” from ISB Hyderabad and Team “ShanSa” from VPCOE, Pune bagged the first two positions respectively.
