Lakmé is an opera set in 19th century India during British colonization. It tells the story of Lakmé, the daughter of a Brahman priest, who falls in love with an British army officer after he unintentionally enters her temple. When her father discovers their relationship, he attacks the officer in retaliation. Lakmé saves the officer's life but their love is impossible due to their different backgrounds. The opera ends tragically when Lakmé commits suicide upon realizing this.
