2. Australia is located in the southern hemisphere, in Oceania. Is the sixth largest country in the world with a surface area of 7.686.850 km². Its capital, Canberra, is located in the Australian capital territory. Its population is about 20.6 million people, mainly concentrated in the largest coastal cities: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra, Perth y Adelaide.
3. The climate of Australia varies depending on the area. Australia is the driest inhabited and flat, and that less fertile soils possesses. A huge part of the country is desert or semi-arid. *Only in the south-east and southwest there is a temperate climate and in the north part of the country there is a tropical climate. The climate is very influenced by low pressure systems that produce seasonal tropical cyclones in the north, and by the marine currents, including the phenomenon ocean-atmosphere of El Niño, which are associated with recurrent droughts.
4. During the winter, the summer and the autumn, the temperature is similar in the three cities. In winter, the average temperature in the three cities is about 80 °F, in the summer around 50 °F and in the autumn about 70 and 80 °F.
5. The Australian flora includes about 22,000 species. More than 90% are indigenous, and many of them endemic, that means, are not found in other place than in this. Most of the woody plants are evengreen plants and are adapted to the fire and the drought, including many of the species of eucalyptus and acacia.
6. The Australian fauna is very diverse. It is known by the presence of eye-catching marsupials and monotremas. It is characterized by the abundance of extraordinary venomous animals, much of them lethal to human beings, suchas the sea wasporirukandji, alsopoisonousoctopus as theHapalochlaenalunulatav, venomousfish, marine snakes, etc.
