SERVICE SECTORS IN THE COMMUNITY
THE PUBLIC
SECTOR
“Communal good of society-enhancing the quality of life and
well-being of citizens”(Lunn,2021).
There are many examples of the public sector within various
communities, all of which provide opportunities for everyone,
especially those at a disadvantage (Lunn,2021, p.3).
Some of these examples include parks, open spaces and are
generally not concerned with a profit(Lunn, 2021, p.3).

• Originating Authority – Government
• Clientele – General Public
DUNBAR COMMUNITY CENTRE

• Nature of service – Necessary for society,
indirectly/directly benefits everyone(Lunn,2021,
p.3).
• Service Orientation – Empowers individuals
through fitness, sport and events(Lunn, 2021,
p.3).
• Financial Base – Free
• Originating Authority –City of Vancouver
• Clientele – General Public
SPSC 2210: CONNECTION
• All three examples including: Energize Bootcamp, Stanley Park and the Dunbar
community centre all are physical education, recreation and coaching examples.
• This is because they all contribute to a person’s physical and social-well being
and to overall quality of life(Lunn, 2021, p.5)
• All groups of individuals including: age groups, both genders, special interest
groups and ethnic groups can take part in one way or another(Lunn, 2021, p.5)
• All three serve a total need for the community, and plays a significant role in the
cohesion and quality of communities(Lunn, 2021, p.5).
THE PRIVATE
SECTOR
• Recreation where profit is involved.
• Consists of five categories which are: travel and tourism,
entertainment services, leisure services, hospitality/food
and retail (Lunn, 2021, p.6).
• Local recreation is generally divided into
outdoor/indoor commercial recreation, as well as clubs
(Lunn, 2021, p.6).
FITNESS WORLD

• Service Orientation –Based on demand,

• Clientele – Mostly general public,
anyone who can afford service(Lunn,
2021, p.7).
KRAV MAGA & FITNESS

• Nature of service – Provided for a cost;
profit oriented (Lunn, 2021, p.6).
• Service Orientation –Based on demand,
expected high quality(Lunn, 2021, p.6).
• Financial Base – Revenue from fees

• Clientele – Mostly general public,
anyone who can afford service(Lunn,
2021, p.7).
SUMMER DAY CAMPS
CITY OF VANCOUVER (OFFERED THROUGH MANY COMMUNITY
CENTRES)
• Nature of service – Provided for a cost; profit oriented
(Lunn, 2021, p.6).
• Service Orientation –Based on demand, expected high
quality(Lunn, 2021, p.6).
• Financial Base – Revenue from fees
• Originating Authority – Government
• Clientele – Specific market group, anyone who can afford
service(Lunn, 2021, p.7).
SPSC 2010: CONNECTION
• All three examples including: Fitness World, Impact: Krav Maga and Fitness and the summer day
camps offered by the City of Vancouver are a combination of physical education, recreation and
coaching.
• There are many positives and negatives when a service is offered for a fee.
• The positives are vast, as they help communities grow through employment opportunities,
recreation opportunities, as well as stimulating local economies. (Lunn, 2021, p.7).
• There are some negatives as well, as some of these businesses are short lived, which results in
unemployment (Lunn, 2021, p.8).
• Also can raise property values for the surrounding area, making it harder for people to live
(Lunn, 2021, p.8).
NON-PROFIT SECTOR
Close ties to local communities and is
primarily operated by volunteers
(Lunn, 2021, p.8).
Five key features: organized, private,
non-profit distributing, self-
governing and voluntary (Lunn, 2021,
p.8).
Consist of athletics/sports, business
and professional groups, arts and
community(Lunn, 2021, p.9).
Some examples are sport clubs,
dance clubs, internships and social
clubs(Lunn, 2021, p.9).

• Nature of service – Profit making for sustaining
services, generates profit to cover costs
only(Lunn, 2021, p.8).
• Service Orientation – Fitness, sport and social
program, good for community(Lunn, 2021, p.8-
9).

sponsorships(Lunn, 2021, p.9)
• Originating Authority – Individuals, group, sport
organization(Lunn, 2021, p.9)
• Clientele – Like minded individuals, local
communities(Lunn, 2021, p.9)
SPECIAL OLYMPICS B.C. (SOBC)

individuals, local communities, general

• Clientele – Like minded individuals, local

SPSC 2010:CONNECTION
• All three examples including: the SOBC, SPSC student council and the Dunbar CC
are connected to physical education and recreation.
• The SOBC and Dunbar CC are also connected to coaching as well.
• All three groups organize social and fitness events, while the SOBC and Dunbar
CC engage in hosting free fitness classes run by volunteers who specialize as
coaches.
• Finally, all three groups “invest in the future”(Lunn, 2021) and “establish an
organizational culture”(Lunn, 2021)

SPSC 2010:CONNECTION • All three examples including: the SOBC, SPSC student council and the Dunbar CC are connected to physical education and recreation. • The SOBC and Dunbar CC are also connected to coaching as well. • All three groups organize social and fitness events, while the SOBC and Dunbar CC engage in hosting free fitness classes run by volunteers who specialize as coaches. • Finally, all three groups “invest in the future”(Lunn, 2021) and “establish an organizational culture”(Lunn, 2021)
