Why LinkedIn night? © Sparrey Consulting, 2010 Lately, a number of clients have asked me “what exactly am I supposed to be doing with LinkedIn?  Someone sent me an invitation once and I joined, but how do I make it work for me?”  There are several ways to make LinkedIn a part managing your career, from identifying new opportunities to identifying talented people to join your team. ,[object Object]

  1. Treat LinkedIn connects as real invitations. While you may feel comfortable sending the standard Linked In text to people you know really well (because they’re not going to want you to spend one minute customizing an email to them), etiquette is as important on Linked In as it is anywhere else. You do not need to write a long, personalized message for each contact, but you will want to have some standard wording that you can use that you can adjust slightly for each contact as relevant. This is particularly true when you are connecting with someone who is not a peer in your current work environment, or someone who you do not yet know.LinkedIn works best when you are connected to as many of your personal and professional contacts as possible. Be sure to connect with people you know well, who would ACT on your behalf! The general rule is whether you would be willing to help the person if they asked or if they would be willing to help you. If the answer to those questions is “Yes”, connect with them.
