1. Where’s the Fire?
• Minnesota has 1,809 townships
• 1 false call costs the fire budget $1,000
• If each township has just 1 false call per year, it costs their collective budgets a
minimum of $1,809,000
• Assuming calls about permitted fires make-up even 25% of false calls, there’s a
potential collective savings of $450,000
In a time when shortfalls are eliminating firefighter jobs, and
communities are relying on all-volunteer forces, the potential cost
savings is compelling
2. Primary Problem & Solution
PROBLEM:
1. Fire chiefs and other first responders
do not have ready access to
information about permitted burning
activities in their municipalities
therefore respond to false calls.
2. The burn activation process is
cumbersome to those wishing to utilize
their permits therefore hindering
activation compliance.
SOLUTION:
A free app enabling permittees to activate
permits (each year-long permit must be
activated every 24 hour period one
wishes to burn) that pushes that activation
data to fire chiefs, et al, so that they may
mitigate false calls.
3. Business Model & Approach
• Free app
• App funded by ads
• ads targeted to user type – fire chiefs and permittees
• Anyone can download
• DNR userID/PW required
4. ∗ A single app for permittees and
fire chiefs to use, utilizing
existing DNR credentials
∗ Permittees use the app to
activate
∗ Fire chiefs use the app to see
who has activated

8. Competitive Advantage & Value
• For the consumer, this app makes it easy to comply with burn laws
• For fire chiefs, this app makes it easy to see who, what, and where is
burning
Increased adherence to activation requirements means
cost savings for consumers (avoid fines) and
townships (avoid false calls)
9. Future Needs & Potential
1. DNR API, SDK
2. Ability to write to DNR
3. UserID/PW for fire chiefs/et al (if
not currently provided)
4. App developer
