This was presented by Sheila Webber (Sheffield University Information School) at an internal seminar at the Open University, Milton Keynes, UK, on 29 March 2011. After unpacking the concept of information literacy, I look at contextual aspects of information literacy: the disciplinary perspective, the teaching perspective and the learner perspective. I finish by presenting the picture of the Information Literate University that was developed some years ago by Bill Johnston and me.

This presentation will consider the recent development of library and information science as an academic discipline, and the consequent changes required to library school curricula, in order to prepare professional practitioners for employment in today’s information society. These changes, led primarily by technological developments, include the need for consideration of new forms of documents, new methods of dissemination, new information behaviour patterns and increasing demand for novel information architectures. Alongside changes in technology, we can see the emergence of overlap with companion disciplines such as the digital humanities, and these must be accommodated, alongside more obvious connections, such as those with computer science. In conclusion from all of this, we can see that a course focused solely on traditional workplace skills will be insufficient for today’s portfolio-based workforce. We must have an emphasis on thinking skills, new literacies, and resilience, so that we prepare our graduates for employment beyond their first position.

The American Library Association (ALA) (2016) defines censorship as a “change in the access status of material, based on the content of the work and made by a governing authority or its representatives. Such changes include exclusion, restriction, removal, or age/grade level changes” (para 2). Intellectual Freedom may be defined as: the right of every individual to both seek and receive information from all points of view without restriction. It provides for free access to all expressions of ideas through which any and all sides of a question, cause or movement may be explored (ALA, 2016, para 2).

It is time to dispel the myth that only ‘researchers’ or ‘academics’ in the information profession can and should do research. All information professionals have a place in collecting and examining data to improve their services, resources, and spaces. For example, why not use a short questionnaire to find out what your university’s students think of your library’s new app, and then use the results to refine it? This presentation will discuss ‘research evidence’ in library and information settings and explore how it can be used in practice.

This roundtable focused conversation on how the emerging information literacy framework (ACRL, 2015) impacts libraries in virtual schooling environments. Participants discussed K-12 and higher education students' development of information literacy as a series of threshold concepts and metaliteracies (Mackey & Jacobson, 2011, 2014; Townsend, Brunetti, & Hofer, 2011). Participants also examined what the evolving information literacy framework means for virtual schools, libraries, teachers and librarians. Hodges, A. & Ochoa, M. (2015). Information Literacy, Libraries, and Virtual Schools: New Standards for New Modalities. In D. Slykhuis & G. Marks (Eds.), Proceedings of Society for Information Technology & Teacher Education International Conference 2015 (p. 2168). In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
