2. GENERAL INFORMATION
Where: East Cooper Medical
Center
Person Shadowed: Shirley Nilsen,
and a variety of nurses on the
labor and delivery floor.
3. DESCRIPTION OF THE JOB
Nursing is a complex job, and the
employees always have to be ready
especially on the labor and delivery
floor. Its filled with paperwork
documenting every patients
information.
They are there to supply the needs of
all patients in labor to make their
delivery as easy and painless as
possible.
4. DAY 1
During Day 1 at the hospital I spent most of
my time touring the labor and delivery
floor. I was most interested in the nursery,
and I got the opportunity to see all new
born babies.
I ended the day by sitting in the nursing
office area. I watched and observed all of
the paperwork that was done. There was 7
women in labor that day. I didnt get a chance
to talk to many nurses about their career
because of the number of patients.
5. DAY 2
I was able to stay on the labor
and delivery floor for the
second day. It was not as busy
with patients compared to day
1. They had to cut the number
of nurses because of it. I got to
watch paperwork being done
again, and see many happy
families leaving the hospital
with their newborns.
On each computer the nurses
have heart beats of both the
baby and the mother. They are
able to watch the progress of
the patient at their desk.
6. WHAT I LEARNED...
I learned how complex the profession of Nursing
really is. There is alot of work that they are expected
to do for each patient that they are given in their
assigned section of the floor. They have to understand
what is needed for each individual and different
patient in the hospital.
7. WHAT I LEARNED...
I learned that having a set job is so much
responsibility and hardwork. It is worth the
experience and can benefit you in so many areas in
the long run. It can help you grow as a person, and
lead you into the right direction for you future.
8. A NURSING CAREER
I do want to pursue nursing
as my career in the future. I
find it very interesting, and it
is a job that would fit my
personality best. Going to the
hospital and actually
experiencing the job makes
me want to continue to
follow that dream I have had,
and im ready to do anything
it takes to make it there.
9. EVALUATION OF NURSING
I shadowed all nurses on the labor and delivery floor
of the hospital. They all enjoyed their job and made
the best of it. Each nurse was specialized in their
area. I didnt get the chance to talk to any of them, but
I observed each one and all of the things they had to
do in one day. They never get a break, but always have
a smile on their face.
10. WHAT I TOOK AWAY FROM
THE EXPERIENCE...
I took away from the experience that i know that
nursing is definitley the profession I want to go in to. I
know that labor and delivery is a big interest of mine,
and also the area in nursing I would like to pursue. It
changed my outlook on the job of a nurse, and I now
know how much they have to do each day.
