Open Badges are digital credentials for recognizing learning achievements. Traditional credentials are controlled by institutions and focus on grades and quantitative assessments, lacking access to evidence of learning. The modern workforce values skills over diplomas. Open Badges were introduced in 2011 by Mozilla to provide portable, digital credentials that can recognize a wide range of achievements and make the learning process and progress transparent. By connecting to standards, Open Badges support diverse learning pathways and make skills and competencies more visible online. Individuals can create their own Open Badges through code or badge-making platforms.
