Suppliers: Mole whacking or value add?
Love them or loathe them it is fair to say that contractors, consultants, systems providers, marketing agencies and a plethora of other suppliers are now a fundamental part of the HE careers landscape. In this session we will share the University of Hertfordshire story; from being very opposed to third parties c5 years ago, to now working with dozens. Drawing from this case study, and inputs from one of our sectors most valued suppliers Gradconsult, we will:
Map the different types of suppliers and third parties
Explore the benefits and concerns of working with third parties, identifying where they can add value and what you need to protect
Share lessons learnt across the sector
Help you to take control of your supplier and resourcing strategy
Provide top tips for selecting and managing suppliers
Discuss how to grow your influence internally to ensure employability suppliers are not procured elsewhere without involvement
5 minutes: individually who are we? How did we meet – NETWORKING IS GOOD! What are our current roles
5 minutes: individually who are we? How did we meet – NETWORKING IS GOOD! What are our current roles
Split them into small groups to have this discussion amongst themselves first
Explore the benefits and concerns of working with third parties, identifying where they can add value and what you need to protect
Let’s take you back in time to 2012……..A lot can change in 5 years. Gangnam style dominated the charts back then!
Judith tells her story, starting with how she felt about working with suppliers then!
Ask for anyone else in the audience – any lessons you’ve learnt from working with suppliers or third parties?
Judith share hers and RF to add in anything we’ve learnt or seen on the other side of the fence across the sector!
Suggestions……
One size does not fit all – lazy ‘silver bullet’ overclaims or transfer of a model that works in one place to another
Products or services have been ‘sold’ in either to careers services or faculties
Contracts have not been drawn up or enforced well – indeed some suppliers have taken advantage of some University naivety is some instances
Ask for anyone else in the audience – any top tips!
Judith share hers and RF to add in anything we’ve learnt or seen on the other side of the fence across the sector!
Suggestions….
Run a tender!
Meet the delivery team – not just the sales team
Ask for endorsements (celebrity or otherwise)
Talk through Stephen Coveys sphere of influence
Key = market intelligence, being the voice of knowledge and authority on employability suppliers internally!
