Learning analytics is a 'hot topic' in education with many institutions seeking to make better use of the data available via various systems. One of the key challenges in this process is to understand the business questions that people working in various roles in institutions would like to be able to answer. However, it is also important that these questions are appropriately structured and specific in order to gather the relevant data. This session builds on the workshop run at last year's Blackboard Learning and Teaching conference where participants explored business questions and use cases for learning analytics from a range of perspectives. Delivered at Innovate and Educate: Teaching and Learning Conference by Blackboard. 24 -27 August 2015 in Adelaide, Australia.

UK Centre for Legal Education

This session reports the results of a recent OLT-funded national exploratory study addressing the relevant factors and their impact when implementing learning analytics for student retention purposes. The project utilised a mixed-method research design and yielded a series of outputs, including the development of a non-technical overview of learning analytics, focusing on linking the fields of student retention and learning analytics resulting in an institution level survey focusing on sector readiness and decision making relating to utilising learning analytics for retention purposes. An academic level survey was administered to academic staff exploring their progress, aspirations and support needs relating to learning analytics. Follow-up interviews expanded on their experiences with learning analytics to date. An evidence-based framework was developed, mapping important factors affecting learning analytics decision making and implementation. This was illustrated by a suite of five case studies developed by each of the research partner institutions detailing their experiences with learning analytics and demonstrating why elements in the framework are important. These findings were shared and tested at a National Forum in April 2015. Delivered at Innovate and Educate: Teaching and Learning Conference by Blackboard. 24 -27 August 2015 in Adelaide, Australia.

This panel, originally presented on March 25, 2017 in Baltimore, MD at ACRL shows three institutions leading direct assessment data collection and analysis projects at course, program, and institution level. Also included within the presentation are other sources of IL assessment data (indirect) that may already be collected at your institution. Description from ACRL site: Come join a conversation about how librarians can lead the way in assessing information literacy for their campuses. Three librarians will talk about their varied experiences in using the SAILS instrument, from pre- and post-testing in an IL course, to researching student success, to institutional assessment. Presented by Dan Thompson, Manager of Instructional Design and Educational Technology, Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences Exam statistics are far more than an evaluation of student knowledge and retention. Assessment data provide limitless insights into curricular structure, our performance as instructors, and teaching methods. While there is great utility in reviewing how we can improve our teaching and assessment methods, we are selling ourselves short as professionals if we stop there. The robust statistics that can be extracted from student assessment can also be used for scholarly research projects and to prove our successes in the classroom. This presentation will address the process of utilizing ExamSoft categorization techniques to both harness useful exam statistics and then apply them in data-driven research projects—creating scholarly activities to build a professional portfolio and prepare for promotion and tenure.

A scientist's record of scholarly publications serves as a lasting testament to their interests, commitments and passions. Dr J. Mark Erickson has over 45 scholarly publications demonstrating his longstanding commitment to undergraduate research, his exceptional scholarship, and his interest in the regional geology of both the North Country and North Dakota. Dr. Erickson's commitment to undergraduate research started long before it was fashionable, as seen by his first publications in The Compass, the journal of Sigma Gamma Epsilon. His bibliography includes publications in prestigious journals like Nature and the Journal of Paleontology, illustrating the high quality of his scholarship. Smaller organizations like the New York State Geological Association and the North Dakota Academy of Sciences also benefitted from his contributions. Dr. Erickson often chose to work with current and former students, co-authoring with them on many publications. In addition to Dr. Erickson's bibliography, his other vital contribution to the geological sciences is the group of scholars and students he taught and mentored during his time at St. Lawrence. Many of these students have gone on to have illustrious careers as geoscience scholars, thanks largely to the education they received from Dr. Erickson and St. Lawrence University.

Presented at the SUNY Librarians Association Annual Conference, June 18, 2010 Assessment of student learning is only useful if it informs instructional and program goals. At SUNY Geneseo’s Milne Library, librarians defined clear goals and objectives for a required information literacy session conducted in each first year writing seminar. After the original goals and objectives were defined, students in the first year writing seminar completed a pre and post assessment consisting of multiple choice questions, attitudinal questions, and research questions designed to get students to search for and find various information resources. Based on these results, librarians were able to assess their teaching techniques and the relevance of the defined learning outcomes.

The rapid pace of technological change can leave faculty struggling to understand the role of the library in a digital environment. Librarians can easily loose touch with the ways that faculty are creating and accessing scholarship. This session will be useful for librarians who are new to faculty outreach as well as experienced librarians looking for new tools and strategies to help them communicate with faculty. Join us for a discussion of effective strategies to reach out to and communicate with faculty on campus. We will explore questions like: How can new technological tools assist librarians in sharing information with faculty? How can we use technology to encourage faculty to share information with us? And: How to invite yourself to a department meeting?
