What can the school librarian do to widen the horizons of students in preparation for studying at university?

- Harlington is a large Upper School in Bedfordshire with 1,400 students ages 13 – 18 There are about 13,000 printed resources, 20 online computers, and seating for about 60 – it is a small library for the number of students. It is primarily a study area for the 6 th Form but other classes regularly book the room to use the PC’c for coursework. I provide project boxes for specific subjects as and when necessary.
- There are quite a few students who have never been into the library. They have to learn that Google is not the answer to everything, despite what they think. Year 9 Induction using Wikispaces.com this month has proved successful My year 12 induction covers both printed and online resources where they have to actually find books and journals, note details of titles and article and, using an online tool create a bibliography. They also have to access the library catalogue, the library’s Delicious.com site, Issues Online subscription service as well as Neilstoolbox.com for referencing. I liaise with depts to give individual subject lessons, there are displays and leaflets as well as one to one help. I have to be constantly alert to how they are studying.
- Harlington has one Librarian to 90 teaching staff, this ratio makes it difficult to ensure that ALL staff know what the library offers. HUS is very departmentalised, not all schools are. So when a teacher books his class in the library I always make sure they know what services or available However I work hard to promote the library resources. This year I have been asked to increase the number of lessons I give to E P Q students, these will include using Web 2.0 tools, planning and writing assignments. The change of Head of English has also provided closer involvement in the department If a class is booked in to use the computers I also suggest a skills session as well This persistence has paid off – this year I have had more teachers asking me to deliver research skills talks – especially to Btec students. I am also encouraging the teachers to use Wikispaces for their individual groups
- As my own skills in using web tools develop I eventually hope to have a proper Library web site with links to good, accurate and relevant information The are number of very inspirational school librarians, we are a very generous bunch and share our skills and knowledge A Blog would be good to create a link to students but as I’m practically a solo worker time is a major problem The school could really use a new purpose built library but in the current climate plus we are a PFI building!
