A Scalable Approach to Providing Course-based Access to Library Resources
1. A Scalable Approach to Providing Course-based Access to Library Resources Tito Sierra, Jason Casden, and Kim Duckett NCSU Libraries DLF Fall Forum 2008 November 13, 2008
These pages are usually made at the request of faculty or at the initiative of the librarian who is going to provide library instruction. But such hand-authoring and customization takes a lot of time and energy. They provide a lot of value, but it’s hard to make them scale up to reach more students. Hence only a limited number of pages that can be made or maintained. Since librarians don’t have contact with every course on campus, more courses don’t have course pages than those that do.
An actual “Library Course Tools” page. The “Library Course View” box is the portal web page that a student would be referred to through a learning management system or a search. This is a distilled set of entry-points to library content, designed from a course-centric perspective. This portal is a collection of widgets which access information resources, library services and library tools.
The widgets are basically bits of web content. Some widgets contain static content, while some are dynamic or customizable. These widgets are reusable in other contexts, such as Moodle. In fact, the Library Course Tools system and the Widget system are completely distinct from each other, and we hope to use the Widget System for other kinds of content in the future.
