2. Origin
 Feudalism
was introduced by William the
Conqueror when he invaded. (1066)
 Originallyimplemented in France, it was
easily adopted into medieval England

3. Basic Structure
King
Lord
Knight
(Vassal)
Serf

4. Hierarchy Explained
 King: Complete control, owned all land,
gave to lords who were faithful.
 Lord: Given lands called manors. Loyal to
king.
 Knight(Vassal): Provided military force for
king or lords. Helped those in need.
 Serf: Provided labor on fields for knights or
lords.

5. Manorialism
 System by which the Lord
exploited the serfs who
worked his estate.
 Manorialism represented the
economic portion of
feudalism
 Encompassed the political
relations between the Lord
and his serfs. This allowed the
Lord governmental power.

6. Feudal System
 The Feudal System was sustained by the rights
and privileges given to the Upper Classes and
in most cases enacted by laws.
 Sevneral feudal “rights”:
 Judicial Power to lords
 Knighthood Privileges
 Lords claimed goods of dying without heir
 All treasure found was theirs (including
shipwrecks)
 Shelter for noble visitors
