Sinakop ng mga ROMANO ang
Palestina noong 63 B.C. (The Romans

21. The Romans made Herod
(know as Herod the great)
king of the Jews
Jesus was born during the
reigh of this Herod (4 B.C.
by calculation)
22. Namatay si Herodes at
hinati niya ang kaniyang
kaharian sa kaniyang
tatlong mga anak na

2.Herod Antipas –
Galilee & Paraea

intestinal cancer and dropsy
in 4 BC. His sons lacked
their father’s ability and
ambitions, and were
allocated separate parts of
Palestine:
• Archelaus became ethnarch
of Judea, Samaria, and

28. The Jews objected on
religious ground and rose up
in rebellion.
Judas the Galilean, crucified
about 12,000 rebels
29. = The Jews called them Zealots
= The Romans called them bandits.
= Underground movement; loosely organized;
sometimes break up to factions.
= For 60 yrs. continued to harass the Romans
army with sporadic uprisings.
30. = Essentially religious in inspiration and
purpose.
= Believed Israel was a theocracy, that they
were God’s chosen nation. He was their King
their only Lord and Master. That their land
Lord and resources belong to Him alone.
= To accept Romans an act of unfaithfulness to
God. To pay taxes to Ceasar was to give Ceasar
what belonged to God.
31. B. The Pharishees:
= No quarrels with Zealots on tax issue.
= 6,000 Pharishees refuse to sign,oath
of allegiance to Ceasar.
= Believed God had abandoned them
to the Roman yoke because of Israel’s
unfaithfulness to the law and the
traditions of the Father.
= Paid their taxes to Rome under
protest.
32. The Pharishees
= “The separated ones”. Morality was
legalistic and bourgeois, a matter of
reward and punishment. God love
and rewarded those who kept the
law and hated, and punished those
who did not.
= Believed in an after – life in the
resurrection of the dead and in
future Messiah whom God would
send to liberate from the Romans.
33. C. The Essenes
= Went very further than the Pharisees in their striving for
perfection.
= Separated themselves completely from society and went to
live celibated and ascetic life in camps in the desert.
More concerned about
the ritual purity, afraid
of contamination by
the wicked and
unclean world.
34. = Observed daily and
meticulously the rite
of purification
= Reject everyone who
did not belongs to
their sect.
= Love and respect were
reserved for the
members of their
group.
35. = They were alone the faithful remnant of Israel.
= The Romans; first of the sons of darkness to be
destroyed
= Joined the Zealots in 66 A.D. against the Romans.
= Belief that the end of
the world is near.
They prepare for the
coming of the
Messiah, and the
great war in which
they as sons of light
would destroy the
sons of darkness, the
armies of Satan.
36. D. The Sadducees
= Conservatives, clung to the
most ancient. Hebrew
traditions are rejected all
novelties of belief and ritual.
= The after-life and
resurrection of the dead
were regarded as novelties.
= Reward and punishment
were to be found in this life.
38. The Sadduccees
Members of the wealthy
aristocracy: chief priest and
elder. Chief priests were a
special class of priests.
They not only offered
sacrifices like other priests,
but were also responsible
for the organization and
administration of the
Temple. Priesthood was
heridetary.
The elders were the lay nobility, the old
aristocratic families who owned most of the land.
39. E.
= In the midst of these religio-
political movements , a man
stood out as a sign of
contradiction.
= Different precisely because he
was a prophet. There had
been no prophet in Israel for
a very long time. Spirit of the
prophecy had been
quenched. God was silent.
= Silence was broke by the voice
of John the Baptist in the
wilderness.
40. His style of life,
his way of
speaking and his
message, were a
conscious revival
of the traditions of
the Prophets.
41. = His message: God will
intervene in the history.
“The one who is to come” is
now standing ready with
his axe or his winnowing
fan.
“He will baptize you with
the Holy Spirit and with
fire.”
= Appealed to the sinners,
prostitutes, tax collectors
and soldiers as well as
Scribes and Pharisees.
