ETHICAL THEORIES
UTILITARIANISM -THE MORAL WORTH OF AN ACTION IS DETERMINED SOLELY BY ITS OUTCOME. -”THE GREATEST GOOD FOR THE GREATEST NUMBER OF PEOPLE.”
DEONTOLOGY -DETERMINES GOODNESS/RIGHTNESS FROM EXAMINING ACTS, RATHER THAN 3RD PARTY CONSEQUENCES. -”ONE SHOULD DO UNTO OTHERS AS THEY WOULD HAVE DONE UNTO THEM.” -EVERYONE HAS A DUTY TO DO THE RIGHT THING EVEN IF IT PRODUCES A BAD CONSEQUENCE.
VIRTUE THEORY -EMPHASIZES THE CHARACTER OF THE PERSON AS THE KEY ELEMENT OF ETHICAL THINKING, RATHER THAN RULES OR CONSEQUENCES. -AN ACT OR CHOICE IS MORALLY RIGHT IF, IN CARRYING OUT THE ACT, ONE EXERCISES, EXHIBITS, OR DEVELOPS A MORALLY VIRTUOUS CHARACTER.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO CONSIDER ETHICAL CONCERNS WHEN DEVELOPING A PERSONAL LEISURE PHILOSOPHY & IN SELECTING LEISURE ACTIVITIES? ________________________________________________ CRITERIA FOR DETERMINING ETHICS 1) Likelihood of physical harm to others. 2) Likelihood of emotional harm to others. 3) Likelihood of physical harm to self. 4) Likelihood of emotional harm to self. 5) Likelihood of negative impact on society in general.
WHAT ARE COMMON OBSTACLES TO LEISURE FULFILLMENT? _____________________________________________ 2 CATEGORIES OF OBSTACLES: 1) INTERNAL: Obstacles that can be controlled -Guilt -Lack of free time -Lack of motivation -Inadequate knowledge of leisure resources 2) EXTERNAL: Circumstances beyond our control -Weather -Work commitments -Family obligations

3) LACK OF MOTIVATION -What are reasons for a lack of motivation to participate in recreational activity? -How can we instill motivation? 4) POOR KNOWLEDGE OF LEISURE RESOURCES -How can we gain more knowledge of leisure resources? 5) LACKING A PARTNER -How can you meet people so that you can participate in activities that require a partner(s)? -Recreational activities with significant other?
6) OUTSIDE INFLUENCES -How can outside influences negatively impact an individual’s leisure behavior? -How can we prevent outside influences from impacting our leisure behavior? 7) HABITS/SET PATTERNS -What is a “leisure rut?” Why do we fall into them? -What are some desirable leisure activities that you would love to do but have not been able to engage in lately? -How can you devote more time to your higher rated leisure activities?
