After watching fifteen of the graduates receive honors at the Grade School in Patanatic last fall, it was
clear that the parents of the tiny village had cultivated an extraordinary crop of scholars. All of them
qualified to sit for the examination at the Universidad del Valle de Guatemala’s Secondary School
program. If they passed, they will gain admission this January 2014.
Rosa Garcia­Garcia had nine of the students with her at the market last Saturday morning. They were
already to go up to UVG’s Solola campus to take the test. The kids were nervous in spurts, they goofed
around and sometimes even sat quietly waiting to register. (While all mothers fear the idea of their
children traveling twice a day on dangerous roads, a few discouraged their own kids from taking the
test.)
This proposal is for donors to completely support Secondary and Special Education for sixteen children
– fourteen are the excellent scholars and the two others require care through 2018.
Starting with $18,000 by 31DEC2013.
.The entire plan covers five years at current prices ending in 2018 and assumes that that all children who
are eligible will gain admission to UVG; that Felix Marcario and Sandy Garcia D. (who are two grades
behind) should, also, qualify for the UVG program; and that, three who are starting in January will
continue on to complete the (2) year Baccalaureate program. Ten Percent will be given to Rosa Garcia
Garcia as an administrative fee.
At present, the fourteen scholars are attending two local Secondary Schools and one of the special
children is beeing seen at Fundabiem, Panajachel. The Budgets below detail costs of three school’s
costs (two levels at UVG) and approximate prices for weekly Physical Therapy sessions for the two
special children based on Luisita’s costs. The annual expenses for tuition, transport, uniforms, etc. will
peak in 2015 at about USD$22,000 and decline after that. It is possible that a percentage of the UVG
costs may be granted from the University but what is most important is that there will be no burden for
the parents. In the case of overage: for example should some students not participate or otherwise fail
to complete this program, those unused funds shall be retained to cover shortfall and the remainder, if
any, shall be divided this way: one share for each ACTIVE scholar and one share for Rosa.
