HOW MEDICAL STUDENTS LEARN IN FUTURE?
Dr.T.V.Rao MD
Medical education is in an era of transformation, and medical Colleges are beginning to innovate to
prepare new physicians for the emerging new model of care.
India in for change with the new curricular changes with effective from 2019 as the regulator ( MCI )
realized what all taught in the past is nonproductive to make skilled doctors to make effective decisions
in time of managing simple cases and emergencies, The truth for many courses is that you are only really
studying in order to pass your exams and once you have managed this the information which you have
tried so hard to learn is largely useless to you. This is very much not the case in medicine, with areas of
study including anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, Microbiology and pathology all being
directly applicable in diagnosing, understanding and treating a disease, 2nd year in Medical colleges is
crucial for learning to be a competent doctors if you pass all your exams while studying medicine you
will go on to become a doctor. However, even one is authorized to practice but lacks many skills in real
time actions which bring in difficulties in a time of crisis.
STUDENTS SKIP DIDACTIC LECTURE OR DO NOT PAY ANY ATTENTION It just not a phenomenon in India
but in many developed countries the great reasons being students highlight increasing dissatisfaction
and anxiety that there’s a mismatch between what they’re taught in class during those years and what
they’re expected to know — or how they’re tested — my own thinking it is true with many medical
colleges we are associated, as many colleges run with outdated senior teachers, and least interested
juniors too play the game of their own or imitate the unproductive teachers ( many peer view at >40 %
of the retired and seniors )only suitable to be legal instrument to run medical colleges,
Why students confused with Microbiology - taking microbiology in their second year of medical colleges
“We were just bombarded with different names of bacteria, viruses, and fungi, and we were having a
tough time keeping them all straight,”
DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION CHANGING THE PROCESS OF LEARNING - According to 2017 data from the
Association for American Medical Colleges, 1 in 4 preclinical students watches educational videos — like
those on YouTube — on a daily basis. And according to two video developers, tens of thousands of
medical students subscribe to their products — one of which costs $250 for two years, the other $370
for one year.
REPLACING OUTDATED TEACHERS? Leaders in medical education have begun to scramble. Some medical
schools, like Harvard, have done away with lectures for the most part. Instead of spending hours in an
auditorium, Harvard students learn the course content at home and then apply the knowledge in
mandatory small group sessions, in the new syllabus many times should have to learn through their own
needs learn at home and to be presenting the matters in microteaching
Medical students want to focus learning on preparing for future will adapt their curriculum so that
medical students will be able to identify and address current system failures and contribute to a culture
emphasizing safety and improvement. In addition, students will function as active members of
interprofessional teams. They will also pose clinical questions and advance patient care by retrieving
high-quality evidence and it makes the majority of the textbooks mushrooming the market in preclinical
and paraclinical will be diverted through digital learning modes which many developed countries offer to
the third world countries,
NEED OF THE TIMES WITH CURRICULAR CHANGES - By teaching medical students more about the
healthcare system, further integrating technology into the practice of medicine, and helping physicians
learn the leadership and communication skills required to effectively connect with patients and team
members, medical schools can improve quality of care while also improving the experience of receiving
care.
